Pakistan extremists: Don't free Christian woman on death row

A Pakistani extremist Islamist party is demanding the country's Supreme Court uphold the death sentence for a Christian woman convicted of blasphemy. Asia Bibi has appealed her sentence and the court earlier this week postponed ruling on the final appeal. Her lawyers say she was falsely accused. The Tehreek-e-Labbaik party said on Wednesday that if the court's three-judge panel frees Bibi, the judges will face "consequences". The party also says its supporters will rally on Friday to demand death for Bibi. The charge against Bibi dates back to a hot day in 2009 when she went to get water for fellow farm workers. Two Muslim women refused to drink from a container used by a Christian. Bibi was later accused of insulting Islam's prophet, a charge which carries the death penalty.

Capital punishment in Malaysia is currently mandatory for murder, kidnapping, possession of firearms and drug trafficking, among other crimes. The penalty is exclusively carried out by hanging in Malaysia -- a legacy of British colonial rule. Communications and multimedia minister Gobind Singh Deo confirmed the cabinet had resolved to end the death penalty. "I hope the law will be amended soon," he told AFP. The government decided to scrap capital punishment because there had been strong domestic opposition to the practice. The decision was welcomed by rights advocates. "The death penalty is barbarous, and unimaginably cruel," N Surendran, an advisor with the Lawyers for Liberty rights group said in a statement. 'Lackadaisical attitude' in India towards enforcing sexual

As the #MeToo movement gathers momentum, IT industry veteran T V Mohandas Pai Thursday said most of the Indian entities, particularly government organisations, have a 'general lackadaisical attitude' towards enforcing law dealing with sexual harassment at the workplace. The law is adequate, but as usual implementation is weak, the former Chief Financial Officer of Infosys Ltd alleged and claimed that the IT industry was implementing it fairly well, ahead of other industries. All entities need to enforce this within their enterprises but there is a general lackadaisical attitude within most of them, especially media and entertainment, both of which have an 'exaggerated notion' about themselves, Pai said. "Most media seem to believe that they are above the law and powerful, a typical Delhi attitude, and we will probably see more stories coming out," he told PTI. Noting that there is a global movement and more and more women are coming out, Pai said it is a good development
