The Pune Police on Thursday filed a chargesheet against the five accused - advocate Surendra Gadling, Shoma Sen, Mahesh Raut, Sudhir Dhawale and Rona Wilson - in Pune Sessions Court in connection with the Bhima Koregaon violence case.In August, the five accused were arrested from various cities for their alleged involvement in the violence that erupted earlier this year during the 200th anniversary of the Bhima Koregaon battle. "Enough is enough", said the Supreme Court on Thursday expressing displeasure over tardy approach of different high courts and state governments in filling up vacant posts for judges in lowers courts and providing proper infrastructure for them. A 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two men in Greater Noida, police said. The incident took place on November 11 when the woman was returning home in the night from a local bazaar and the accused held her on the road, they said. "A complaint was received at the Knowledge Park police station and an FIR was registered immediately. The police had carried out raids and the accused were arrested late Wednesday night from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida," Circle Officer, Greater Noida 1, Nishank Sharma said. Knowledge Park SHO Arvind Pathak said the duo has been booked under Indian Penal Code section 376 (rape). "They were remanded in judicial custody on Thursday," he said.
A 50-year-old woman was Thursday nabbed in connection with investigations into a case against the Managing Director of the Heera Group of Companies, who was recently arrested for allegedly cheating investors of several crores of rupees, the police said. Central Crime Station, a wing of Hyderabad Police, collected evidence from different sources and found substantial evidence against Molly Thomas, managercum-personal assistant to the MD Nowhera Shaik, deputy commissioner of police (detective department) Avinash Mohanthy said in a release. The Madhya Pradesh High Court Thursday upheld the death sentence awarded to a 19-year-old man for raping and killing a four-year-old girl in Dhar district here. The sentence was upheld by a division bench of Justices S K Awasthi and P K Jaiswal, which had earlier reserved its judgement after hearing both parties on July 30. "The high court, after agreeing with the prosecution's points, ratified the capital punishment awarded to the convict, Karan, by the lower court, and dismissed the petition filed by him (Karan)," government advocate Bhuvan Gautam said. Karan was awarded capital punishment by the lower court on May 17 for raping and killing the minor girl. He had kidnapped the victim in the evening of December 15, 2017 and later raped her in a pit at a secluded place in Manawar town in the district. He then bludgeoned her to death with a stone.
One of the convicts in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case was Thursday assaulted by BJP MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa in Patiala House Courts moments after a court reserved its order on the quantum of punishment to be awarded to two persons for killing two men. The convicts were being taken by policemen to the lock up inside the premises where Tihar or other jail inmates are kept when they are brought for court hearings. Sirsa and his supporters, who claimed to have come in the solidarity with the victims of the riots and their families, had gathered around the courtroom and while both the convicts -- Naresh Sherawat and Yashpal Singh -- were taken out after the court hearing, the BJP leader barged into the police ring around the duo and slapped Yashpal. A police officer in Odisha's Ganjam district was transferred on Thursday, two days after he allegedly assaulted an advocate in a police station of which he was the in-charge. Inspector In-Charge (IIC) of Buguda police station, Rama Chandra Biswal, was transferred to the district headquarters at Chhatrapur, a senior police officer said. DIG (southern range) Asish Singh transferred Biswal and asked the SP (Ganjam) Brijesh Rai to submit a report on the role of the IIC in the incident in which he allegedly assaulted advocate Hara Prasad Das on Tuesday. The DIG also directed the SP to supervise the cases registered relating to the incidents, while a DSP-rank officer will investigate the cases. At least four cases and counter cases have been registered relating to the incidents, sources said. The cases were registered against the IIC and advocate, police added. A head constable posted at Special Task Force in Ferozepur was caught red handed while accepting bribe of Rs 30,000, an official of Punjab Vigilance Bureau said Thursday. HC Mukhtiar Singh was nabbed red handed on the complaint of Mangal Singh of village Chapati in Ferozepur district, the official said. The complainant had approached the vigilance bureau alleging that the accused official was demanding Rs 50,000 to help him in a case and the deal was struck at Rs 30,000. After verifying his information, the vigilance team laid a trap and the accused was arrested on the spot while accepting bribe from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
The National Investigating Agency Thursday filed its reply to an application by 2008 Malegaon blast accused Lieutenant Colonel Shrikant Purohit seeking documents related to the case in "untruncated" form. Purohit, in his application, filed earlier this week, had said documents supplied to him by the prosecution did not have names of witnesses and most of it were in truncated form. "By truncating the documents, the prosecution has deprived the accused his statutory rights to prepare for cross examination and defence," Purohit's application said. The NIA's reply was filed Thursday before special judge V S Padalkar by special public prosecutor Avinash Rasal. The special public prosecutor told court the accused had been provided with the documents in accordance with law. The judge adjourned the matter till November 19 for arguments on whether the accused is entitled to get documents in "untruncated" form. The trial of Byculla Jail's six staff members, who allegedly beat a woman inmate to death for a trivial reason, began before a special court here on Thursday. Manjula Shetye (45), who was serving a life sentence, died at a hospital here on June 23 last year after she was allegedly beaten up by jail staff for failing to account for two eggs and five loaves of bread which she was supposed to distribute to others. Special public prosecutor Vidya Kasle examined the prosecution's first witness, a person who had made a map of the jail for the purpose of investigation. The witness explained the jail's lay-out during his testimony. Defence lawyers prayed to the court that they be allowed to visit the jail before cross-examining him. An alleged drug peddler was arrested Thursday and three kg poppy straw was seized from his possession in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said. Kulbeer Singh, a resident of Chak Babral village, was arrested after police intercepted his truck, coming from Kashmir, at Mansar Morh and found the poppy straw hidden under his seat, a police spokesman said.
