Poes garden memorial: HC orders notice to TN govt on plea

The Madras High Court Monday ordered notice to the Tamil Nadu government on a PIL seeking to restrain the state from acquiring the Poes Garden residence of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa and converting it into a memorial using public funds. A division bench of Justices Vineet Kothari and Anita Sumanth ordered notice on the plea moved by activist 'Traffic' K R Ramaswamy. The petitioner contended that the state government should not be allowed to build a memorial for Jayalalithaa "who was declared a convict in the disproportionate assets case by the Supreme Court." The recent move by the government to survey the property and complete the acquisition under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act has prompted the activist to move the court. 2 arrested at Delhi airport with gold bars

Customs officials have arrested two men at the Delhi airport for allegedly trying to smuggle gold bars worth Rs 79 lakh into the country, an official statement said Monday. The duo were intercepted after their arrival from Dubai via Bahrain on Friday, the statement said. A search resulted in the recovery of two gold bars and "one cut-piece of" gold bar, weighing 2.5 kg, wrapped in black adhesive tape, having a market value of Rs 79.11 lakh, it said. The two have been arrested and the gold bars seized, it added.

Centre grants sanction to prosecute Chidambaram in Aircel-Maxis case:CBI

In a setback to former union minister P Chidambaram, the CBI on Monday told a court that the Centre has granted sanction for prosecution of the senior Congress leader in the Aircel-Maxis case. The court, which further extended the protection from arrest to Chidambaram and his son Karti till December 18, also granted three weeks to the probe agency to get sanction against some other people who are accused in the case. Special Judge O P Saini posted the next date of hearing on December 18. There are 18 accused in the case. Besides Chidambaram, sanction is required for the prosection of five public servants. DTC driver killed by speeding bus in Anand Vihar

A DTC bus driver was crushed to death by a speeding bus after he got off his vehicle to set the rear view mirror in position at the Anand Vihar bus terminal, police said Monday. The victim, Shiv Kumar, 35, who used to drive the DTC bus between Anand Vihar and Gurgaon, had stopped his vehicle 50 metres away from the exit gate of the terminal, they said. While he was setting the rear view mirror of his bus, a speeding bus overtook him from the right and he was crushed between the two buses, police said. The accused driver, Idris, 55, was held by those present on the spot. Police were informed and Kumar was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead, they added. Kumar's bus conductor Sachin Tomar was inside the bus, along with two passengers, when the incident took place. "The other bus was being driven at a high speed and Kumar was badly injured. Bomb carrier 'injured' in explosion

A motorcyclist reportedly suffered injuries when the bombs he was carrying exploded in Palamau district on Monday, police said. The police, however, found only the damaged two-wheeler from Pokhra village at Chainpur area as the motorcyclist managed to flee from the spot despite injuries. Superintendent of Police Indrajeet Mahatha said the blast seemed to have taken place following fraction of the explosive materials probably kept in a bag. The bombs were being transported from one place to other, he said adding that the accused would be arrested soon as his vehicle has been seized.

2002 Gandhinagar Akshardham temple attack accused held

Mohammed Farooq Shaikh, an accused in the 2002 Gandhinagar Akshardham temple attack, was on Monday arrested by Ahmedabad Police Crime Branch from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport here.On November 3 last year, Abdul Rashid Ajmeri, the alleged prime conspirator of the terror attack, was arrested from Ahmedabad's airport after his arrival from Saudi Arabia capital Riyadh.Ajmeri, an Ahmedabad resident, had allegedly planned the attack and was a facilitator for Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) in the execution of the crime. He had fled to Riyadh before the attack was carried out.The attack was perpetrated by two terrorists, with alleged links to LeT on September 24, 2002. At least 32 people were killed, while over 80 others were injured in the attack.The two terrorists were killed by the National Security Guard (NSG) commandos.In May 2014, the Supreme Court had discharged all six convicts, who were arrested earlier, in the case. 88 gm of heroin seized, two women arrested in Mizoram

Officials of the Mizoram Excise and Narcotics department Monday seized 88 gms of heroin in Champai district and arrested two women. Two women of Tawipui village in south Mizoram's Lunglei district were arrested for alleged possession of the drugs worth around Rs 4.40 lakh in the local market, the department spokesman said. The two accused were booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985 and produced before a district judge in Champhai. The judge remanded them to judicial custody for 14 days.

