The Bombay High Court on Friday rejected the Maharashtra governor's sanction to prosecute senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in Adarsh Scam.Chavan, in December 2016, had moved the Bombay High Court challenging Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao's decision granting sanction to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute him in the Adarsh housing society scam.Earlier, Rao had given sanction to prosecute Chavan on the charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy under IPC Sections 120 (b)(criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating and under various provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act in the case.The CBI has accused the former chief minister of approving additional floor space index for Adarsh society in return for two flats for his relatives.
A fast track court here has sentenced a woman to seven years imprisonment for helping a man and his wife in the rape of her friend 14 years ago. Judge Ashok Kumar yesterday held that Rita Kumari helped Ugar Sain and his wife in the rape of a 22-year-old girl at Titawi village in the district on June 3, 2003. Ugar Sain and his wife were convicted in 2006, the government lawyer said. Rita Kumari, a friend of the survivor, was found guilty under IPC section 210 B (criminal conspiracy). The court also imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on her.
The Delhi High Court today granted two-week parole to INLD chief O P Chautala, serving a ten-year jail term in a teachers recruitment scam case, to look after his ailing wife. Justice Mukta Gupta, however, restrained the former Haryana chief minister from involving in any other activity and also stopped him from moving out of Sirsa where his wife is admitted in a hospital. While granting the relief, the court asked him to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 and two sureties of the like amount. "He should confine himself to the hospital at Sirsa where his wife is admitted and is in ICU, unless she is shifted to other hospital out of that place," the court said. It further said that Chautala should ensure that he will not indulge himself in any activity except the reason for which he has been granted two weeks parole. In the petition filed through advocate Amit Sahni, the 82-year-old leader had said that his wife Sneh Lata was critically ill and was hospitalised at Sirsa .

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today said it has arrested two persons in connection with its money laundering probe in the Bikaner land scam case. The agency identified the arrested duo as Jaiprakash Bagarwa and Ashok Kumar. "Ashok Kumar is a close associate of Mahesh Nagar of Ms Skylight Hospitality Private Limited," it said. They have been arrested under the PMLA law, it said. Skylight hospitality is a firm that has been alleged to be linked to Robert Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress President Rahul Gandhi. The agency had searched the premises of Kumar and Nagar in April this year. It had said that in four cases of land purchase in Bikaner by this firm that is alleged to be linked to Vadra, the "authorised representative" was Nagar. Kumar, it has been alleged by the agency, purchased land in the same area using the "power of attorney" of others. It is also alleged that Kumar is a "close associate" of Nagar. Three persons died of asphyxiation while cleaning a tank containing chemicals and gold dusts at a goldsmith's workshop here early today, police said. The owner of the workshop Ravishankar had asked Ezhumalai and Gourishankar to clean the tank. As soon as the two entered the tank, they shouted for help as they were unable to breathe due to the foul smell emanating from it. Suryakumar, a supervisor, rushed to the spot to rescue them. However, he fell unconscious due to the foul odour. Both the workers died on the spot due to asphyxiation while Suryakumar, who was rushed to the government hospital, also died without responding to the treatment, police said. they said. A 25-year-old woman, who was allegedly set ablaze last evening in full public view in Secunderabad by a man suspected to be her lover, succumbed to her burns this morning, police said. She died around 7.30 am while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (north zone) B Sumathi said. The woman worked as a receptionist at an aluminium fabrication unit, police said. As per preliminary investigation, the man, aged around 28, last evening called her to Lalaguda area, located about 10 kms from here. After she reached the spot, the man suddenly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire before fleeing, a police official yesterday said. Hearing her cries, some passersby rushed to her aid and put out the fire. The woman, who suffered 60 per cent burns, was then shifted to the hospital. "She passed away this morning. A police complaint has been filed against three doctors of a leading hospital in Mathura district after a woman, who was operated on there for a heart condition, died. Anil Singh, the son of the woman, has alleged in the complaint that negligence by the doctors of Nayati Hospital resulted in the death of his mother. Anil is the nephew of the BJP MLA from Govardhan town in the district. Omvati Devi (55) succumbed at the hospital on December 15 a few hours after she was operated on for a heart condition and a stent was placed, according to the police complaint. The hospital's spokesman has denied the allegations. The spokesman said the woman was brought to the hospital on December 15 after she suffered a cardiac arrest. She had a heart condition and had been advised to undergo angioplasty, but the family members delayed her treatment because of a marriage in the family.
