Official caught by Vigilance department while accepting bribe

The Vigilance department Thursday arrested a state government official here while accepting a bribe of Rs 55,000 at his official residence, an official release said. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Gopal Paswan, who headed the vigilance team, Mohd Shah Alam, posted as a Circle Officer in Nirmali, was arrested while accepting the bribe from complainant Mohd Khalid. Khalid had complained to the vigilance department that he belonged to Madhubani district but owned a piece of land falling in Alam's jurisdiction here and the CO had demanded Rs 1.5 lakh for getting the same vacated, Paswan said. Subsequently, a trap was laid down as part of which Khalid convinced Alam to accept Rs 55,000 as an "instalment" at his residence Thursday morning and was subsequently caught red-handed, Paswan said. He will be produced before a designated court after interrogation, the release added.

Nigerian held for sending narcotic substance parcel to Doha

A 38-year-old Nigerian was arrested here Thursday in connection with the seizure of a narcotic substance, the Narcotics Control Bureau said. Based on a tip-off, NCB officials Wednesday seized 200 gm of methamphetamine, a stimulant drug, concealed in small machine parts in a parcel, a release from the bureau said. "The parcel was booked by the arrested person to Doha in Qatar in September. However, it was not delivered in Doha and was returned to Chennai," it said. The release did not disclose the Nigerian's identity and where the seizure was made. The drug was sourced from another Nigerian living in Delhi, it added.

Asaram Bapu's parole plea rejected

The Jodhpur District Parole Committee on Thursday rejected the plea of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu for a 20-day parole.In April, Asaram was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Jodhpur Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Court after he was found guilty of raping a minor girl in Manai village near Jodhpur on August 15, 2013.The court had also sentenced two other accused, Shilpi and Sharad, to 20 years each in jail in connection with the same case.Asaram was found guilty under various charges, including sections 370(4) (trafficking), 342 (wrongful confinement), 354A (outraging modesty), 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation), 109, 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and some sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.Earlier, the self-styled godman's nephew had reportedly contended that Asaram has already spent five years in the jail and was, hence, eligible for parole.

Two Nepalese men held with 3 kg charas in Kullu

Two Nepalese men were arrested with over 3 kg of charas at Sumaropa in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district Thursday, police said. The accused were identified as Tejinder Bahadur and Lal Bahadur. As much as 3.26 kg charas was recovered from their possession during searches at Sumaropa checkpoint, Kullu Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri said. A case was registered against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Kullu police station, she said. Both of them were arrested and further investigation into the matter is on, the SP said.

Minor girl raped by four underage boys

A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in a village under Rudrapur police station area here, police said Thursday. She was raped by four minor boys of the village on Wednesday night, Deoria Police Superintendent N Kolanchi. An FIR has been lodged in connection with the incident, he said, adding the victim has been sent for medical examination.

Maldives ex-president returns from asylum

The first democratically elected president of the Maldives has returned home after more than two years in exile to escape a long prison term. The plane carrying Mohamed Nasheed from Sri Lanka landed in Maldives' capital, Male, on Thursday. He was welcomed by his party members and supporters. Nasheed was sentenced to 13 years in jail in 2015 after being convicted of terrorism for ordering the arrest of a top judge in 2012 while he was president. His trial was criticised internationally for lack of due process. He was offered asylum in Britain when he travelled there for medical treatment on leave from prison. Nasheed was elected president in the country's first multiparty election in 2008. His return follows the election defeat of strongman Yameen Abdul Gayoom.

Occultist gets two years in jail for sexually harassing woman in UP

A court here has sentenced an occultist to two years in jail for sexually harassing a woman. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Shelender Singh also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on the occultist, Imran, after holding him guilty under Section 354 of the IPC on Wednesday. The woman had complained to police that Imran had sexually harassed her when she had gone to him at Simli village in this district for some treatment.

