HC asks AIIMS to examine pregnant girl seeking abortion

The Delhi High Court today directed the AIIMS to constitute a medical board and examine a 15-year-old pregnant girl seeking termination of her foetus. Justices S Muralidhar and I S Mehta said that a report of the medical board be submitted to it on December 22 to know whether medical termination of the foetus was advisable as the pregnancy was of over 25 weeks. Section 3(2)(b) of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act prohibits abortion of a foetus after 20 weeks of pregnancy. In pursuance to the court's direction yesterday, the girl today filed an affidavit stating that she wanted to get her pregnancy terminated. Advocate Kamlesh Kumar Mishra, appearing for the girl, claimed that the minor had changed her mind earlier under police influence and now she was for a medical termination of the foetus as she wanted to pursue her studies. Suhaib Ilyasi sentenced to life imprisonment

Suhaib Ilyasi, who shot to fame with the TV show 'India's Most Wanted' in late 90s, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi sessions court for killing his wife in 2000.Ilyasi was convicted by the court on December 16, while an order was passed by additional sessions judge, SK Malhotra, who found Ilyasi guilty under the Indian Penal Code.Ilyasi's wife Anju was murdered in 2000 in Delhi after which the police arrested him on the basis of inquest report by the area magistrate.He was booked for dowry death and destroying evidence. But in 2014 the Delhi High Court ordered that he be tried for murder even as he was out on a bail.Anju's family wanted capital punishment to Ilyasi but his lawyer requested for minimum punishment, stating that his client was distressed and shall not be liable for the extreme sentence.

Three arrested for illegal sand mining in UP

Police today arrested three people and seized three trucks loaded allegedly with illegally mined sand from their possession here. Ex-TV producer Suhaib Ilyasi gets life term for killing wife

A Delhi court today awarded life imprisonment to former television serial producer Suhaib Ilyasi for killing his wife Anju 17 years ago. The court ruled out the demand for death sentence saying the case did not fall in the rarest of the rare category. Additional Sessions Judge S K Malhotra imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh on Ilyasi, who was convicted on December 16 for stabbing to death his wife. The court also directed that Rs 10 lakh would be paid as compensation to parents of Anju which would be borne by Ilyasi. Ilyasi, who was brought from Tihar jail, shouted that he was innocent and the award of life sentence is an "injustice". During the arguments on sentence, the prosecution sought capital punishment for the former TV producer contending that he gave "a painful death to his wife". Justice U D Salvi takes charge as acting Chairperson of NGT

Justice Umesh Dattatraya Salvi took charge as the acting Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) today, following the retirement of Justice Swatanter Kumar. Justice Salvi will continue in office until the date a new chairperson is appointed or the date of his superannuation, whichever is earlier, according to a government notification. He will retire on February 13, 2018. The Ministry of Environment and Forests notification states, "...the central government hereby authorises Justice Umesh Dattatraya Salvi, Judicial Member, NGT to act as Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal, as the vacancy in the office of Chairperson has arisen due to superannuation of Justice Swatanter Kumar, with effect from December 20, 2017 until the date on which a new Chairperson is appointed or till the date of his superannuation, whichever is earlier." HC dismisses Tejpal's plea seeking quashing of rape, other

The Bombay High Court today dismissed a petition filed by Tehelka's former editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal seeking quashing of rape and other charges levelled against him by a former woman colleague. Justice Nutan Sardesai of the Goa bench of the high court dismissed the petition by Tejpal, who has been accused of raping the woman during an event in Goa in 2013. The detailed order is expected to be pronounced later in the day. The district court in Mapusa town had earlier framed charges against Tejpal under IPC sections 354-A (sexual harassment), 376 (rape) and 376(2)(k) (rape of a woman by a person being in the position of control or dominance over the woman), and began the trial last month. Term lender IFCI today said that Reliance Marine and Offshore owes it Rs 159 crore and the case for recovery of the amount is pending before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), Ahmedabad. Reliance Marine and Offshore Ltd is a subsidiary of the Anil Ambani-promoted Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd. "At the hearing held on December 19, 2017, the Tribunal has rejected the application filed by Reliance Naval and Engineering Ltd seeking a stay of the NCLT proceedings on the ground that the Constitutional validity of Section 7 IBC is under challenge before the Gujarat High Court," IFCI said in a statement. Bihar vigilance bureau arrests two officials

