Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Sunday seized 6.995 kg gold worth Rs 2,27,82,715 from two persons who had arrived in Chennai Airport in two different flights.The accused have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.As per a statement released by the DRI's Chennai Zonal Unit, the accused have revealed that they were instructed by their Chennai-based handler to travel to Bagdogra (near Nepal border) and receive the gold pieces concealed inside electrical appliances and bring them to Chennai by air.Furthermore, the investigation revealed that the seized gold has been smuggled from Malaysia to Nepal and then into India through the land border. Ahead of the major festival season, DRI has been mounting surveillance over illegal movement of gold into India by organised gangs. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
Unidentified terrorists shot a man in Srinagar's Hyderpora area on Sunday.The victim, identified as Muhammad Amin Dar, sustained grievous gunshot wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. A video of four college students being brutally tortured and forced into performing unnatural sex in Bihar's Begusarai district has gone viral leading to the arrest of seven persons, police said on Sunday. The inmates of Kushwaha hostel, a private students hostel located in Pokhariya area of Town Police Station, were on Wednesday kidnapped by some persons from Kali Asthan chowk, they said. The victims were taken behind Begusarai divisional jail and assaulted by the miscreants. They were then disrobed and forced to indulge in unnatural sexual acts with each other, police added. The accused also shot at the toes of the boarders, all college students in the age group of 18-21, and made them drink liquor, police said, adding that the shocking act continued the entire day. Activist Rahul Easwar, also president of the 'Ayyappa Dharma Sena', was arrested Sunday for his alleged provocative statement related to the entry of women into the Lord Ayyappa temple at Sabarimala, but released on bail by a court. A team of police personnel from Kochi took Easwar into custody from his residence here. He was later taken to Kochi where his arrest was recorded in the evening, police said. Police produced him before First Judicial Magistrate court in Kochi and pressed for his judicial remand, but the court rejected it and released the activist on conditional bail. A 25-year-old man accused of raping and killing a minor in Dwarkapuri area of Madhya Pradesh's Indore district on October 25 was Sunday arrested, a senior police official said. Honey Athwal, who has previously been arrested as a minor for rape and murder, had abducted the 4-year-old girl when she was returning after attending tuition classes Thursday evening. A college professor was shot dead by unidentified assailants in the Nalanda district of Bihar on Sunday morning. The deceased, identified as Arvind Kumar, was a professor at the PMS College (Pairu Mahto Somari College) and a resident of Jalalpur area in the city.Kumar, who was shot at while he was on a morning walk, died on the spot. His body has been sent for postmortem to Bihar Sharif Sadar Hospital.Speaking about the incident, Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar said the police is yet to ascertain the motive behind the attack. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay has filed a review petition in the Supreme Court in connection with its previous order allowing Members of Parliament (MPs) and Member of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) to practice any other profession besides being Parliamentarian.In a verdict delivered on September 25, the apex court had ruled that the legislators could not be banned from practising as lawyers in courts.The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a ban on the legal practice by MPs, MLAs and Member of Legislative Council (MLCs) was then dismissed by a three-judge bench.The Supreme Court had said that there is no law that debars the MPs, MLAs and MLCs from practising as lawyers in court.The initial petition was also filed by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay. A 40-year-old undertrial inmate lodged in Jhalawar sub jail has died under suspicious circumstances after complaining of stomach pain, police said Sunday. Undertrial Dulhe Singh, resident of Rampuriya village here, died Saturday evening while he was being taken to SRG hospital after complaining of severe stomach pain, they said, adding that the body was handed over to the family members Sunday after postmortem by a medical board and investigation into the matter was underway. The deceased inmate, charged under section 16/54 of the Excise Act, was lodged in the jail since October 14, Deputy Jailor, Jhalawar sub jail, Mohan Lal said. Singh was administered first-aid when he first complained of stomach ache on Saturday evening, Lal said. He was being taken to the SGR hospital after his condition deteriorated, the deputy jailor said, adding that the inmate, however, died on the way. Two bike-borne men were killed Sunday after an unidentified vehicle hit them in Rajasthan's Hanumangarh district, police said. Banshilal Suthar (33) and Ramesh Meghwal (33) were on their way to take the examination for Grade-2 teachers when a vehicle hit them near Bhagwan village on the Hanumangarh-Bhadra state highway, SHO, Nohar police station, Ishwar Singh said. A college teacher was shot dead by two bike-borne miscreants in Bihar Sharif, the district headquarters town of Nalanda, on Sunday morning, police said. The incident happened when the teacher was on a morning stroll, the police said. The deceased has been identified as Arvind Kumar (58).
