BSF Jawan arrested for possible espionage

The Punjab Police on Sunday arrested a Border Security Force (BSF) official from Ferozpur for allegedly sharing sensitive information with Pakistan.The accused identified as Riyazuddin is an officer of the 29th battalion of the BSF. A case under Sections 3 and 4 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and Section 3-A of the National Security Act 1980 has been registered against him.The police have recovered two mobile phones and several sim cards from the possession of the accused. He is a resident of Latur district in Maharashtra and worked as an operator in the force.Station House Officer of Mumdot Police Station, Ranjit Singh said, "The arrest was made on the basis of a complaint filed by a Deputy Commander Rank officer of the Border Security Force. Suspected ULFA linkman held for Tinsukia killings

A suspected ULFA (Independent) linkman has been held for his possible connection with the killing of five Bengali-speaking persons in Tinsukia district of Assam, a senior police officer said Sunday. He is being interrogated to ascertain his involvement in the incident, Assam Police Additional Director General (Law and Order) Mukesh Agrawal said. "We apprehended one person Saturday and got his five-day police remand from the court. He is known to be an ULFA linkman," he said. "But we cannot say at this moment whether he is still a linkman with ULFA or with some other groups. We are investigating it," the officer said. The person was arrested earlier also around six months back with an IED, Agrawal said. The police officer declined to comment on whether any culprit has been identified for the murder. Unidentified gunmen in battle fatigue had shot dead five persons, including three members of a family, near Kheronibari village in Dhola of Tinsukia district on Thursday night.

Gangster arrested in Delhi after brief exchange of fire with police

A 40-year-old alleged member of the Neetu Daboda gang was arrested after being injured in a brief exchange of fire with police on Sunday in east Delhi's Gazipur area, an official said. The accused, identified as Vinod, a resident of Goela Kalan village in Haryana's Jhajjar district, is a sharp shooter, police said. Based on a tip off, a trap was laid near a paper market in Gazipur, where the accused along with his associate were spotted arriving on a bike, a senior police officer said. The two men were identified and asked to surrender. However, the duo opened fire at the police team, which fired back in retaliation. Vinod was injured on his left leg during the gunfight, he said. Vinod was overpowered and arrested, but his accomplice, Ashok Pradhan, who carries a reward of Rs two lakh on his head, managed to escape, the senior officer said, adding the accused was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital for treatment. Guj: Orphanage official held for molesting four minor girls

Four minor inmates of an orphanage for girls in Gujarat's Anand district were allegedly sexually harassed by its superintendent who was arrested Sunday, the police said. The accused, identified as Minesh Parmar, allegedly made sexual overtures at the girls and touched them inappropriately, a rural police official said. The Jeewan Anand Orphanage, located in Boriyavi village in Anand taluka, is run by a private trust. The four girl inmates have accused Parmar of making sexual overtures, touching them inappropriately and threatening them, the official said, adding that the accused also sought sexual favours from them. The matter came to light after the girls confided in a woman employee of the orphanage, who in turn approached the district child protection committee. Hindu body appeals UP govt to move SC against conviction of PAC jawans in Hashimpura case

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha Sunday appealed to the Uttar Pradesh government to move the Supreme Court against a Delhi High Court verdict, awarding life terms to 16 former jawans of the Provincial Armed Constabulary in the 1987 Hashimpura massacre case. The organisation said it would also pursue in the apex court the appeals on behalf of the PAC jawans. At a news conference, organisation's national vice president Pandit Ashok Sharma, district spokesperson Abhishek Aggarwal and city president Bharat Rajput said the case pertained to the discharge of the official duty by the jawans. Accordingly, the state government must go in an appeal to the apex court against the high court verdict. Extending their support to the convicted former PAC jawans, they said the organisation too would pursue in the apex court the appeal against the high court's verdict. Political worker attacked over 'molestation', four held

Four persons have been arrested for allegedly attacking a political functionary in suburban Chembur after a woman lodged a complaint of molestation against him, the police said Sunday. The incident occurred Saturday night at Sindhi colony in Chunabhatti area, an official said. The injured person has been identified as Karna Bala Dunbale, who is reportedly attached with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). A woman had filed a complaint against Dunbale for touching her inappropriately in the Chembur police station, the official said. Dunbale is not arrested yet as he is undergoing treatment in a hospital, the official said.

1 killed, 2 injured in clash between two groups in West Bengal

One person was killed and two others were injured in North Dinajpur district on Sunday after a clash broke out allegedly between supporters of two political parties, police said. The incident happened at Kamalgach village under the jurisdiction of chopra police station, the police said. Father-daughter duo killed in road accident

A five-year-old girl and her father died when the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a truck on Sunday, the police said. Raj Kumar (35), his wife Poonam, daughter Riya and son Nancy were on their way to a relative's house when the accident happened near Rai Samaspur village, Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Shivji Shukla said. The father-daughter duo died while Poonam and Nancy sustained injuries and were hospitalised, Shukla added. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, he said further.

