Mumbai: College peon gets five years' rigorous imprisonment for molesting student

A court here sentenced a college peon to five years' rigorous imprisonment on Monday for molesting a girl student. Sanjay Gaikwad was found guilty under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and section 354 (outraging woman's modesty) of the Indian Penal Code by Sessions Judge C A Nathani. On January 20, 2015 the student, then 16 years old, had approached Gaikwad to ask about a lecture when he touched her inappropriately, the complainant had alleged. She complained to the principal, who assured her that action would be taken against Gaekwad. After no action was taken, she lodged a complaint at the D N Nagar police station.

L&T distances itself from Cognizant's Indian bribery case

Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Monday said it is not aware of any evidence that supports its involvement in making the alleged improper payments to power officials in India for securing various clearances on behalf of its client Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp (CTS). "While we cannot comment on Cognizant's decision to enter into these settlements, we are not aware of any evidence that supports our involvement in making the alleged improper payments. We confirm that neither we nor any of our employees are a party to the proceedings brought in the United States. We have no further comments to make on this issue," L&T said in a clarification to the BSE. It added that Cognizant has been a "long-time customer" of L&T. Woman falls off flyover after unidentified vehicle rams into motorcycle, injured

A 20-year-old woman, riding pillion, was injured on Monday after she fell from a height of 50 feet from the Vikaspuri flyover in west Delhi when an unidentified vehicle hit the rear of the motorcycle, police said. A police team rushed to the spot after being informed about the accident at around 4 pm, they added. During inquiry, police learnt that Kunal (18), Sapna (20) and Jia (22) were going towards Janakpuri from Paschim Vihar on the motorcycle. Their vehicle was hit by a speeding vehicle. The impact of the accident was such that one of the pillion riders, Sapna, fell down from the flyover, a senior police officer said. Kunal was riding the motorcycle and lost its control after the vehicle was hit by another, the officer said. A video showing the woman falling from the flyover also surfaced on the social media. Man from Srinagar held for cheating job-seekers of Rs 60 lakh

: A 54-year-old man from Jammu and Kashmir doing business here has been arrested in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly cheating people to the tune of Rs 60 lakh after promising them government jobs, police said Monday. A special police team arrested Gulam Mohammed Illahi alias Gulzar of Srinagar for having cheated24 job-seekers after collectingRs 60 lakh from them, Deputy Commissioner of PoliceAvinash Mohanty said in a press release. He promised the victims employment in Railways, SBI and FCI among others, the official said in the press release. CJI orders inquiry into fake calls made to CJs of two high courts

Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has ordered an inquiry into alleged fake calls made by someone impersonating as the CJI to two high court chief justices, asking them to recommend names of some lawyers as judges of the high courts. The CJI has ordered a probe into the calls made to Telangana High Court Chief Justice T B Radhakrishnan and the acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court L Narayana Swamy and issued an advisory to the judges of high courts not to entertain calls in his name or from his office. The office of the CJI had come to know of the incident during routine conversations with Justices Radhakrishnan and Swamy following which the apex court's registry lodged a complaint at the Tilak Nagar police station. Engineering student in judicial custody for post related to Pulwama attack

A Birbhum district court Monday remanded an engineering student, who had uploaded a controversial post on social media over the Pulwama terror attack, to three days' judicial custody. The court of additional chief judicial magistrate Rampurhat remanded the youth to judicial custody after he was arrested on Sunday following a complaint against him. The student belonged to Nalhati area in the district. HC commutes death sentence of two in kidnapping-murder case

The Gujarat High Court Monday commuted the death sentence of two men, convicted for kidnapping and murdering a five-year-old boy in 2012, to life imprisonment. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and A C Rao dismissed the appeals filed by convicts Akshay Patel and Kuldeep Panchal against the trial court's judgement. The duo would undergo "a minimum of 30 years in jail without remission", the high court said. The trial court at Visnagar in Mehsana district had on March 17, 2016 awarded capital punishment to Akshay Patel and Kuldeep Panchal. They were accused of kidnapping and murdering a five-year-old boy from Visnagar on March 17, 2012 when he was playing with his friends near his house. The boy's father Pratik Patel received calls from Akshay Patel the next day, demanding Rs 50 lakh to release the boy. SC refuses to allow Vedanta to reopen Sterlite plant, sets aside NGT order

