The kingpin of an inter-state antique smuggling gang that recently stole an 11th century idol from a temple in Balasore district of Odisha was arrested in Uttar Pradesh today. The 2.5 feet-long granite idol of 'Bajra Vairahi', weighing 70 kg, went missing from the temple in Nilagiri police station area of the district in December, SDPO Sudam Charan Sahu said. A joint team of Odisha and Uttar Pradesh police officers nabbed Suresh Yadav (50) from Dwarikapuri area in Bijnor district of the northern state. "During our investigation, we found out that Yadav is the mastermind of the gang. His number was traced to Uttar Pradesh. With help from the UP officers, we arrested him," Sahu said. The idol, however, has not been recovered as yet, he rued. "Yadav has confessed to have stolen the idol along with another gang member, who is still at large," he said, adding that police are on the lookout for his accomplices.
A 30-year-old medical representative was shot dead by two unidentified persons today in the Kagzi- Mohal locality in the Bajaria area here, police said. Zaheer Abbas alias Shawez, resident of Chote Miyan Hata, Colonelganj, died on the spot. Eyewitnesses claimed to have seen two armed men fleeing from the scene after a couple of gunshots, police said. Senior Superintendent of Police, Akhilesh Kumar Meena, said that Abbas hailed from Azamgarh had just left his aunt's house around midnight for Bansamandi to attend a wedding ceremony when the incident took place. He was discovered lying in pool of blood near a drain before a mosque in Kagzi-Mohal by the locals who informed police, SSP said. Police is suspecting a property dispute as the motive behind the murder. A probe is on in the matter, the official said. The Supreme Court today dubbed as "serious" the issues raised in the pleas relating to the death of special CBI judge B H Loya, but castigated a senior lawyer for raking up the name of BJP president Amit Shah in the case. The apex court, which decided to look into "all documents with utmost seriousness" connected with the death of Loya, who was trying the Soharabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, also took umbrage at senior advocate Indira Jaising, who during the hearing, inferred a possible future order that the apex court may gag the media in the case. The Delhi Police today filed a charge sheet against suspected al-Qaeda terrorist Zeeshan Ali, deported from Saudi Arabia in August last year, in a case of making provocative speeches to recruit Indian youths and establishing a base for the terror outfit. Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma posted the matter for February 2 when it will decide on the point of taking cognisance of the document filed by the police. Ali's name, along with that of 11 others, was disclosed by Syed Anzar Shah and four others -- Mohd Asif, Zafar Masood, Mohd Abdul Rehman and Abdul Sami -- arrested in the case earlier. The Delhi Police's Special Cell had arrested Ali after searching for him over a year after three alleged AQIS (Al- Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent) operatives were arrested in 2015.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday will hear a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh case.The PIL filed by the Bombay Lawyers Association seeks direction for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to challenge the discharge of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president and Rajya Sabha member Amit Shah in the alleged Sohrabuddin Shaikh fake encounter case.The petition has also challenged the transfer order of CBI Judge JT Utpat, who was presiding over the Sohrabuddin trial. Three persons of a family, including two women, were today killed and two others injured after the car they were travelling in plunged into a gorge in Rajasthan's Bundi district after the driver lost control. The incident occurred around 1 am at the Kota-Udaipur national highway when the family was returning to Kota after distributing wedding cards to relatives in Bhilwara. They said the woman hailing from Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, was found carrying the rounds yesterday evening by CISF personnel at the Adarsh Nagar station when her bag was being scanned.