Collegian out with boyfriend raped in Nagpur; two held

A 19-year-old student of a college was allegedly raped by a man in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, around 820 kms from here, the police said Sunday. The accused and his friend were arrested within hours of the incident which occurred on the night of November 2 along the Hyderabad-Jabalpur highway at Hudkeshwar, an official said. The woman and her male friend are pursuing B.Com in a college and are classmates. The incident occurred when two men spotted the victim and her male friend sitting together behind bushes at an isolated place, he said. The men then attacked the duo and one of them dragged the victim's friend to the road while the other man raped her behind the bushes, the official said. Before leaving, the accused told the woman that his two friends would be coming in a short while and told her not to leave the spot, the official said. Shooting in Sweden leaves 7 people wounded, 12 arrested

Swedish police say seven people have been wounded and 12 arrested in a shooting allegedly linked to biker gang members near the country's second city of Goteborg. Police said Sunday that patrols rushed Saturday evening to the small industrial town of Molnlycke, southeast of Goteborg, where they found "several injured people" following a shooting outside an entertainment venue that was hosting a party. Police said events leading to the shooting were unclear. It is being investigated as an attempted murder. According to the Goteborgs-Posten newspaper, several of the wounded have links to the Hells Angels biker gang. Swedish authorities say the country has seen a rise in organised crime activity in the past few years. Youth caught with over 400 grams of charas in Chamba

A youth was arrested and 404 grams of charas was recovered from him in Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district, the police said Sunday. Tilak Raj, a resident of Meru village in Salooni tehsil of Chamba was caught on Saturday at the Tunnuhatti barrier on Chamba-Pathankot national highway, Superintendent of Police Monica Bhutunguru said. The youth was walking towards Tunnuhatti at around 8.20 pm on Saturday when he was asked to stop by the police personnel, she said. Upon checking his bag, the police found charas and arrested him. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him, she added.

Burglar alarm foils attempt to steal idol at temple in TN

An attempt by a two member-gang to steal a precious emerald idol of Lord Nataraja at a temple in the district Sunday was foiled when the alarm went off, police said. The incident took place early this morning at Thiru Uthuirakosa Mangai, a shaiva temple. Sellamuthu (62), the security guard on duty was attacked by the gang members after he raised an alarm on seeing them hiding in the temple, they said. 'Candidates failing to fulfil income requirement for HC judgeship being recommended'

The government has flagged several recommendations made by high court collegiums to appoint lawyers as judges, saying the candidates fail to fulfil the minimum income requirement. In the past three months, the Department of Justice in the Law Ministry has pointed out at some 25 recommendations where the candidates from the Bar have failed to meet the requirement to have an average annual income of Rs 7 lakh in the preceding five years to be considered for high court judgeship. "We have flagged the issue while forwarding the recommendations to the Supreme Court collegium.The SC collegium would automatically reject such recommendations. But, it is our duty to point out the lacunae," a functionary said. The minimum income requirement is prescribed in the memorandum of procedure, a document which guides the appointment and transfer of high court and Supreme Court judges. As per the established procedure, the high court collegiums send the names of candidates to be appointed as high court .

HC asks UP govt if it has installed CCTC cameras at police stations

The Allahabad High Court has asked the Uttar Pradesh government if it has installed CCTV cameras to monitor police stations in the state and how personnel behave with visitors and victims. The court's Lucknow bench has asked Additional Advocate General V K Sahi to apprise it of the situation on November 27. A bench of Justice A R Masoodi passed the order Saturday on a habeas corpus petition. Petitioner Rishi Kapoor has alleged that his mother Sudha Kapoor was illegally detained at the Aashiyana police station here and hence, she be produced before the court and be further set at liberty. Hearing the petition, the high court summoned Sub-Inspector Ajit Kumar to submit a report on the manner in which the custody and welfare of the alleged detenue was ensured. Four members of family booked for harassing woman over dowry

Four members of a family were booked for allegedly harassing a woman for dowry, police said Sunday. The woman claimed that her husband and in-laws were harassing her for bringing more dowry. She told police that she got married to Ankur of Ambala in Haryana on November 5, 2011. She said that her parents had given them adequate dowry. Pakistan arrests 250 for rioting, disrupting peace

Pakistan police on Sunday arrested nearly 250 people from across the country on charges of arson, vandalism and violence during the three-day mass protests following the acquittal of Christian woman Asia Bibi. A day after striking a deal with the radical Islamist party Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), the government swung into action as it started a crackdown against the people who vandalised public properties during the protests. Asia Bibi, a 47-year-old mother of four, was convicted in 2010 after being accused of insulting Islam in a row with her neighbours. She always maintained her innocence, but has spent most of the past eight years in solitary confinement. In a landmark judgement last Wednesday, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Saqib Nisar overturned the conviction of Aasia Bibi facing execution for blasphemy, sparking protests led by the TLP and other groups across Pakistan.
