Barala's bail plea deferred till Jan 11

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today deferred to January 11 its hearing on the bail plea of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala's son Vikas Barala, who had been booked for stalking and attempting to abduct a woman. The single bench of Justice Lisa Gill also directed the cellular operator to provide to the trial court, on January 4, the call details between the complainant, 29-year-old Varnika Kundu and her IAS father VS Kundu, as sought by Barala's counsel. The high court also directed the trial court to complete the cross-examination of Varnika Kundu before January 11 when the bail plea will be considered, said Barala's counsel Vinod Ghai. Barala's counsel had sought a regular bail from the court, submitting his client has been behind the bars for nearly four months and should be granted bail. 2 cops arrested on bribery charges

The anti-corruption vigilance officials today arrested an Inspector-In-Charge (IIC) and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of police in Mayurbhanj district on charges of accepting bribe. The two police officers were identified as Kaptipada police IIC Brajabandhu Nayak and ASI Rabi Narayan Suar. The two were arrested by the Vigilance sleuths of Baripada division while taking bribe of Rs 20,000 from one Tapan Barik of Kaptipada village. Sources said, the police officers demanded Rs 40,000 from Barik for releasing his bike which was in police custody following a group clash at Kaptipada on September 29. Vigilance DSP Santosh Kumar Samantray and other staff participated in the raid on the two police officers.

Police "rules out rape" of blind girl attacked by miscreants

Police today "ruled out rape" of the blind girl who was attacked by unidentified persons in Odisha's Ganjam district. There was an attempt to murder the 16-year-old visually challenged girl by slitting her throat at Puhundi village under Jarada police station limit yesterday. The doctors who examined the victim at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here categorically said there was "no signs of rape", said additional superintendent of police (Berhampur) Trinath Patel. He along with some senior police officers was in the village for the second day today for investigation of the incident. "We are still clueless about the miscreants" he said. Satisfied with the verdict: Suhaib Ilyasi's mother-in-law

Anju Singh's mother today expressed satisfaction over the life term awarded to Suhaib Ilyasi for killing her daughter after a 17-year-long battle. The former TV anchor and producer was awarded the sentence by a Delhi court which said that he "committed murder and gave it a colour of suicide". Rukma Singh, who arrived from Patna to attend today's proceedings, said, "I'm satisfied with the verdict. As long as he is convicted I'm fine." She told the reporters that she had spoken to her granddaughter, who was three-year-old at the time of the incident, and had seen her. "She resembles Anju a lot," she said. Her lawyer Satender Sharma said that Rukma had met her granddaughter, currently in Ilyasi's custody, in 2008 on her birthday, adding that she had visiting rights and used to meet her on special occasions like birthdays. Six arrested in Hyderabad for trying to buy newborn

Police today arrested six persons, two of them women, for allegedly trying to buy a six- day-old baby girl from a poor couple. Based on a specific information, police laid a trap and nabbed a group of persons near a temple at Saroor Nagar, where they had come to complete the deal, an official said. The newborn was rescued and will be handed over to the local Child Welfare Committee, Rachakonda Police Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said. "The gang, led by one Kedavath Ravi, contacted a tribal couple in a village in Mahbubnagar district and offered to buy their newborn child," Bhagwat said. The couple is poor and already has two daughters, said Bhagwat. According to police, the gang members planned to buy the newborn for Rs 15,000 and sell her to a prospective customer for Rs 80,000. The accused were booked for trafficking of a minor under relevant sections of the IPC besides provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, police said, adding further probe was on.

CBI arrests railway official for demanding bribe

A Western Railway (WR) official was today arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 10000 from a contractor involved in railway works. A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official from the agency's Bhopal office said that senior section engineer PD Pushkar was arrested after a trap was laid based on the contractor's complaint. He was arrested from Shujalpur in the state's Shahjapur district, the official added. He said that the WR official was demanding a cut from the contractor for work the latter had done earlier with the railways. The arrested official had also threatened the complainant with further harassment if he was not paid, said the official. The CBI official said that incriminating documents had been recovered during raids conducted at places connected with the accused in Shujalpur and Ujjain district. He added that a case had been registered under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The arrested official was produced before the magistrate who sent him .

