A man and a woman were shot dead by unidentified assailants for allegedly having illicit relationship here, the police said. Nasim Sah (35) and Sanoja Manjhi (35) were gunned down at latter's residence Saturday, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rajiv Mishra said. Sanoja Manjhi was a housewife and a labourer who used to work with Nasim Sah alias Munna who worked as a mason, the SSP said. Sanoja's brother-in-law has been named in the FIR apart from other unknown persons.
An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has sentenced a member of a religious outfit to 30-year imprisonment for opening fire and injuring former interior minister Ahsan Iqbal in the PML-N government in May. The court in Gujranwala on Saturday also ordered confiscation of assets of 22-year-old Abid Hussain and imposed a fine of Rs 280,000 on him. The convict would have to undergo an additional six-month imprisonment in case of his failure to pay the fine. According to a court official, Judge Syed Imran Shah handed down 27-year imprisonment to Hussain for shooting at Iqbal and another three-year jail term for carrying illegal weapons. The judge said the convict made an assassination attempt on the former interior minister in ex-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's Cabinet by shooting at him during an election rally in Narowal, some 100 kilometres from Lahore, on May 6. The half-burnt body of a teenager has been recovered from a paddy field in Assam's Kokrajhar district, a police officer said Sunday. Prima facie, it seems the woman, aged 18, was raped and burned to death, he said. "The woman was missing since Friday. Her body was found with hands tied at a paddy field in Gendrabeel area of the district Saturday night. It seems she was raped, but nothing can be said for sure before the arrival of the postmortem report," the officer said. Police are carrying out investigations into the case and efforts are on to nab the culprit, he added.
A 37-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in Tindwari Police Station premises here, police said Sunday. Bablu Singh went inside a room in the police station premises on Saturday night and hanged himself from the ceiling, police official Bharat Lal Kumar Pal said. The body, which bore injury marks, was found Saturday evening from a sugarcane field, near the Bidoli police outpost on the Karnal-Meerut highway, Station House Officer (SHO) OP Choudhury said. A former Pakistani judge, named Sikandar Hayat, was on Saturday found to have over 2,200 cars registered in his name.Hayat's legal counsel, Mian Zafar, however, told the Pakistan Supreme Court that his client owned just one car, reported the Dawn. "2,224 cars were registered in the name of my client," Zafar said.Hayat's lawyer further stated that a few days ago, the former judge had received a challan (fine) for a car that he didn't own.After the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department was informed about the same, it surfaced that Hayat was the registered owner of as many as 2,224 vehicles. The apex court has directed the secretary and the director of the Punjab excise department to file a report in the matter.The court has sought the report within a week.
US prosecutors slapped the gunman who killed 11 people in a synagogue with 29 counts of federal crimes of violence and firearms offenses on Saturday, after he carried out the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in recent US history. The charges against shooter Robert Bowers include 11 counts of obstruction of exercise of religious beliefs resulting in death; and 11 counts of use of a firearm to commit murder during a crime of violence, the US Attorney's Office of the Western District of Pennsylvania said in a statement. As many as 11 people were killed in a shooting incident at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburg on Saturday.Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich confirmed that six others were wounded in the shooting, CNN reported. A 29-year-old man was arrested in connection with the killing of a property dealer here, police said Saturday. Forty-six year-old property dealer Surya Prakash was shot dead by unknown assailants in northwest Delhi's Ashok Vihar on July 31, they said. The accused Pravesh Maan alias Sagar was arrested from Mahakal Mandir, police said. It is suspected that Pravesh had a property dispute with the victim, who also had a criminal record, they said. During interrogation, it was revealed that Pravesh was wanted in cases of attempt to murder and extortion, police said, adding that further investigation is underway.
A 25-year-old man was stabbed to death Saturday by unidentified men in northeast Delhi's Nand Nagri, police said. The victim Rahul Gupta, worked in a gas agency, they said. Gupta was returning home when he reportedly got into a fight with three persons, they added. The accused stabbed Gupta and fled the scene, police said. Two men were arrested for allegedly stealing a car, kidnapping its driver and robbing policemen here, officials said Saturday. On the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, a constable was dropping off an ASI, who was in uniform at the time, at his home in Rohini in a dark brown sedan car, they said. The constable stopped the car near Sector-20/21 at around 11.30 pm, police said. Within moments, another car arrived at the scene and blocked the constable's vehicle, officials said, adding that four armed men came out of the car and threatened the ASI and the constable to handover their car keys. In a major crackdown on organised crime syndicates involved in smuggling of gold into India, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has, in a series of operations in the last 48 hours across the country, seized more than 100 kgs of smuggled gold.The raids were conducted in New Delhi, Siliguri, Bengaluru, Chennai and Madurai.The seizures were a part of the continued crackdown by the DRI on gold smuggling and consequent leakage of government revenue, black economy as well as Foreign Exchange illicitly taken out of the country to make payments for such illegal import. In a major operation conducted on October 26, the officers of DRI recovered and seized 55kgs of gold bars (55 pieces), smuggled from neighbouring countries into India through the land border. Three men were arrested and a minor was detained for allegedly killing a man in north-east Delhi's Seelampur area, police said Saturday. The accused were identified as Shahbaz (22), resident of Jafrabad, Jibran (24), resident of Kabir Nagar in Shahdara and Rizwan (22) from Seelampur. A juvenile was also apprehended in the case, they added. On October 15, three armed men shot one Nabi Ahmed in Seelampur when the latter was returning home.
