India, Pakistan in UN court for death row 'spy' case

India will ask the UN's top court Monday to order Pakistan to take an alleged Indian spy off death row, in a case that could stoke fresh tensions after a deadly attack in Kashmir. Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav was arrested in the restive southwestern Pakistani province of Baluchistan in March 2016 on charges of espionage and sentenced to death by a military court. The International Court of Justice urgently ordered Pakistan in 2017 to stay the execution of Jadhav, pending hearings on the broader Indian case that take place this week in The Hague. Man arrested in for supplying weapons to Khalistan supporters

The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad (ATS) and the State Special Operation Cell, Amritsar, in a joint operation arrested a man for allegedly supplying weapons to Khalistan supporters in Muzaffarnagar, an official said Saturday. Sanjay Rathi alias Guddu was arrested from Itawa village in Muzaffarnagar district on Friday, a statement issued here by the UP ATS said. "Rathi had illegally sold a pistol to Daljeet Singh and Satnam Singh, who were related to the Khalistan movement. Both were arrested in Amritsar. He had also supplied 30-35 pistols to a number of criminals in Amritsar," IG, UP ATS, Asim Arun said.

Delhi court extends interim bail to Robert Vadra till March 2, ED alleges non-cooperation

A Delhi court Saturday extended the interim bail granted to Robert Vadra till March 2 in a money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) even as the agency claimed that he was not cooperating in the matter. Special judge Arvind Kumar granted the relief to Vadra, the brother-in-law of Congress president Rahul Gandhi. The court also extended the protection from arrest granted to his close aide and a co-accused in the case, Manoj Arora, till the next date of hearing i.e. March 2. The ED told the court that it needed to question Vadra in the case and opposed his anticipatory bail plea, saying that he was not cooperating in the case. "Vadra is not cooperating and giving evasive replies," Special Public Prosecutor D P Singh and advocate Nitesh Rana, appearing for the ED, said. Pope Francis has defrocked a former cardinal in a first for the Catholic church over accusations American Theodore McCarrick sexually abused a teenager 50 years ago, a Vatican statement said Saturday. Robert Vadra, Congress president Rahul Gandhi's bother-in-law, Saturday appeared before a Delhi court in a money laundering case lodged by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). He appeared before Special Judge Arvind Kumar. The court had on February 2 granted him interim bail till February 16 and asked him to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and cooperate in the investigation. The case relates to allegations of money laundering in the purchase of a London-based property, located at 12, Bryanston Square, worth 1.9 million pounds, which is allegedly owned by Vadra.

Man, family members get life term for wife's death over dowry demands in Odisha

A local court here has sentenced a man and three members of his family to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife over dowry within five months of the wedding in 2014. Additional District Judge Prasanta Kumar Nayak awarded life sentence to Akhaya Kumar Pal, his father Laxmidhar Pal, mother Subhadra Pal and sister Priyatama Pal on Friday. Akhaya's brother, Ajay Kumar Pal, another accused in the case, died in jail during the trial of the case. According to the prosecution, after Akhaya of Jajpur district married Kusumalata Sahoo in June 2014, he and his family members tortured her for dowry. In November that year, the family of the victim was informed that her body was found in a pond. Subsequently, her brother lodged an FIR, alleging that Kusumlata was murdered by her in-laws over dowry and the five were arrested.

Court orders CBI to conduct probe against Bihar CM in shelter home case

A court here has directed the CBI to conduct an inquiry against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and two senior bureaucrats in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home sex scandal. The special POCSO court here passed the order on Friday on an application filed by an accused, Ashwani, a self-styled medical practitioner who allegedly used to inject the home's inmates with sedatives before they were subject to sexual abuse. Ashwani had alleged in his petition that the CBI was "suppressing facts" in course of the investigation which would come to light if the roles of "former DM, Muzaffarpur, Dharmendra Singh, senior IAS officer Atul Kumar Singh, former divisional commissioner of Muzaffarpur and currently principal secretary, the Social Welfare Department, and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar" were probed. Case registered on missing idols after over 40 yrs

Four decades after an ancient Nataraja idol was stolen from a temple in Tamil Nadu, the state idol wing police have registered a case. The idol worth Rs 50 crore then was stolen in 1972 from a Shiva temple in Thandanthottam village near here, police said. Earlier in 1971, five idols worth Rs 60 crore then were stolen from the same temple, they said. After the second incident of theft, the other idols in the temple were shifted to the safety locker atthe Uppiliappan temple here. Though a complaint was lodged, no case was registered for the past 47 years, and the local police did not give a proper explanation as to why a case was not registered. It is suspected that the stolen Nataraja idol was in England, from where it had been smuggled to America. Also, there were complaints that the idols in the locker had been replaced with fake ones and investigations were on to verify them.

Woman shot dead by great grandson in UP over land dispute

A 60-year-old woman was shot dead by her great grandson in a village here apparently over a land dispute, police said Saturday. The incident took place Friday evening at Nagla Rahi village in the district under the Charthawal police station limits, they said. According to Circle Officer Mohd. Rizwan, the accused, identified as Usman, shot the victim, Rahisa, inside her home over a land dispute. The victim died at the spot, Rizwan said, adding that a case was registered and police were searching for the accused.

Cognizant to pay USD 25 mn to settle India bribery charges

Major American IT player Cognizant will pay USD 25 million to the US Security and Exchange Commission to settle its India bribery charges, as Department of Justice filed criminal cases against two if its former top executives. The two former executives have been charged for their roles in facilitating the payment of millions of dollars in bribe to an Indian government official, the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) said. Cognizant has agreed to pay USD 25 million to settle charges that it violated the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the SEC said. The complaint alleges that in 2014, a senior Tamil Nadu official demanded a USD 2 million bribe from the construction firm responsible for building Cognizant's 2.7 million square foot campus in Chennai. Turkey has not yet revealed all the information it has discovered about the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Friday.