In a setback to Vedanta Ltd, the Supreme Court Monday set aside the NGT order that allowed opening of the mining major's Sterlite Plant in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, which was at the centre of massive protests over pollution concerns. The top court, however, gave the liberty to the company to approach the high court against the closure orders of the Tamil Nadu government and its state pollution control board. A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Navin Sinha said that if such a writ petition is filed by the company then it can seek an interim relief considering the fact that their plant at Tuticorin has been shut down since April 9, 2018. The Enforcement Directorate on Monday opposed in the Delhi High Court a plea of alleged lobbyist Deepak Talwar against his detention by Indian agencies after being deported from the UAE in a money-laundering case. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench of justices Siddharth Mridul and Sangita Dhingra Sehgal that some accused do not want to face the material collected against them and instead they challenge the vires and constitutional validity of a law. The court was hearing a habeas corpus plea moved by Talwar, challenging his detention by Indian agencies after his deportation here on January 31. Mumbai: Man sentenced to life imprisonment for murder over Rs 25 lakh loan

A man was Monday sentenced to life imprisonment for stabbing another to death inside a car over a Rs 25 lakh loan he had given to the victim. Additional Sessions Judge Shyayana Patil sentenced Madurai Devendra to life imprisonment for killing Mani Devendra based on circumstantial evidence, including the blood-stained car and testimony of 23 witnesses, said Chief Public Prosecutor Jaisingh Desai. He said Madurai Devendra had given Rs 25 lakh to Mani Devendra which the latter was unable to repay, following which the former killed him. Madurai Devendra called the victim to Juhu on July 23, 2014 and then stabbed him 18 times inside the car and dumped the body in Vidyanidhi Circle nearby, the CPP said. The driver of the car, Parvesh Bhima Devendra, was also sentenced to five years in jail under Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), he said. Maldives arrests ex-leader Yameen over witness tampering: officials

Maldives authorities on Monday detained former strongman president Abdulla Yameen after he was accused of trying to bribe witnesses in his money laundering trial, officials said. The arrest came after the Criminal Court began a hearing into allegations that Yameen received nearly USD 1.5 million in illicit payments just before he lost an election in September and was forced out of power. "Prosecutors said that Yameen had allegedly attempted to bribe witnesses," a court official said, adding that the former president would be held at the Dhoonidhoo prison island near the capital. If convicted, the 59-year-old could face up to 15 years in jail and be fined three times the amount of the fraud involved. Yameen, who came to power in 2013 and jailed many of his opponents or forced them into exile, was summoned to the Criminal Court Sunday to formally receive his indictment. Kulbhushan Jadhav given death sentence in 'opaque trial', should be released: India to ICJ

India on Monday told the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that its national Kulbhushan Jadhav was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court in an "opaque trial" and should be released by Pakistan for violation of Vienna Convention on consular access. "India submits that Pakistan has egregiously violated Article 36 of the Vienna Convention and demands that Jadhav be released forthwith," Indian Advocate Harish Salve argued before the world court.Seeking reversal of his conviction, Salve submitted that Pakistan by not apprising Jadhav, a former Indian Navy officer, of his rights has violated the Vienna Convention.Since Pakistan is one of the States which exercises death penalty to foreign nationals, the State should make sure that Jadhav should be informed of his rights and more importantly allowed consular access since "death penalty is irreparable", he said.While pointing to violations of the Vienna Convention the Indian advocate said that Pakistan had also not complied with

Assam takes up with central agencies release of man lodged in Pak jail

The Assam Police has taken up with the central agencies the issue of consular access and release of Simanta Saikia, a man from the state who is lodged in a Pakistan jail, a state minister said Monday. Assam's Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary told the Assembly that Saikia, who hails from Golaghat district in the state, is lodged in Landhi jail in Karachi in Pakistan. Saikia was taken into custody by Pakistani authorities along with some other Indians, while they were working on a ship at the Indo-Pakistan border, he said. "On being contacted the father of the victim Pradip Saikia disclosed that Simanta Saikia aged about 33 years of village Nabagram, District Golaghat, Assam, was arrested on 28/10/2018 by Pakistani authorities," said Patowary in reply to a starred question by BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia in the House. Prison rule barring kidnapping convicts from semi-open jail challenged in HC

The Delhi High Court on Monday sought the response of the AAP government on a plea challenging the Delhi Prison Rules, 2018, which prevent an inmate convicted of kidnapping from being transferred to a semi-open jail, where prisoners don't live in cells and are assigned rooms. Those in semi-open jail, which is assigned on the basis of an inmate's conduct and work, also get desk jobs within the prison complex.