CPI(M) suspends Shoranur MLA for six months, Cong demands police

Acting nearly four months after receiving a sexual harassment complaint against party MLA P K Sasi, the ruling CPI(M) Monday suspended him for six months from its primary membership as the opposition Congress demanded a police probe. The decision in this regard was taken at the CPI(M) state committee meeting at AKG Centre, the party headquarters here. A Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) party worker had filed a complaint on August 14 before the party, alleging the MLA tried to sexually abuse her at the party office at Manarcaud in Palakkad. The woman had later forwarded the complaint to the party's national leadership, reportedly following a lukewarm response to it here. Militant hideout busted in J-K; arms and ammunition sized

Security forces busted a militant hideout and seized a cache of arms and ammunition in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district on Monday, police said. Based on specific information, a search operation was launched by police along with the 5 Rashtriya Rifles of the Army in the forest area of Badurkund in the Gutlibagh area of the central Kashmir district, a police official said. He said the hideout was busted during the operation. A cache of arms and ammunition and other usable articles were found in the hideout. These include an INSAS rifle, four magazines, 80 live INSAS rounds, 37 AK-47 rounds, a Chinese grenade and a set of utensils and blankets, the official said. He said the rifle appeared to be one that was snatched from security forces but police were ascertaining the facts. A case has been registered in this connection, the official said.

Late journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh was identified as 'Durjan' (evil person) by the crime sydicate that plotted her murder, the Special Investigation Team probing the case has said, adding artificial intelligence systems were used to verify identity of suspected people in the killing. Inspired by the Goa-based right wing outfit Sanatan Sanstha literature, the syndicate, comprising 18 people, named Lankesh as "Durjan" in August 2016 and started hatching a conspiracy to kill her, the SIT said. The 55-year-old Lankesh, known for her left-leanings and strident anti-Hindutva views, was shot dead in front of her house here on September 5 last year, triggering national outrage and widespread condemnation. Turkey seeks multiple life sentences for 2013 bombing suspect

Turkish prosecutors on Monday demanded multiple life sentences for the prime suspect in a 2013 bombing blamed on Syria which left more than 50 people dead, state media reported. Turkish citizen Yusuf Nazik was caught in September in the Syrian city of Latakia and brought back to Turkey in an operation by the Turkish National Intelligence Organisation (MIT). Nazik is accused of planning the May 2013 Reyhanli bombing which left over 50 people dead in one of the deadliest attacks in Turkey's modern history. At the start of the trial in Ankara attended by Nazik, the public prosecutor sought 53 aggravated life sentences, state news agency Anadolu said. Such sentences have replaced the death penalty in Turkey and carry harsher conditions than normal life sentences. Bypoll for Tiruvarur Assembly seat before Feb 7, Chief Electoral Officer informs HC bench

Tamil Nadu Chief Electoral Officer Satyabrata Sahoo Monday informed the Madras High Court it has been decided to conduct the bypoll for the Tiruvarur Assembly constituency before February 7 next year. In an affidavit filed before the Madurai bench of the high court, he submitted that a case regarding the by-election to the Thiruparankundram constituency was pending before the principal seat and hence it could not be held now. Justices Sasidharan and Audikesavalu closed the public interest litigation (PIL) petition filed by K K Ramesh seeking to direct the Election Commission to hold the by-elections to the two constituencies soon. The two constituencies fell vacant after their MLAs -- late DMK chief M Karunanidhi (Tiruvarur) and A K Bose (Thiruparankunaram) -- passed away and by-elections have to be held within six months after their falling vacant. SC seeks Centre's reply on plea against prior approval to probe govt official for corruption

The Supreme Court Monday sought the Centre's response on a plea challenging the constitutional validity of a provision of the anti-graft law which mandates prior sanction for starting a probe against a government official in a corruption case. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Ajay Rastogi issued notice to the Centre on the PIL filed by NGO 'Centre for Public Interest Litigation' (CPIL) against the validity of amended section 17A (1) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, representing the NGO, said the amended provision makes the prior sanction of appointing authority essential to launch investigation against government servants in corruption cases. "We think that you are entitled to a hearing and so we have issued the notice," he bench said. Gang attacks trio at court complex in Salem

: Three people, who had arrived at a court complex here Monday for a hearing in a property dispute case, were attacked by an armed gang, the police said. Kalburgi killing: SC slams K'taka for 'doing nothing & just fooling around'

The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up the Karnataka government for "doing nothing and just fooling around" in the investigation of killing of noted scholar and rationalist M M Kalburgi in 2015 at Dharwad. The top court indicated that it may transfer the case to Bombay High Court for supervision of investigation after looking into the status report of Karnataka government. A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Navin Sinha asked the Karnataka government to file its status report in two weeks on the investigation done so far in the case. "What have you (Karnataka government) done so far? Nothing. You are just fooling around. How long will you take for completing the investigation? Tell us or we will pass orders," the bench said.
