In a shocking incident, a man set his two wives on fire allegedly for not keeping his mother happy, police said today. The accused, Deepa Ram, yesterday took his two wives Daria Devi (25) and Mali Devi (27) in his car on the pretext of buying them jewellery, the police said. Ram claimed that he was unhappy with them due to some family matters and as they did not keep his mother happy, Additional SP Jalore Binja Ram said. "In the moving car, he quarrelled with them. As the car lost balance, he stopped," Binja Ram said. Meanwhile, one of his wives got out of the car seeking help of locals but he managed to push her inside and drove away again, the police said. After some distance, he came out of the car, locked it and set the vehicle on fire, Ram said, adding both his wives were charred to death. A newly-wed woman was arrested for allegedly stealing cash and jewellery from her husband's house here at Kakda village in the district, police said today. The accused, identified as Jyoti, was absconding for over two months before she was arrested yesterday, they said. According to the police, Jyoti, who recently got married in September, left her husband's house after stealing Rs 70,000 cash and jewellery on October 2. The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered suspension of seven employees for allegedly remaining absent from duty in Jammu, an official said today. Minister for Law and Justice Abdul Haq had yesterday paid a surprise visit to the Directorate of Urdu Coordination Cell, an official spokesman said today. During the inspection, seven employees were found absent and the minister directed the department to place these officials under suspension, he said. He also ordered attachment of the director of Urdu Coordination Cell to the Department of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, the spokesman said. Haq also inspected the translation work being carried out by the Urdu Coordination Cell and cautioned the officers of strict actions against any dereliction of duty on their part.
The Uttar Pradesh State Commission for Women today condemned the killing of an 18- year-old girl who was returning home from college in state's Shamli district. The High Court of Bombay at Goa today dismissed a petition filed by Tehelka's former editor- in-chief Tarun Tejpal seeking the quashing of rape and other charges levelled against him by a former woman colleague. Justice Nutan Sardesai dismissed the petition filed by Tejpal, who is accused of raping the woman during an event in Goa in 2013. The detailed order is expected to be pronounced later in the day. Retired Air Marshal J S Gujral was today granted bail by a Delhi court in the VVIP chopper scam case filed against him, former IAF Chief S P Tyagi and others. Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar granted the relief to Gujral on a personal bond of Rs 2 lakh and a surety of the same amount when he appeared before the court after a summons was issued to him. Tyagi, who was earlier granted bail in the case along with others, also appeared before the court following summons issued in September. The court directed the probe agencies to hand over the chargesheet and other documents filed along with it to the accused and posted the matter for a hearing on May 30. A 23-year-old woman was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by three men here at Basdhara village in the district, police said today. The incident took place yesterday when three men abducted the woman while she was out to collect water from the nearby hand pump, Station House Officer (SHO) BV Singh said. He said the accused allegedly threatened to kill her if she told about the incident to anyone. "The accused were there in the village to attend a marriage. As of now, all three of them are absconding. However, efforts are on to nab them at the earliest," the officer said.
