The Passport authorities on Thursday told the Delhi High Court that Sushil Ansal, convicted for the Uphaar cinema fire tragedy which claimed 59 lives, seems to have "deliberately concealed" the details of the criminal case against him while applying for the travel document. The submission was made by the Regional Passport Office (RPO) before Justice Najmi Waziri in response to his query on October 3 as to how a passport was issued in 2000, 2004 and 2013 to Ansal "when the world knew in some way or the other" about the Uphaar tragedy and that he was involved in it. The court had also asked the Ministry of External Affairs to carry out an enquiry against the passport officers who had repeatedly issued the travel document to Ansal and to submit a report before it. A 30-year-old married woman allegedly set herself ablaze at her in-laws' home in south west Delhi's Chhawla area on Thursday, police said. The victim stayed with her husband and in-laws at Shayam Enclave locality in Deen Pur, police said, adding they are missing ever since the incident occurred. The incident was reported to police at 11.50 am following which they reached the spot where the woman's family members were also present. The victim allegedly poured kerosene on herself and then set herself ablaze, police said. The victim was taken to Safdarjung Hospital where it was ascertained that the woman sustained about 20 to 25 per cent burn injuries on her legs and stomach, they said. The woman got married three years ago, they said, adding the sub-divisional magistrate has been informed about the incident. Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain the cause behind taking such an extreme step by the woman.

A fashion designer and her domestic help were allegedly killed by her tailor and his two accomplices in her home in south Delhi's upmarket Vasant Kunj Enclave locality following a dispute over unpaid dues, police said Thursday. The bodies of 53-year-old Maya Lakhani, who ran a boutique called Tulsi Creations in Green Park, and her house help, 50-year-old Bahadur, a Nepalese national, were found with multiple stab wounds in the bungalow early Thursday. Two government engineers were arrested for allegedly taking bribes from a civil contractor in Rajasthan's Udaipur district on Thursday, an Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) official said. Executive engineer Mahaveer Jain and assistant engineer Prakash Bhanawat of the state Agriculture Marketing Board were arrested from Salumbar town after taking a bribe of Rs 34,500 and Rs 1,09,500 respectively from the complainant in lieu of clearing a construction work bill of Rs 17 lakh, said Narottam Lal, assistant superintendent of police, ACB (Jaipur Rural). A case has been registered against the accused under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, the officer added.

The admin of a Whatsapp group was arrested for circulation of alleged "anti-national" messages in the social media group, police said Thursday. Naeem was arrested after receiving a complaint from Dipak Kumar of Bamnauli village in Baraut, a police officer said. According to Kumar's complaint, a WhatsApp group named 'Josh' was circulating objectionable "anti-national" messages, the officer said. After a probe, it was found that the group was run by Naeem, who runs 'Jan Sewa Kendra' (common services centre) in his village, he said, adding that the accused had been arrested.
Nearly 500 employees of Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation in the district went on a strike Thursday to protest an attack on municipal staff. Five employees of the corporation including surveyor Sriram Zople were injured in an attack by a mob at Umbarde village in the district Wednesday, police said. The employees had gone to the village for a survey of a plot where pumping station is proposed to be built. A mob allegedly opposed the survey and attacked them. Five persons were arrested for the attack Thursday, Khadakpada police said. Protesting the incident, employees of the corporation went on a strike.
An accused in the murder case of Communist leader Govind Pansare was Thursday remanded in police custody by a court here. Sessions judge S S Raul sent Amol Arvind Kale (34) in the custody of a special investigation team (SIT) of Maharashtra Police till November 22. Kale was earlier arrested by Karnataka Police in connection with the September 2017 murder of journalist Gouri Lankesh. The SIT told the court that it wanted to probe Kale's alleged role in the murder of Pansare. Pansare, a rationalist thinker and leader of the Communist Party of India, was shot near his house here in February 2015.
