Two men have been arrested from West Bengal and Jharkhand for allegedly taking out money from bank accounts of several persons in the national capital after obtaining the One Time Passwords or OTPs, officials said Monday. The accused used to initiate transactions, then call the victims and seek the OTPs sent to them by the banks and transfer the money to different e-wallets, they said. The accused have been identified as Binod Kumar Modi (26), a resident of Durgapur in West Bengal and Rikki Kumar (23), a resident of Dumka district in Jharkhand. According to the police, on June 8, 2017, one Jagdish Chander filed a complaint at Kirti Nagar police station in which he stated that Rs 2,42,949 had been withdrawn from his bank account although no transaction was done by him. The Delhi High Court on Monday sought a response from controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi, accused in a cheating and corruption case, on CBI's plea to enhance from Rs 2 crore to Rs 6 crore the security amount he has to furnish to travel to the UAE and Pakistan. Justice Chander Shekhar issued a notice to Qureshi seeking his reply on the plea of the probe agency which has contended that the trial court ought to have mandated higher amount as was done by the high court for a co-accused in the case. The CBI argued the lower court order was perverse as it did not take into account the sensitivity of the case and the stringent conditions imposed on the co-accused, Pradeep Koneru, by the high court. The agency's lawyer sought that the matter be heard on February 13 as Qureshi was scheduled to leave the country on the night of February 14-15. The Madras High Court Monday declined to pass interim orders on a plea by Apollo Hospitals seeking to restrain the Commission of Inquiry from looking into the correctness and adequacy of the medical treatment given to former chief minister J Jayalalithaa before her death in 2016. When the plea came up for hearing before a division bench of justices R Subbiah and Krishnan Ramasamy, the hospital's counsel said they were not challenge the Tamil Nadu-government appointed inquiry commission but only saying it should "not conduct trial". The government has every right to know the circumstances that led to the Jayalalithaa's death, the counsel said. A 23-year-old man was injured after two men allegedly shot at him during a quarrel over a petty issue in Central Delhi's Kamla Market, police said Monday. The incident took place late Sunday night and the two accused were nabbed within two hours, they said. The man, Zubair, is a meat seller in the area and suffered a thigh injury in the incident. Three persons, including two Indians, were arrested in two separate cases for allegedly being involved in smuggling of hashish, police said on Monday. In the first case, two Indian nationals were arrested from Birgunj during a security check at the Indo-Nepal border, they said. Police recovered a total of nine kg from Mohmad Sakil, 38, a resident of Kolkata and Mohmmad Bishal, 26, an Indian national living in Birgunj municipality of Parsa district, when they were going back to India, carrying 4 kg and 5 kg hashish respectively. In a separate incident, a 28-year-old Nepali citizen was arrested from Lalbandi Municipality of Sarlahi district for allegedly being involved in smuggling of the contraband, police said. Acting on a tip off, police raided a house and recovered five kg hashish hidden there, they said, adding that all the three were arrested and a matter is being probed.
Four persons were arrested after demonetised notes with a face value of Rs 3.50 crore were found in their car in Gujarat's Navsari district, police said Monday. A Crime Branch official said the car was coming from Mumbai and was intercepted in Bilimora, over 280 kilometres from here, at around midnight. "There were 43,400 notes of Rs 500 denomination having face value of Rs 2.16 crore and 13,432 notes of Rs 1000 denomination having face value of Rs 1.34 crore. The total face value of the notes is Rs 3,50,82,000," the official informed. He identified the arrested persons as Jitendra Panigrahi, Mohammad Momin (Mumbai), Fakir Motorwala and Altaf Sheikh. Preliminary probe has revealed the accused were supposed to hand over the scrapped notes to a person in Navsari for a commission, he said.
Air Customs officers on Monday arrested a woman for allegedly smuggling gold paste worth Rs 18,08,840 at Dabolim Airport in Goa.According to the officials, the woman, coming from Dubai, was smuggling 590 gram of gold paste.
