A large quantity of explosives were recovered and two persons arrested in this connection at Kalidaspur-Dungritola village in Pakur district, police said on Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, Muffasil police station SP Shailendra Prasad Burwal said his team recovered explosives following a raid in a cattle shed, where 30 sacks of ammonium nitrate and 4,500 pieces of gelatin were kept hidden. Frazzled by domestic strife, a woman threw her two children - a newborn girl and a four-year-old boy - into a canal here before jumping into it, police said Wednesday. The incident took place in Dumariya village under Town police station area of West Champaran district where the woman, Antima Devi, was rescued by bystanders who jumped into the Tirhut canal, SHO Mohd Ayub said. He said the woman has been arrested although the children, who were swept away by the strong current, could not be traced. He said the woman, who was now in a state of shock, said she was worked up over frequent quarrels with her husband which led her to take the extreme step late on Tuesday night.
The Congress said Wednesday it has formed a three-member committee to probe the charge of sexual harassment against NSUI national president Fairoz Khan, but stressed it did not want to undermine the investigation being carried out by authorities. Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi said, "As soon as these allegations came out, we had formed a three-member committee which is listening to all sections, all sides before it comes to a conclusion." She, however, said a legal recourse has been taken in the case. Khan has been accused by a woman of sexual harassment. The woman has filed a police complaint against him. A team of Special Task Force of Kolkata Police arrested one person and seized 2,500 kilograms of ganja from his possession, police said Wednesday. Parag Jyoti Saikia (31), a resident of Assam and presently residing at an apartment in New Town, was arrested after police seized the huge qiantity of contraband from him, a police officer said. The accused was arrested last night from Rai Charan Sadhukhan Road near R G Kar Road under Ultadanga police station limits, the police officer said. Surendra Gadling, who was arrested in June for alleged Maoist links, told a court here Wednesday that police wanted to take "revenge" from him as he was arguing several cases against them in his capacity as a lawyer. The Madras High Court Wednesday took a serious view of lack of proper upkeep of land documents by the Tamil Nadu registration department and directed the Inspector General of Registration to appear before it on November 1. Appalled at the dismal condition of some documents submitted in the court by a sub-registrar, Justice N Kirubakaran observed that when the basic documents were damaged or destroyed, it could be safely assumed that nobody's property was safe. After going through a report submitted by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) complying with his earlier order on the action taken to check corruption in the registration department in the past 10 years, the judge said it only appeared to be an eye-wash. A 34-year-old man wanted for allegedly circulating fake currency notes was nabbed Wednesday by the Maharashtra ATS from Andra Pradesh, an official said. The accused Aziz Darvesh Shaikh was picked up from Kurnul town in the southern state by the Nagpada unit of the state ATS, he said. Shaikh was arrested in 2012 along with his three aides--Mehboob Aalam Shaikh, Akram Kabil Shaikh and Nasarul Haque Shaikh--with counterfeit currency notes in denominations of now scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1000, with the face value of Rs 3.80 lakh. Shaikh was chargsheeted but went missing during trial. he said. The Madras High Court Wednesday granted interim stay on defamation proceedings against Murasoli Selvam, editor and publisher of DMK party's mouthpiece 'Murasoli', in a special court set up exclusively for trial of cases against MPs and MLAs. Justice R Mahadevan passed the interim order on a plea by Selvam challenging the transfer of the defamation cases filed by the ruling AIADMK against him to the special court, staying further proceedings for a period of two weeks. In his petition, Selvam said the principal sessions court transferred the defamation cases against him to the special court designated exclusively to hear cases related to MPs and MLAs. He contended that he was neither an MP nor an MLA.
The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to set up special courts for speedy trial of cases involving atrocities on members of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes within eight weeks. The direction was given by the full bench of the high court, which asked the government to start forthwith a consultative process to set up the special courts. The bench comprised Chief Justice DB Bhosale and included Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Yashwant Varma.

Bodies of a man, his wife and daughter bearing stab injuries were found at their residence in Kishangarh area of southwest Delhi's Vasant Kunj on Wednesday morning, following which the couple's son was arrested, police said. The victims were attacked with a kitchen knife. The couple's son Suraj was injured on his finger, they said. After being informed about the incident, police reached the three-room house at 5.20 am and identified the victims as Mithlesh Verma (45), his wife Siya Verma (40) and their daughter Neha (16). The bodies of Neha and Siya were found in one room while Mithlesh Verma's body was found in another room of the house. The weapon used for commission of the crime has been recovered and Suraj arrested, police said. Mithlesh Verma, a contractor, was living with his family in the house for the last 18 years. Police have unearthed an illicit liquor manufacturing unit and arrested one person in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district, an official Wednesday. Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Dharamsal police station raided a location in Bakhar village and unearthed the liquor unit, he said. The team also seized 40 litres of illicit liquor, he said. Twelve alleged cattle smugglers were arrested Wednesday and several heads of cattle were rescued from their possession in Giridih district, police said. Following the direction of Giridih Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar Jha, the police initiated action at Bagodar and Khorimahua and stopped 12 vehicles carrying the cattle and arrested the twelve alleged cattle smugglers, according to police sources. A 24-year-old man has been murdered at Fatehgarh village near Ambala city, police said on Wednesday. The deceased was identified as Jaswinder Singh. The police have registered a murder case against the accused Balwinder and two others, they said. In his complaint lodged with the police, the deceased's brother Rajesh said Jaswinder had gone out to meet someone on Tuesday afternoon, but he did not return till late evening, after which family members started looking for him. When the family members reached the village bus stand late in the night they found two youths holding Jaswinder, while another youth was hitting him on the face with a brick, Rajesh said, adding that seeing the family members the assailants fled the spot immediately.
