Justice Sanjoy Karol was on Wednesday sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. Tripura Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki administered the oath of office and secrecy to Karol at the old Raj Bhavan here. Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb, judges of the high court, state ministers and senior officials were present in the swearing-in ceremony. Karol who was previously a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court has become the fourth chief justice of Tripura High Court. He succeeded Justice Ajay Rastogi who has been elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court. Karol obtained his degree in law from the Himachal Pradesh University and enrolled as an advocate in 1986, practising in various courts. He became a judge of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on March 8, 2007.
The Delhi High Court Wednesday extended till November 28 its order asking the CBI to maintain status quo on proceedings against Special Director Rakesh Asthana, who has sought quashing of an FIR against him in a bribery case. The court did not go in for the full hearing in the matter as it was informed that CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma has not been served with its notice on the pleas by Asthana and DSP Devender Kumar, who is also seeking the quashing of the FIR. Justice Najmi Waziri was also told by the counsel of CBI Joint Director A K Sharma that he was served with the court notice and petition copy Wednesday itself while the court had issued notice to him and Verma on October 23. A court here Wednesday directed Indian pacer Mohammed Shami to appear before it on January 15 in connection with a complaint of cheque bounce filed by his wife, with whom he is embroiled in a marital dispute case. Alipore Judicial Magistrate Md Zafar Parwej, in-charge of the chief judicial magistrate court on this day, said that failure to appear personally may invite a warrant of arrest against Shami. His wife Hasin Jahan filed the case under NI Act after the cricketer had allegedly stopped payment of a cheque which he had given to her for monthly expenses after a marital dispute arose between the two, following which they were residing separately. Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy Wednesday said his government has not indulged in "hate politics" or misused power against mining baron G Janardhana Reddy arrested in connection with a multi-crore ponzi scam case. Reddy, a former Karnataka minister, had alleged "political conspiracy" against him. "Developments are taking place in the court with regard to this case. Neither I nor my government or officials have indulged in hate politics or misused (power) in this issue. I'm saying this very clearly," Kumaraswamy told reporters here. After remaining elusive Since November 7, Reddy had appeared before the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of the city police, which had arrested him Sunday after marathon questioning. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought response of the Centre, the AAP government and the Delhi Assembly Speaker's office on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash's plea challenging the fresh breach of privilege proceedings initiated against him on complaints by two House committees. Justice Vibhu Bakhru, while issuing notice in the matter, declined to pass any interim orders after Delhi government standing counsel Rahul Mehra said nothing was presently happening against the bureaucrat and that his plea was "premature". Mehra said the instant petition be heard on November 27 with an earlier plea of the bureaucrat challenging another breach of privilege proceeding going on against him. Justice Sanjay Kumar Seth Wednesday sworn in as the 24th Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court here at Raj Bhavan. State Governor Anandi Ben Patel administered the oath of office to Justice Seth in a ceremony. "I am going to rev up the e-filing of cases in the courts," chief justice Seth told PTI after taking oath. Responding to a query, chief justice Seth said he would decide his work priorities after returning to Jabalpur, where the high court is based. He was made acting chief justice after the incumbent Hemant Gupta was elevated to the Supreme Court. Before becoming a high court judge, he had served as an additional advocate general. He was enrolled as an advocate on July 24, 1981 and practised in Jabalpur. Seth was appointed as a judge to the high court on March 21, 2003, and was subsequently made a permanent judge on January 19, 2004, as per the high court website. He is slated to retire in June 2019.

Four men were arrested for allegedly transporting nearly two dozen stolen LPG cylinders in Gautam Buddh Nagar, police said Wednesday. The accused would illegally sell the cylinders to people, including college students, for a cost up to Rs 2,000, they said. They were also involved in a robbery at a LPG cylinder agency in Badalpur area on October 28, a police official said, adding the arrests were made near an engineering college police post in Dadri area. Among the accused, two have been identified as Pradeep, Firoz, both residents of Bulandshahr, while Keshav and Rohit are locals, Dadri Station House Officer (SHO) Ram Sen Singh said. "The four men were arrested after 22 cylinders were recovered from their pickup vehicle Tuesday night. Their vehicle was intercepted during a police check set up on a tip-off," Singh said. The Delhi High Court on Wednesday extended the interim relief from arrest to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Director Rakesh Asthana till November 28 in connection with alleged bribery case.During the course of the hearing, counsel for Joint CBI Director AK Sharma sought time to file reply on pleas of Asthana and Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devender Kumar seeking quashing of FIR lodged by the probe agency in the case.Sharma's counsel told the court that agency has incriminating material against Asthana and Kumar.Asthana and Kumar had earlier approched the high court seeking quashing of FIR registered against them. The interim order of status quo in the case will continue till next date of hearing, which is November 28.Asthana came under scrutiny after the CBI filed an FIR against him on the charges of extortion, forgery, bribery and corruption.

A Delhi court Wednesday convicted two persons for killing two men here during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey held Naresh Sherawat and Yashpal Singh guilty of killing Hardev Singh and Avtar Singh in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi during the riots. The case was lodged on a complaint filed by Santokh Singh, brother of Hardev Singh. Delhi police had closed the case in 1994 for want of evidence. However, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) on the riots reopened the case. The court held both the accused guilty under various sections including 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 395 (dacoity) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code. Both the convicts were taken into custody after the judgment. The court is scheduled to hear arguments on the quantum of sentence Thursday where the convicts may get a maximum punishment of death sentence and minimum punishment of life imprisonment.
Panic gripped Malda Medical College & Hospital on Wednesday when a mob, infuriated by the death of a local doctor for alleged medical negligence, went on the rampage causing damage to the property, police said. To bring the situation under control, large number of policemen have been pasted at the hospital premises, they said. Kayim Ali (50), a resident of Sujapur under Kaliachowk Police Station, was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon. He was admitted to the infectious disease ward of the hospital where tests conducted on him showed that he had low platelet count. Ali needed blood transfusion urgently but the hospital delayed it, his family members said. When they protested the delay, the security guards of the hospital attacked them on Tuesday night, they alleged.
