The probe into the Bawana fire incident that claimed 17 lives was handed over to the Crime Branch from the district police today. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch by Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik since it "requires extensive investigation and a proper detailed follow-up", a Delhi Police statement said. Ten women and seven men were killed while a man and woman were injured in the massive blaze at a "cold firecrackers" unit in outer Delhi's Bawana industrial area yesterday. Three people, including a sub- inspector of the Haryana Police, were arrested for allegedly possessing one kg of Methamphetamine, popularly known as 'ice'. They were nabbed by the Punjab Police's Special Task Force (STF) on drugs, on the Patiala-Dakala road yesterday, SP of Mohali STF Rajinder Singh Sohal today said. Acting on a tip-off, a car with Haryana registration number was intercepted and during checking, Methamphetamine was found in it, the police said. A 63-year-old widow was allegedly raped by a neighbour in Chhattisgarhs Raigarh district, police said today. The incident occurred on Thursday night in Kevda Badi area under City Kotwali police station limits and the accused, identified as private security guard Sanjay Thakur (25), has been arrested, a local police official said. As per preliminary investigation, the accused barged into the victims house when she was sleeping and sexually assaulted her, he said. On hearing the woman's screams, the accused's wife rushed there and thrashed her husband and dragged him home, he added. A Pakistani man, who stole candies and sweets from passengers' luggage while working as a porter at an airport in the UAE, has been jailed for three months and ordered to be deported, a media report has said. The defendant opened an unidentified number of bags and stole different kinds of sweets and candies, Gulf News quoted court records as saying. An airport policeman said the porter was spotted opening bags and was apprehended for questioning. "When asked if he had opened passengers' bags, he confessed that he opened a number of bags and took candy or sweets and ate them instantly. A 27-year-old Indian worker was crushed to death after a diesel container fell on him while unloading goods from a small ship near Khalid Port in Sharjah in the UAE, a media report said today. A man and his mother were killed today when their bike collided head-on with a truck in Bihar's Nalanda district. The deceased have been identified as Sonu Kumar (21) and his mother Rima Devi (43), residents of Mai village in Parwalpur police station area of the district, police said. The incident occurred near Makanpur village in Noor Sarai police station area of the district this morning when a speeding truck knocked down Kumar and his mother, who were on their way to Biharsharif, the district headquarters town of Nalanda. Both of them died on the spot, the officer-in-charge of Noor Sarai police station, Rajan Malviya, said, adding the truck driver fled the scene. Following the incident, the local people blocked the Biharsharif-Ekangarsarai main road for hours, demanding immediate arrest of the accused.
