Woman charred to death as shanty catches fire

A 30-year-old woman was charred to death on Wednesday after a shanty located in Panchashil Nagar slum here caught fire, police said. The deceased, Sunita Lahoti, a resident of Bhagur in the district, had come to her aunt's house where the incident took place, they said. The shanty was completely gutted in the blaze, which also damaged some other houses in the slum, in-charge of Bhadrakali police station, Mangalsinh Suryavanshi, said. "Lahoti had come to reside at her aunt Bhagubai Avhad's house in the slum. Before the fire broke out yesterday afternoon, Avhad had stepped out to buy some vegetables, which is why she escaped unhurt," he added. As the area was congested, the fire brigade used extended water pipes to douse the fire. Police have registered a case and initiated a probe into the mishap.

Maha: Man arrested for killing 70-year-old mother in Nashik

A man was arrested for allegedly strangulating his 70-year-old mother to death following a minor quarrel in Maharashtra's Nashik district, police said Thursday. The incident happened Wednesday evening in Ganesh Nagar locality of Wadalagaon here, police added. "Allaudin Sheikh (25) had a squabble with his mother following which he tied her hands and legs and choked her to death. The incident came to light after the accused's brother Bashir reached home late Wednesday evening," an Indira Nagar police station official said. "Allaudin was arrested later and has been charged with murder," he added.

2 arrested in UP for carrying cattle for slaughter

Two persons have been arrested in the district for reportedly transporting cattle for slaughter, police said Thursday. According to the police, Bhushan and Anil Kumar were held near Sindhwali village Wednesday. They were transporting a cow and a bull in a mini truck. Knifes and other tools meant for slaughtering animals were found in their possession, they added.

DA case filed against Telangana district judge

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has registered a case of disproportionate assets against Vaidya Vara Prasad, Additional district judge of Ranga Reddy district court.According to the Director General of the ACB, the Hyderabad High Court has received a complaint against Vaidya Vara Prasad on the basis of which a preliminary verification was conducted.Following the verification, the Hyderabad High Court ordered ACB Telangana to register disproportionate assets case against the judge.As part of the investigation, the ACB conducted searches at the residences of Prasad at Saroor Nagar, Kondapur. The agency also searched the residences of Prasad's associates at four places in Hyderabad, at three places in Sircilla and two places in Maharashtra.Investigation in the matter is underway. HC seeks report on activities of gangsters

The Madras High Court Wednesday took a serious view of recurring clashes between rowdy gangs and sought a comprehensive report from the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government on crime statistics such as number of killings committed by them throughout the country in the last 10 years. A division bench, comprising Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice S Baskaran, also sought year-wise details on the number of paid killers, history-sheeters who are active, cases registered and the heinous crimes committed by them in Tamil Nadu and throughout the country. The bench gave the direction while hearing a petition challenging the detention of Velu, involved in a clash between two groups of rowdies, under the stringent Goondas Act. The court then adjourned the matter to November 30.

Man tied to synagogue shooting suspect arrested

A self-described white nationalist with a social media connection to the suspect in last month's Pittsburgh synagogue massacre faces gun-related charges after his relatives reported concerns about his behavior and violent rhetoric to the FBI, according to court records. Jeffrey Clark Jr., 30, of Washington, D.C., was arrested last Friday after relatives told FBI agents they feared he could be a danger to himself or others. Clark became "really riled up" after his younger brother, Edward, shot and killed himself within hours of the Pittsburgh attack, the relatives told agents. The relatives believed 23-year-old Edward Clark may have been planning to carry out an "act of violence" that day before he went to Theodore Roosevelt Island in Washington and killed himself, an FBI agent wrote in an affidavit. Quack held for death of woman during abortion treatment

A quack in Nadia district was arrested for the death of a pregnant woman who had gone to him to abort the foetus, police said on Wednesday. Aparna Majumder, a 35-year-old homemaker and a mother of two minor boys, went to the chamber of Sushant Poddar at Majdia on Monday seeking to medically terminate her pregnancy. He prescribed her some medicines and after taking them, she complained of high fever, vomiting and abdominal pain. She visited the chamber again the next day with her husband and the quack pushed two injections and sent her home, police said. However, her condition turned serious and, when contacted by her husband, Poddar advised him to take her to a hospital. She was declared brought dead at the Krishnaganj Rural Hospital. The quack visited her home Tuesday and allegedly offered money to hush up the incident. However, someone had informed the police and he was arrested.

1984 anti-Sikh riot case: SIT's extensive measures lead to conviction in 1st case

From calling witnesses from Italy to testify in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case to publishing public notices, the SIT, formed in 2015, took extensive measures to probe the 60 cases it had reopened out of the total 293, and succeeded in getting conviction in the first case on Wednesday. A Delhi court Wednesday convicted two persons for killing two men here during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Of the 650 cases registered in connection with anti-Sikh riots in Delhi, 267 were closed as untraced by the Delhi Police. Of these 267 cases, five were later taken up by the CBI. The SIT also scrutinised the records of 18 cancelled cases. The SIT found 60 cases appropriate for further investigation. It filed "untraced report" in 52 cases in the last one-and-a-half years. Out of the eight cases being investigated, charge sheets have been filed in five and three, in which senior Congress leader Sajjan Kumar is an accused, are pending investigation. Three persons arrested with one kg of brown sugar

Three persons, including a woman, were arrested with one kg of suspected brown sugar in upper Assam's Tinsukia district Wednesday, police said. Based on a tip-off, a joint team of police and CRPF intercepted a car in which three persons were travelling near bypass on Digboi Road, they said. The contraband was estimated to be worth Rs 12 lakh in the international grey market, the sources said. The suspected brown sugar will be sent for testing and investigations are on, the police added.

Elderly woman dies after jumping from terrace

An elderly women was killed while her daughter was seriously injured after they allegedly jumped from the terrace of their house along with a baby in the central part of the city's Battala area Wednesday evening, police said. The incident happened at around 6.30 PM when Sohini Tapadia (62) allegedly jumped off the terrace of her residence on Burtolla Street in Posta Police Station limits, they said. Tapadia's daughter Indira Mohata (30), who was carrying her two-year-old infant daughter also allegedly jumped from the terrace, one senior officer of Kolkata Police said. "Tapadia was declared brought dead when taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Indira is in very critical condition. The baby is miraculously saved and is unhurt," the officer said. Dist judge booked on graft charges in Telangana; Rs 3 cr worth

Assets worth Rs 3 crore were unearthed Wednesday during raids against an additional district judge in Telangana, booked on charges of amassing disproportionate wealth, the state Anti-Corruption Bureau said. Simultaneous searches were carried out in several places in Telangana and in Maharashtra, a day after the bureau registered a case against XIV Additional District Judge Vaidya Vara Prasad of Ranga Reddy district court based on a direction from the high court here, an ACB release said. During the searches at the residence of the judge and also at the houses of his relatives and associates, several documents related to assets, with a market value of about Rs 3 crore, huge expenditure and bank deposits were earthed, ACB officials said. The High Court of Judicature at Hyderabad for the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh had received a complaint petition against the judge that he allegedly amassed huge assets and after due preliminary verification ordered the ACB to .