An additional public prosecutor and a circle officer were arrested by the Bihar Vigilance Bureau today from Sitamarhi and Nalanda districts while accepting bribe. According to a report from Sitamarhi, vigilance sleuths arrested Satyendra Kumar Tiwari, additional public prosecutor at the district court. He was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 21,000. Deputy SP, Vigilance, Maharaja Kanishk Kumar Singh, who led the vigilance team which laid the trap, said Tiwari had demanded the sum from an accused in a case with the promise of helping him out. A report from Nalanda district said circle officer of Hilsa, Subodh Kumar, was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000. UPCOCA bill on lines of MCOCA introduced in UP Assembly

The Uttar Pradesh government today introduced in the state Assembly a bill to enact a stringent law on the the lines of the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) to combat land mafia, mining mafia and organised crimes in the state. The Uttar Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Bill, 2017, was introduced in the House by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath soon after the Question Hour. The state Cabinet had recently approved the draft of the proposed legislation which was prepared in consultation with the Law Department for an effective check on organised crime, mafia and white collared crimes. Briefing reporters after the Cabinet meet last week, senior minister Srikant Sharma had said, "The rule of law is the top priority of the government. Woman's body nibbled by rats in Hyderabad morgue; probe on

Rodents allegedly mutilated a woman's body kept in the mortuary of state-run Osmania General Hospital (OGH) here, prompting Telangana's health authorities to launch a probe today. "An inquiry has been ordered and show-cause notices were issued to those in charge of the mortuary. We have to know the cause...how it happened," said Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr K Ramesh Reddy. It is suspected that rodents had bitten the nose and some other facial parts of the body, he said. The woman's family members, during a visit to the mortuary yesterday, found the body disfigured and complained to the hospital authorities. "It is a modern mortuary...we have asked the officials concerned to verify how the incident happened as the body was kept in a freezer," Reddy said. UP: Women devotees accuse baba, aides of rape

Four women devotees of Sankutir Ashram in Uttar Pradesh's Basti levelled allegations against its self-styled baba and two of his aides on Wednesday for raping and torturing them.The devotees revealed that they were raped, beaten up and exploited by the accused baba, Mahant Swami Sachchidanand, and his followers for years.On expressing her ordeal, one of the victims told ANI, "I am from Chhattisgarh. I came here in 2008 at the age of 12. I was naive and did not know what was being done with me, when I refused to do anything; I was raped by three 'babas' here.""I was also kept captive, beaten up and repeatedly raped. Bank fraud case: Court to hear bizman's bail plea on Jan 3

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) told a court here today that it was likely to file a charge sheet soon against Delhi-based businessman Gagan Dhawan, who was arrested in a Rs 5,000-crore money laundering case. Additional Sessions Judge Sidharth Sharma, who was scheduled to hear Dhawan's bail application today, posted the matter for January 3, considering the submissions made by Special Public Prosecutor Nitesh Rana on behalf of the ED. Pastor jailed for taking upskirt videos of women in Singapore

A pastor who crept up on unsuspecting women to record 12 upskirt videos was today jailed for eight weeks by a court in Singapore, according to a media report. Korean pastor Jo Hang Jun, 33, who worked at Immanuel Mission Church in Singapore, pleaded guilty to five counts of insulting a woman's modesty, the Straits Times reported. CBI arrests SDM office employee while accepting bribe in Delhi

The CBI has arrested an official posted at the office of Delhi's Civil Lines sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a builder for not initiating action against him for "violation" of pollution norms. CBI sources said Rafi Ur Rehman, a data entry operator, was caught red-handed, along with a private person, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 from the builder last night. The builder approached the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) with a complaint that Rehman had visited the site in Sangam Vihar where he was constructing apartments, they said. First year MBBS student raped in medical college campus

A first year female MBBS student of a private medical college was alleged raped in the college campus here, police said today. The female student in her FIR at Mancheswar Police Station alleged that she was raped by a peon of the college while she was returning to hostel yesterday night.