Nabha jailbreak: One of masterminds arrested from Delhi

The Patiala Police today claimed to have nabbed one of the gangsters who played a key role in the sensational Nabha jailbreak from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, police said. Inderjit Singh was travelling from Jordan to New Delhi with a fake passport, they said. A Look Out Circular (LOC) notice was already issued by the Patiala Police against the accused, the police said. Bodies of Dalit woman, nephew found in UP

The hacked bodies of a Dalit woman and her 5-year-old nephew were found today in a village here leading to a protest by locals who initially refused to hand the bodies over to the police, an official said. Prachi (22), a college student, and Sandeep (5), residents of Luhari Khurd village, were missing since last evening, Superintendent of Police (City) Ombir Singh said, adding that they were hacked to death by unidentified people. Villagers staged a protest after the bodies were found in a sugarcane field and refused to hand them over to the police for almost four hours, he added. The police formed three special teams to trace the killers and launched an investigation, following which the protesters agreed the let go of the bodies, the SP said. A case was registered and the bodies were sent for postmortem, Singh added. Extra personnel have been deployed in the village to tighten security, he said.

As many as 75 IPS officers currently face disciplinary proceedings and 47 IPS officers face criminal investigations, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said FIRs have been registered against 47 IPS officers and chargesheets or challans have been filed in 20 cases. "As per the information available, 75 IPS officers are currently facing disciplinary proceedings and 47 IPS officers are facing criminal investigation or proceedings," he said, replying to a written question. Rijiju said five IPS officers have been retired in public interest by the government by invoking various provisions of the All India Services (Death-Cum- Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958, since 2014.

Three held for smuggling gold worth Rs 49 lakh at IGI Airport

Three people have been arrested by customs officials for their alleged involvement in smuggling into the country gold worth over Rs 49 lakh at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), an official release said today. The trio, including a computer operator of a private firm engaged in providing certain services at the airport, have been allowed in another case of smuggling of gold. In the latest incident, a passenger was intercepted by the customs after his arrival from Riyadh on Monday. A detailed personal search of the passenger resulted in the seizure of about 1.8 kg gold, valued at Rs 49.42 lakh, according to a press release issued by the customs. During investigation, it was found that he was part of a three-member syndicate involved in smuggling, it said. The Supreme Court has found 'no merit' in a plea seeking prohibition of liquor across the country claiming that it caused death, health problems, rise in crime graph and financial loss to the people. The top court rejected the plea and also imposed Rs 1 lakh as costs on the petitioner NGO Chaitanya Sravanthi, a Vishakhapatnam-based organisation . A Delhi court today sentenced former TV anchor and producer Suhaib Ilyasi to life imprisonment for killing his wife Anju more than 17 years ago, saying he "committed murder and gave it a colour of suicide". The court ruled out that the case was in the realm of the rarest of the rare category warranting death penalty to the host of famous show 'India's Most Wanted' and said ends of justice would be met if the convict is sentenced to life term. Man sentenced to 3 years' jail for firing at police team

The district court here today sentenced a man to three years' imprisonment under section 307 of the IPC for firing at a police team in 2013. The accused, Pappu, alias Ashok, was arrested after he fired at a team of police personnel on October 26, 2013, near Kot canal ridge in Dadri town. He had initially claimed to have been falsely implicated but confessed to the crime in the court later. He had surrendered before the court on March 14, 2014, and had since then been in jail. "Pappu, alias Ashok, was awarded imprisonment of three years and fine of Rs 1000 under IPC section 307 for firing at a police team by the additional session judge," Senior Prosecution Officer Lalit Mudgal said. In two separate cases, the court today awarded prison sentences to two individuals under the Arms Act, Mudgal added.
