Delhi HC grants week's time to ED for reply on Vadra's plea in PMLA case

The Delhi High Court on Thursday granted a week's time to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for filing its reply on separate pleas by Robert Vadra and his aide Manoj Arora challenging the constitutional validity of certain sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).Vadra, son-in-law of UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, and Arora have also sought quashing of the FIR against them in a money laundering case.A division bench comprising Justices Hima Kohli and Vinod Goel asked the agency to submit its reply within one week and posted the matter for hearing to July 18.Senior advocate KTS Tulsi, who is from Congress, appeared for Vadra and Arora while senior lawyer Amit Mahajan represented the ED.The money laundering case relates to the alleged purchase of a London-based property at 12, Bryanston Square, worth1.9 million pounds, by Vadra.On April 1, a special CBI court had granted anticipatory bail to the petitioners.During proceedings before the high court on March 25, Solicitor ..

Former cops Vanzara, Amin discharged from Ishrat Jahan case

A special CBI court here Thursday discharged former police officers D G Vanzara and N K Amin from the Ishrat Jahan alleged fake encounter case. The court allowed the discharge applications of Vanzara and Amin, which they had filed after the Gujarat government refused to grant sanction to the CBI to prosecute them. Special CBI court judge J K Pandya said that since the government did not sanction their prosecution, their discharge applications were allowed and proceedings against them would be dropped in the case. Under section 197 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the government's sanction is necessary for the prosecution of a public servant for an act done as part of the official duty. Israeli criminal held in U'khand wanted in Goa in assault case

Notorious Israeli criminal Yaniv Benaim alias Atala, arrested in Uttarakhand for overstaying in India, was wanted by Goa police for allegedly assaulting a Russian national at Anjuna in the coastal state last month, an official said on Thursday. According to reports, Benaim was arrested by Uttarakhand police after immigration officials apprehended him when he tried to sneak into Nepal via the border district in Champawat in Uttarakhand late on Tuesday. He was wanted for assaulting a Russian national, Eduard Goryachev, at Anjuna in North Goa on April 25, the official said. Benaim was booked along with two Russian nationals- Maxim Litronov and Denis- who are still absconding in the case, he added. Benaim had filed an anticipatory bail application in a court in Goa on April 26, the senior police official from Anjuna police station said. Lokpal office to move out of Delhi's five star hotel

The office of country's first Lokpal, the anti-corruption ombudsman, will move out of a five-star luxury hotel in Delhi to its own permanent address. At present, the office of Lokpal works from 'The Ashok' hotel in Chanakyapuri here. "The government is in the process of searching a permanent office for Lokpal," the personnel ministry replied to an RTI application filed by this PTI journalist. It said no payment has so far been made towards rental charges for the Lokpal office at 'The Ashok' hotel. President Ram Nath Kovind had on March 23 administered the oath of office to Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose as the chairperson of the anti-corruption ombudsman. Musharraf requests Pak court to postpone trial in treason case, apologises

Pakistan's former military dictator Pervez Musharraf will not attend the treason trial against him Thursday for suspending the Constitution, citing deteriorating health and requested a special court to postpone the hearing until the end of Ramazan, according to a media report. In an application, supported by a health certificate, furnished by his lawyer Salman Safdar, the former Pakistan president also apologised for not appearing before the court, the Dawn reported on Thursday. A special court indicted Gen (Retd) Musharraf for high treason in March 2014. Musharraf left for Dubai in 2016 to "seek medical treatment" and has not returned since. Three CPI(M) activists booked for 'bogus voting' in Kerala

Three women activists of the ruling CPI(M), including apanchayat member, have been booked on charges of bogus voting in Kasaragod Lok Sabha constituency during the April 23 polls, police said Thursday. The case was registered against N P Saleena, a member of the Cheruthazham panchayat, K P Sumayyah and Padmini based on the complaint of the district collector who is also the returning office,they said adding the case was registered under IPC Sections, 171 C, D and F (undue influence and personation at elections. Special RPF squad helping curb crime: Central Railway

The special crime prevention and detection squad set up by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of the Central Railway (CR) has helped in curbing thefts and other cases in Mumbai division, a senior official has said. The special team, comprising 24 jawans, was set up at the end of 2018 with an objective to control crime against passengers and to keep a watch on their belongings. "The squad works as a shadow team to keep surveillance on the known and previously arrested criminals and their activities," CR chief spokesperson Sunil Udasi said on Wednesday. He said the number of crime against passengers came down in three months- to 1,821 in March this year from 2,140 in January- which shows the effectiveness of the squad. Chhattisgarh: Naxals kill 2 villagers in Sukma

Two villagers were killed by Naxals in Kistaram area of Sukma district on Wednesday night.This comes a day after 15 police personnel and a driver were killed in a landmine blast triggered by Naxalites in Gadchiroli in the neighbouring state of Maharashtra.On April 30, a Naxal, carrying a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on her head for her alleged involvement in attacks on security forces and killing villagers, was arrested from state's Dantewada district.On April 29 six Naxalites, including a woman, were arrested by the security forces from different locations in the state.

Teen run over by lorry in Hyderabad, dies

A 15-year-old boy died and his brother sustained injuries when the two-wheeler they were travelling by was run over by a Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) garbage lorry.The boys were passing through the Kacheguda area of Hyderabad when the incident happened.The body of the deceased, Gokul Karna, has been shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem. Lover held for strangling woman to death

The suspected lover of a woman, who was found dead in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district last month, has been arrested, police said Thursday. Senior Superintendent of Police Sudhir Kumar claimed that the accused, Vikas, had confessed to killing Babita, whose body was found in a jungle at Gadla village in Morna block on April 23. Vikas, who was arrested on Wednesday, and Babita, whose husband had passed away five years ago, had an affair. Babita apparently had been putting pressure on Vikas to marry her, following which he allegedly strangled her to death, the officer added.

Former CIA officer pleads guilty to spying for China

A former CIA officer could spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty on Wednesday to spying for China, the Justice Department said. Jerry Chun Shing Lee, 54, was arrested in January 2018, suspected of having provided information on a CIA network of informants that was brought down by China between 2010 and 2012. Lee pleaded guilty before a US District Court judge in the Eastern District of Virginia to conspiring to provide national defense information to China, the Justice Department said in a statement. Lee, a former CIA case officer, left the Central Intelligence Agency in 2007 and moved to Hong Kong. According to the Justice Department, he was approached by two Chinese intelligence officers in April 2010. They offered to pay Lee $100,000 for information and to take care of him "for life" in exchange for his cooperation, it said. Goa Police sends team to U'khand to get back Israeli criminal: Police

Goa Police has sent a team to Uttarakhand to get back Israeli national Yaniv Benaim alias Atala, a notorious criminal wanted in connection with an assault case in the coastal state. A senior police official from Anjuna police station stated that Atala was arrested by Uttarakhand Police, two days back as he was trying to cross the border and enter Nepal. "We want him in connection with a stabbing case registered against him. We have sent a team to get him back in the state. He would be taken into custody for further investigation," police said.