Christian woman acquitted in blasphemy case likely to be flown out of Pak amid death threats

A Christian woman who was convicted of blasphemy and was acquitted by Pakistan's Supreme Court is likely to be flown out of the country as the landmark verdict sparked countrywide protests and death threats from hardline groups. Asia Bibi, a 47-year-old mother of four, was convicted in 2010 after being accused of insulting Islam in a row with her neighbours. She always maintained her innocence, but has spent most of the past eight years in solitary confinement. SC fixes Dec 15 deadline for filing claims, objections for inclusion of names in Assam NRC

The Supreme Court on Thursday fixed December 15 as the deadline for filing of claims and objections for inclusion of names in Assam National Register of Citizens (NRC). A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also allowed claimants for Assam NRC to rely on five documents which were earlier objected to by NRC coordinator. These five documents are: NRC of 1951, voter list of 1966, voter list of 1971, refugee registration certificate till 1971 and ration card issued till 1971. Until now, 10 legacy documents could be used for inclusion and exclusion in the draft NRC, which should have been issued by various authorities and corporations since midnight of March 24, 1971. The top court also fixed timeline for issuance of notice as January 15 to claimants and verification of documents as February 1.

Kamala Mills fire: HC rejects bail pleas of pub owners

The Bombay High Court Thursday rejected the bail pleas of the owners of two eateries in central Mumbai's Kamala Mills compound which were gutted in a fire last December in which 14 people were killed and many injured. Justice Prakash Naik Thursday dismissed the bail applications filed by Yug Pathak, owner of Mojo Bistro, and the owners of 1Above pub - Kripesh Sanghavi, Jigar Sanghavi and Abhijit Mankar. The four accused were arrested in January and are currently in judicial custody. In February, the police filed its charge sheet against 12 accused, including owners of the two restaurants where the fire broke out, owner of the Kamala Mills compound and BMC officials. The 12 accused have been named in the charge sheet under sections of IPC including those for culpable homicide not amounting to murder and causing grievous hurt by act endangering life and personal safety of others. FIR against Asthana shows cognisable offences: CBI to Delhi HC

The CBI on Thursday opposed in the Delhi High Court its Special Director Rakesh Asthana's plea seeking to quash an FIR against him in a bribery case, saying that allegations against the officers and others show cognisable offences. The agency also said the investigation in the case was at nascent stage and it was "handicapped" in the probe as certain files and documents were under the Central Vigilance Commission scrutiny. The files and documents have been sent to the CVC as the Supreme Court has directed the vigilance body to conduct enquiry against CBI Director Alok Kumar Verma. CBI filed the reply in response to the notice issued to it on the petition filed by Asthana against the lodging of case. Aircel-Maxis: Interim protection to P Chidambaram, Karti extended

A Delhi court on Thursday extended interim protection from arrest granted to former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti, in connection with the Aircel-Maxis deal case.The court had extended their interim protection on October 8 while hearing anticipatory bail pleas of the father-son duo seeking protection from arrest by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the case. Earlier, the ED had filed a petition in the top court seeking cancellation of interim relief granted to the two.Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has refused to give an urgent hearing on Karti's plea seeking permission to travel aboard from November 3. Aircel-Maxis case: Court extends protection from arrest to Chidambaram, son till Nov 26

A Delhi court on Thursday extended till November 26 protection from arrest to former Union minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in the Aircel-Maxis money laundering case filed by the CBI and the ED. The Enforcement Directorate filed a reply to Chidambaram's plea for anticipatory bail in the case on Wednesday, maintaining that his custodial interrogation was necessary as he was evasive and non cooperative in the probe. On Thursday, senior advocates Kapil Sibal and A M Singhvi, appearing for Chidambaram, submitted that they will argue on the anticipatory bail application and also respond to the ED's reply. 2 killed, 7 hurt as truck hits tempo in UP

Two persons, including an eight-year-old girl, were killed and seven others injured when a tempo was hit by a truck in Turra village in the Banda UA area here, police said Thursday. The incident took place Wednesday, they said, adding that the deceased were an unidentified youth and an eight-year-old girl, Amina. The injured were rushed to a hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable. The driver of the truck was arrested by the police.
