The Himachal Pradesh police has formed an eight-member SIT to investigate the rape of a 19-year-old woman in a moving car in Shimla on Sunday night, an official official said. The Special Investigation Team will be headed by Additional Superintendent of Police Parveer Thakur, according to an order issued by DGP Sitaram Mardi this evening. The order came as the opposition Congress cornered the Jai Ram Thakur government on the law and order situation following the incident. Congress leaders, including state party chief Kuldeep Rathore, submitted a memorandum, addressed to President Ram Nath Kovind, to Governor Acharya Devvrat in connection with the rape case. In the one-page order, the DGP said the SIT probe will be monitored by Shimla SP Omapati Jamwal and DIG Southern Range Asif Jalal. A case has been registered against Ramesh Bind, the BJP candidate from Bhadohi, for allegedly making derogatory statements and inciting communal passion, police said Tuesday. Additional Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar said, "Following a complaint filed by Brahman Yuvjan Sabha, a case has been registered against Ramesh Bind at Gopiganj police station." The complainant has alleged that a video of the BJP candidate has gone viral, in which he is seen using derogatory words for the Brahmin community. The SP also said prima facie the voice in the video matches with that of the BJP candidate. "The video dates back to days, when the nominations were not filed, hence it does not amount to violation of model code of conduct," District Election Officer Rajendra Prasad said.
The Delhi Police Tuesday arrested three men for allegedly supplying illicit liquor in the national capital in two separate incidents, officials said. The accused have been identified as Rahees Ahmed (26), a resident of Badaun District in Uttar Pradesh, Sunil Kumar (28), a resident of Wazirpur Industrial Area, and Rakesh Shukla (45),a resident of Ashok Vihar, they said. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ram Gopal Naik, "They got a tip-off on Tuesday regarding the smuggling of illicit liquor from Haryana to Delhi." Subsequently, a raid was conducted near Najafgarh drain, Dwarka where Ahmed and Kumar were apprehended. On their instance, Shukla, the owner of the tempo, was also arrested. A Pakistani journalist was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday. The journalist Amanullah Gharoka, who was the chairman of a press club, was travelling to a village in Parova area bordering South Waziristan when some unidentified gunmen riding a motorbike, fired at him, killing him on the spot, police said. The attackers fled the scene immediately after committing the crime. The local press club condemned the killing of the journalist and strongly deplored the failure of police in combating the increasing target killing incidents in the area.
Two men, who were members of a gang that supplied weapons to criminals in the Delhi-National Capital Region, have been arrested, police said Tuesday. The accused were identified as Suraj (23) and Roop Ram (26), they said. On April 29, police received information that a member of the Nandu gang would come to Khatu Shyam Chowk in Chawla to meet one of his associate. Based on the tip-off, Suraj was arrested, police said. Ram, an arms supplier, was arrested from his house in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura district on information provided by Suraj, police said. Two bills related to enhanced jail sentences for chain-snatchers and redevelopment of old and dilapidated buildings respectively passed in the Gujarat Assembly last year got President Ram Nath Kovind's assent on Tuesday. The Criminal Law (Gujarat Amendment) Bill and The Gujarat Ownership Flats (Amendment) Bill, passed in the Assembly's monsoon session last year, have been approved by the President, informed Pradeepsinh Jadeja, Minister of State for Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs. He said both the bills will be notified as Acts after taking approval from the Election Commission in view of the model code of conduct in force for the April-May Lok Sabha polls. A special court here Tuesday sentenced a 67-year-old man to life imprisonment for fraudulently withdrawing Rs 1.04 crore from a bank by forging signatures of a Dubai-based NRI during 1996-99. The court also imposed a cumulative fine of Rs 5.03 crore on Narendra Patel. CBI court judge S R Tamboli convicted Patel under sections 467 (Forgery of valuable security), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). According to prosecution, Hussain Nensey, a resident of UAE, had in 1996 opened a term deposit of Rs one crore for three years in the SBI's Hughes Road branch in south Mumbai. The fraud was detected in 1999 when Nensey visited the the branch for a business loan against his deposit, it said. During scrutiny, it was found that Rs one crore was withdrawn from Nensey's account using his forged signatures, and also an account was opened in his name using fake documents. A 25-year-old convict has died at state-run J J Hospital here while undergoing treatment for asthma, police said Tuesday. Vakeel Ahmad Sayyad, convicted in a mobile phone theft case, died in the hospital in Central Mumbai Saturday, an official said. He was serving a three-month prison term at Byculla jail here since February 21, said Santosh Bagve, senior police inspector of Nagpada. Vakeel was arrested by the Vashi Railway Police in the theft case, he said. On Friday, he was admitted to the hospital for treatment of asthma but succumbed to the illness the next day, the official said. However, Sayyad's family members alleged he died due to excessive collection of blood from his body by the hospital staff under the pretext of conducting medical tests, said Bagve. He said the deceased's family members have not taken possession of the body as post-mortem is yet to be completed.
Iran has arrested 32 people who had expressed support online for a man accused of murdering a cleric, semi-official news agency ISNA reported Tuesday. Behrouz Hajilouyi allegedly shot Mostafa Ghasemi on Saturday outside the seminary where the Shiite cleric worked in the western Hamedan province. He had confessed to the crime in a now-deleted post on his Instagram account, Fars news agency reported. "Thirty-two people who had left messages of support for Behrouz Hajilouyi on his personal (Instagram) page were identified and arrested," Hamedan police chief Bakhshali Kamrani told ISNA. Hajilouyi's Instagram account shows photos of him posing with pistols, shotguns and automatic rifles. He was shot dead in a firefight with police on Sunday after his car was tracked, according to Kamrani who has not put forward a motive for the cleric's killing. Assange could face a 12-month prison sentence for the violation, although time already served in prison may be taken into account. An Indian woman was apprehended at the Delhi airport Tuesday for allegedly carrying gold bars worth Rs 90 lakh in her hand bag in violation of rules, officials said. Nidhi D Jain was intercepted by CISF personnel at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport here when she arrived from Hong Kong. She was scheduled to take a flight to Mumbai, they said. Three gold bars of one kg each, valued around Rs 90 lakh, were recovered from the woman's hand bag, the officials said. She was handed over to Customs officials as she could not produce the required documents, they said.
