Bank loan fraud: ED attaches Haryana firm's assets worth over Rs 58-cr

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday said it has attached assets worth Rs 58.19 crore in connection with a bank loan fraud case against a Haryana-based firm. The central probe agency said the action, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), was taken against the firm Ms Green Valley Plywood Limited of Rohtak as it "got issued letters of credit amounting to Rs 71.79 crore from Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) on the basis of fabricated documents showing sale/purchase of goods." The ED had registered a money laundering case against the firm after taking cognisance of a CBI FIR and charge sheet filed against it last year. "It was further revealed that all these transactions took place on paper without any actual movement of goods. By adopting this modus operandi, Ms Green Valley Plywood Limited caused a loss of Rs 71.79 crore to the IOB," the agency said in a statement.

BCCI submits documents to Probe Panel in alleged sexual harassment case

An independent committee's probe into the alleged sexual harassment charge against BCCI CEO Rahul Johri got underway Thursday with the BCCI submitting "relevant" documents to it and the panel setting November 9 as the deadline for any fresh complainants to come forward. The three-member committee -- comprising former Allahabad High Court judge Justice Rakesh Sharma, former Delhi Commission for Women chairperson Barkha Singh and lawyer Veena Gowda -- met in Mumbai to discuss the terms of reference. It was set up by the Committee of Administrators (COA). Johri has already replied to the showcause notice served by the COA where he has denied all allegations levelled against him. "The BCCI submitted the relevant documents in their possession to the committee. The Committee shall hear and scrutinise the material before it for the next two days," a BCCI release stated. Sebi slaps Rs 1 crore fine on Vibgyor Allied Infrastructure, 3 directors

Markets regulator Sebi has imposed a fine of Rs 1 crore on Kolkata-based Vibgyor Allied Infrastructure and three company directors for failing to repay the money to investors collected illegally. In an order, Sebi said it imposes penalty of Rs 1 crore on Vibgyor Allied and its directors, Rabindra Nath Dey, Raja Bhadra and Rana Bhadra, to be paid "jointly and severally." The regulator in February 2014 through an order directed the entities to refund the money to the investors after it found that the entities had issued optionally fully convertible debentures (OFCDs) to 49,562 investors and raised an amount of Rs 61.76 crore without complying with requirements relating to the public issue. After an appeal by the entities against Sebi in SAT (Securities Appellate Tribunal), the tribunal in January 2016 directed entities to comply with regulator's direction passed in February 2014. Two held for cheating railway job aspirants

Two men were arrested by police in Thane city of Maharashtra Thursday for allegedly duping at least forty persons by promising them jobs in the railway. Police stumbled upon the racket when they arrested one of the accused for illegal possession of firearms, said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Deepak Deoraj here. Acting on a tip-off that a person carrying illegal firearms and ammunition was arriving near Upvan Lake in the city, the Anti-Extortion Cell (AEC) of Thane Crime Branch arrested Rakesh Salunke (30) Thursday morning, the DCP said. Two pistols, a revolver and 18 cartridges were allegedly recovered from Salunke, who said he had procured them from Nitin Pagare (33). Brazil's anti-graft judge Moro meets with president-elect

The Brazilian judge at the center of one of the largest corruption investigations in history is meeting with President-elect Jair Bolsonaro. Judge Sergio Moro was seen by Associated Press journalists entering Bolsonaro's home in Rio de Janeiro early Thursday. Bolsonaro has said he wants Moro to be justice minister or to fill the next vacancy on the Supreme Federal Tribunal, Brazil's top court. Moro told the AP in a statement earlier this week he was honored and considering the possibilities. Turkey urges Saudi cooperation in Khashoggi probe

Turkey's justice minister on Thursday renewed a call on Saudi Arabia to cooperate in the investigation into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, saying "no one can escape responsibility." Abdulhamit Gul said that Saudi Arabia's top prosecutor who spent three days in Istanbul as part of joint Turkish-Saudi efforts to investigate the killing had failed to answer Turkish investigators' questions about the location of the writer's remains as well as who ordered the killing. Asthana's case in HC witnesses verbal spat between ASG and CBI's SPP

The internal feud at the CBI extended Thursday to a verbal spat in the Delhi High Court between an Additional Solicitor General and a Special Public Prosecutor, with both claiming to be representing the premier probe agency in the bribery case involving its Special Director Rakesh Asthana. SC pulls up states, High Courts over delay in recruitment of judges

The Supreme Court on Thursday pulled up state governments and the High Courts for not filling up the vacancies in the subordinate judiciary and cautioned that it may go for a "centralised recruitment process" if vacancies are not filled in time.The bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice UU Lalit and Justice KM Joseph sought personal presence of Registrar Generals of various High Courts and the authorised representatives of the Chief Secretaries of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Delhi and the North-Eastern states on November 15 in this regard.Justice Gogoi said all the states are under its gaze. Australian man held with drugs in Delhi

An Australian man has been arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau here for allegedly possessing about 3 kg of narcotics, a senior official said Thursday. He said the man, who has not yet been identified, was apprehended on October 30 with 2.9 kg of 'hashish' or cannabis resin from the Paharganj area of the national capital. The man, a native of Israel, had come to India on a medical visa in September, the official said. He is a citizen of Australia and has been arrested under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said. The drug was sourced from Himachal Pradesh, the official added.

Boy dies as firecracker goes off in his mouth

A seven-year-old child died after a firecracker exploded in his mouth in Maharashtra's Buldhana district, police said Thursday. The incident took place at Pimpalgaon village under the Raipur Police Station limits Tuesday evening, an official said. Yash Sanjay Gavate, the boy, was bursting crackers with his friends ahead of Diwali, he said. He picked up a 'Sutli Bomb', which had not exploded, thinking it had not been lit. As he playfully bit it, the cracker went off causing serious injuries to the boy, the police official said. Yash was declared dead on arrival at the nearby government hospital, the official added.

Delhi HC's status quo order on proceedings against Asthana extended till Nov 14

The Delhi High Court on Thursday extended till November 14 its order directing the CBI to maintain status quo on proceedings against Special Director Rakesh Asthana, allegedly involved in a bribery case even as the agency said that the complaint against him and others "clearly discloses the cognisable offences". "The interim order to continue till the next date of hearing, that is, November 14," said Justice Najmi Waziri before whom the CBI opposed Asthana's plea seeking quashing of the FIR, stating that there was incriminating material against the special director in the case, the investigation of which was at the nascent stage. Sleeping 10-year-old abducted from home, raped

A group of men allegedly abducted a sleeping 10-year-old girl from her house and raped her in Ganjam district, police said Thursday. Industrialist found dead under suspicious circumstances in Pb

The body of a 22-year-old industrialist was found Thursday inside his car parked along the roadside near a private university in Hardaspur village, police said. The deceased, Jaskaran Singh, owned a machine tools factory at Goraya in Jalandhar district, Satnampura police station Station House Officer (SHO) Surjit Singh Pattar said. Flight attendant suicide case: In-laws surrender before court, sent to 1-day police custody

A Delhi court on Thursday sent the in-laws of flight attendant Anissia Batra, who allegedly committed suicide in July, to one day police custody after their bail plea was rejected. Metropolitan Magistrate Sunaina Sharma sent R S Singhvi and Sushma Singhvi to the custody in the case. The Batra couple surrendered as the court rejected their bail application this morning after finding it devoid of merits. Anissia Batra (39), wife of Mayank Singhvi, worked with a German airline.
