The Supreme Court Monday stayed the Bombay High Court order refusing extension of time to the state police for filing charge sheet in the Koregaon-Bhima violence case. Recently, the Bombay High Court had set aside the lower court's order allowing extension of time to police to file its probe report against the rights activists in the violence case. Taking note of the appeal of the Maharashtra government, a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi stayed the high court order and issued notice to rights activists on the plea. Earlier, the apex court had refused to interfere with the arrest of five rights activists by the Maharashtra Police in connection with the Koregaon-Bhima violence case and declined to appoint a SIT for probe into their arrest. Uttar Pradesh Shia Central Waqf Board has blamed the Congress party and radical Muslim leaders for the Ayodhya land dispute being, what the board believed, entangled in legalities."Due to some radical Muslims and politics of the Congress party, the issue of construction of the Ram Temple is stuck in courts," the Shia body chief, Syed Waseem Rizvi, said on Monday.Rizvi's comments have come ahead of the Supreme Court hearing pleas challenging the Allahabad High Court ruling. Bangladesh's Supreme Court cleared the way for a lower court to deliver its verdict on Monday in a graft case against imprisoned ex-prime minister and main opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia, rejecting her plea to halt the proceedings. The apex court rejected a leave-to-appeal petition filed by Zia challenging the High Court judgement that allowed a lower court to continue trial in the graft case in her absence. "The Appellate Division (of the Supreme Court) with Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain cleared the way for the court concerned to go on with the trial proceedings," a spokesman for Attorney General's office said. The wife of an Imam of a Delhi-based mosque was allegedly raped by her brother-in-law at Dhandeda village here, police said Monday, adding the woman later got a divorce notice from her husband. The woman was raped and beaten up at her house Sunday when she tried to oppose the accused, Mainuddin, SHO Jitender Kumar said. The victim's husband was not present at the time of the incident, he said, adding the woman has been sent for medical examination. An FIR has been registered against the accused following a complaint by the victim's brother, Kumar said. The SHO said the victim got divorce notice from the Imam after the incident. A 17-year-old student was reportedly injured in celebratory firing during a wedding at Belda village here, police said Monday. A 15-year-old Sikh girl was allegedly raped by two persons in an ambulance in Pakistan's Punjab province, police said Sunday. The girl, said to be mentally unstable, had gone missing on Saturday from a Gurdwara in Nankana Sahib city, some 80 kms from here, police said. When she did not return, her family informed police. The girl's father said that the family spotted an ambulance of Punjab Emergency Services Rescue 1122 parked at Nankana bypass. "We heard a girl screaming inside the ambulance. We rushed to the vehicle and found two men were assaulting our girl," he said, adding that the culprits fled and threw the girl out of the vehicle some two kms away. The family rushed her to hospital where her condition was stated to be stable. A 50-year-old restaurant owner was shot dead Sunday by unidentified assailants at the Jewar area of Gautam Buddh Nagar, police said. The incident occurred when Jaipal, who runs a restaurant in Tappal, was returning home on his two-wheeler, the police said. "At around 7.30 pm when Jaipal reached the Mehndipur cut, he was shot at by the unidentified men. Jaipal was rushed to a private hospital where he breathed his last," Station House Officer Jewar Police Station S S Bhati said. Jaipal, who lived in Gopalgadh town of the district, was shot thrice by the assailants and the locals working in the fields nearby rushed to help him when they heard bullet shots, police said. A senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and District Panchayat member of Chhattisgarh's Dantewada district, Nandlal Mudami, was brutally attacked a group of unidentified people, suspected to be Naxalites. Two unidentified, bike-borne men shot a pharmacy firm employee and stole his motorbike near Kalkaji Mandir Flyover in southeast Delhi, police said Sunday. The incident took place on Saturday when the victim was returning home on his motorcycle from his office in Noida. The victim took the Okhla route as he had to give a bag to one of his friends in the area, they added. As soon as the victim reached the Kalkaji Mandir flyover, two men came from behind and held onto the victim's vehicle. They tried to steal the bike, but the victim resisted, a senior officer said. A sanitation worker has been arrested on the charge of firing at his supervisor in Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) here on Sunday, the police said. A 21-year-old man received serious injuries after he was shot in the leg at Baprola village in outer Delhi's Ranhola on Sunday, police said. The victim identified as Vishal Sehrawat is a resident of Baprola village, a senior police officer said. "We were informed about the incident at 10.00 am. Vishal was shifted to a nearby hospital. The victim is out of danger," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Seju Kuruvilla said. A case was registered and the matter was being probed, police said. A Hoshiarpur youth wanted by Punjab police in an attempt to murder case jumped to death Sunday from a hotel roof in Bilaspur district's Naina Devi after seeing policemen from his state. Five Maoists were arrested on Sunday for their alleged involvement in the killing of a tribal farmer in Malkangiri district five days ago, police said. The Centre has justified before the Supreme Court the amendments brought in the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act to overcome the controversial apex court's order diluting the provision of arrest under the law. The government also said Parliament has the power to bring such amendment. Parliament had on August 9 passed the bill to overturn the apex court's March 20 order concerning safeguards against arrest under the SC/ST Act. The Supreme Court had passed a slew of directions and said a public servant could be arrested in cases lodged under the SC/ST Act only after prior approval by the competent authority. The amendments rule out any provision for anticipatory bail for a person accused of atrocities against SC/STs, notwithstanding any court order.
