The Gujarat government today told the Supreme Court that the victim in a rape case involving self-styled preacher Asaram Bapu will be examined from January 29. The top court adjourned the hearing on the bail plea of Asaram by nine weeks and said it will taken it up after the victim is examined by the trial court. A bench of Justices N V Ramana and A M Sapre which was initially inclined to dismiss the bail petition said the petitioner can easily approach after the victim is examined. The court had on January 15 sought to know the status of trial in a rape case involving Asaram and asked the Gujarat government to file a progress report on it. Asaram's counsel had then told the court that in the Gujarat case, out of 92 witnesses, 22 material witnesses have been examined, 14 of them are dropped and rest need to be examine. Police have registered an offence against a contractor and three others for alleged misuse of a public toilet meant for physically challenged persons at the Thane railway station. According to a complaint filed by an official of the NGO, Prahar Apang Railway Pravasi Sanghatana, the contractor was allowing everyone to use the toilet, a police official said. The facility was being misused, thus causing problems for the physically challenged people who were finding it difficult to use the toilet meant for them, said the complaint. Based on the complaint, the Kopri police registered an offence on Saturday under relevant sections of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act against the contractor and the three other persons employed at the station for operating the toilet, the official added.

A week after a woman was attacked with acid in Kalampur in Kalahandi district, police managed to nab the accused from Andhra Pradesh.The police arrested Parshuram from Rangareddy district in Andhra Pradesh. A 27-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the ninth floor of a mall in west Delhi's Janakpuri today, the police said. Mohan Chaudhary, a resident of Uttam Nagar, jumped off the ninth floor corridor of the Mall in District Centre, Janakpuri, they said. He was rushed to a hospital where he was declared brought dead, the police said, adding the reason for him taking the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.
The Delhi Police has arrested a 49-year-old man who was running the firecracker plant in Bawana, where 17 people died in a massive blaze yesterday. Manoj Jain, who ran the factory, was arrested. A probe revealed it was a factory of "cold firecrackers" used in stage shows and Holi celebrations, said Rajneesh Gupta, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini). Firecracker packages found at the site suggest the same, he said. Jain had rented the factory from January 1, the DCP said. Police said Jain was out of Delhi and was apprehended yesterday while returning from the airport. During interrogation, he revealed that he was paying Rs 25,000 as rent for the premises. A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his friend on the suspicion of the latter having an affair with his wife, the police said today. They said 27-year-old Pawan Shukla was arrested on January 19 from a de-addiction centre at Tughlakabad Extension, where he was hiding. Investigation into the case had started after the police found an unidentified man's body, with the head crushed with stone, at a vacant plot near Badarpur flyover on Mathura Road here. The police said, during probe, they came across a torn visiting card, at the site of crime, which after being assembled together revealed a phone number. On tracing the number, which belonged to Shukla's wife, she identified the victim as her husband's friend Devender, they said. The deceased's father, said his son was last seen with Shukla, the police said, adding following a tip-off, the accused was arrested from the de-addiction centre. Pune police today arrested one person in connection with the murder of a 56-year-old real estate businessman here. Realtor Deven Shah was shot dead by two people outside his residence on the night of January 13. CCTV images from the area showed that two persons had fired five rounds, two of which hit Shah, in the plush Prabhat Road area of Deccan Gymkhana. Police identified the arrested accused as Ravi Chorage with Additional Commissioner of Police (North/South Region), Ravindra Sengaonkar, stating that Chorage's interrogation was underway. The mortal remains of BSF jawan Lance Naik Sam Abraham, who was killed in Jammu Kashmir in cross border firing, was brought here tonight. A 26-year-old woman was today trampled to death by a wild elephant at Kotri range under Lansdowne forest division in Uttarakhand's Pauri district, a forest official said. According to the official, the incident took place in the noon, when the woman, identified as Anjali, was on way to Kadarganj village in Bijnor district. She was with other women when the elephant attacked them. The other women fled the spot to save their lives. However, Anjali fell victim to the elephant. When they returned there after sometime, they found her in an unconscious state. The women, with the help of locals, rushed her to a government hospital where she was declared dead.
Three people were today arrested on the charge of illegally mining sand in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Budh Nagar district, the police said. The accused -- Ashok, Arvind and Sushil -- allegedly mined sand illegally at Dadupur Khatana area along the Ganga canal and loaded it on tractor trolleys and bullock carts, they said.
