Remove from websites news linking JNU student Najeeb Ahmed with ISIS: HC to media houses, YouTube

After allowing the CBI to file a closure report in the case of disappearance of JNU student Najeeb Ahmed, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked some media houses to retract from their websites and YouTube certain news reports and videos which allegedly link him with terrorist organisation ISIS. Justice J R Midha issued the direction on a defamation suit moved by the student's mother, Fatima Nafees, contending that the news reports and videos are defamatory and seeking an apology as well as Rs 2.2 crore in damages from the media houses. Advocate Nabila Hasan, who appeared for Nafees, said "the court has directed all the defendants (media houses) to retract all articles and video clips from their websites and also remove YouTube links". She said the matter was listed for further hearing on October 29 when it will take up Nafees' plea seeking an apology from the media houses. 40-year-old Nepalese woman found hanging from a tree in Bihar

A 40-year-old woman, hailing from the neighbouring country of Nepal, was found hanging from a tree in West Champaran district on Wednesday, police said. The woman, identified as Maya Devi of Nawalparasi district, was found hanging from a tree in Mangurha forest region under Sahodara police station area, SHO Krishna Murari Gupta said. He said the body, hanging with the sari worn by the woman, was first spotted by forest department personnel while they were patrolling the jungle and they informed their superior who, in turn, informed the police. The body has been sent for post mortem after which it would be ascertained as to whether it was a case of suicide or murder after, possibly, sexual assault, Gupta said.

Woman, teenage girl travelling in auto rickshaws molested

A 22-year-old woman and a 14-year-old girl were allegedly molested in separate incidents while they were travelling in auto rickshaws in suburban Andheri, the police said Wednesday. In both the instances, they were touched inappropriately when their auto rickshaws slowed down, prompting the police to suspect that the acts might have been committed by a same person, an official said. The first incident took place Monday night under Oshiwara police station limits when the 22-year-old woman was returning home from work, he said. The teenage girl was touched Sunday night by an unidentified person when she was travelling with her mother under the Amboli police station limits, according to the official. Separate cases were registered by the police under various sections of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act. Efforts are on to identify and nab the accused, the official said.

Gay party organiser burnt alive in Ghaziabad; partner, 2 others held

Police Wednesday claimed to have solved the murder case of a 45-year-old man who was reportedly burnt alive by his homosexual partner and his accomplices in Sahibabad area here. Taiyyab alias Aadi, his brother and a friend were arrested on Tuesday for killing Naveen Kumar Das, SSP Vaibhav Krishna said. According to police, Das used to organise 'gay parties' and was in a relationship with Aadi. The victim had recently booked a flat and asked Aadi to live with him. When Aadi refused, Das threatened to make their relationship public, Krishna said. On the intervening night of October 4 and October 5, Aadi called Das to Loni town. He offered the victim drinks laced with sedatives, the SSP said. Aadi along with his brother and friend later burnt the victim and his car, police said, adding the trio took away Das's ATM card and withdrew Rs 7 lakh from the victim's account. UK physics teacher banned over marriage to 13-year-old Bangladeshi girl

British authorities have banned a physics teacher from the classroom for life after he flew to Bangladesh to marry a 13-year-old girl in 2006, media reports said Wednesday. Joshim Nur was 22 when he began teaching at the London Nautical School, Lambeth, in 2006, a teaching disciplinary panel heard. Nur, now 34, claimed he thought the girl was 18 but a written statement from the girl showed she had told him her age before the arranged marriage. He also had a sexual relationship with the child, the panel heard. He flew to Bangladesh during a summer break and returned to the UK with the girl, named by the panel as Child A. In evidence, the girl told a Teaching Regulation Agency panel that sexual activity started shortly after her marriage to Nur in the summer of 2006. PMLA tribunal directs ED to maintain status quo on properties of Mallya till Nov 26

The appellate tribunal against money laundering on Wednesday directed Enforcement Directorate (ED) to maintain "status quo" with regard to the properties of fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya till November 26. Justice Manmohan Singh, chairman of Appellate Tribunal on Prevention of Money Laundering Act, restrained Mallya from dealing with his movable and immovable properties and creating third party interests. "Till the next date of hearing, Vijay Mallya is restrained not to deal with and alter the status of the movable and immovable properties...and shall not create third party interest in any manner directly or indirectly till the next date," the tribunal said. "The respondent No 1 (ED) shall also maintain the status quo with regard to the properties, the details of which are mentioned in the impugned orders in both appeals till the next date," it added. Goaded by tantric, brothers hack to death sister-in-law in

In a shocking instance of human sacrifice, a woman here has been hacked to death by younger brothers of her husband who were goaded to indulge in the act by a sorcerer, police said on Wednesday. According to Veer Dhirendra, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Sadar, Sitamarhi, Sarita Devi (36) was hacked to death late Tuesday night in Sheohar village under Dumra police station of the district. Two auto-lifters arrested, 5 scooters recovered

Two suspected auto-lifters were arrested for allegedly stealing two-wheelers from different parts of the city, police said Wednesday. The accused were identified as Vipin (24), resident of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, and Sonu Sharma (22), resident of Bihar's Madhepura district. A team was constituted to investigate the cases and it took all the possible angles, including time, place and modus-operandi, into consideration in the recent auto-lifting cases. While the team was analysing the CCTV footages of the areas where the incidents took place, Vipin was identified and then arrested, said Monika Bhardwaj, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (West). Man's fingers chopped off for practising witchcraft, son

All fingers of a 73-year-old man were allegedly chopped off by his son for practising withcraft in West Bengal's Birbhum district, police said Wednesday. The incident took place at Radhakrishnapur village in Bolpur subdivision in the early hours of Tuesday and the man's elder son, who had allegedly committed the act has been arrested, the police said. Police have arrested four others in connection with the incident. Five more Bangladeshis held for staying without valid papers

Five Bangladeshi nationals were arrested Wednesday from nearby Tirupur for staying without any valid documents, police said. Two days ago, three Bangladeshi nationals, working in knitwear units at Tirupur, were arrested as they did not not possess any immigration documents. When they were questioned, they said more people from were staying in Tirupur illegally, following which police conducted searches, police said. Police arrested five Bangladeshis, who were working in garment factories. SC asks lawyers to assist Delhi HC in using live transcription for evidence recording

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked lawyers to assist the Delhi High Court adopt "Live Transcription" for expediting the recording of evidence, especially in commercial matters. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Jopseph, which had taken congizance on its own the delay in disposal of civil cases in Delhi High Court, was informed that fresh rules for civil cases have been approved and would come in force from November 1. BrahMos Aerospace engineer arrested for 'espionage' taken to Lucknow

BrahMos Aerospace engineer Nishant Agrawal, arrested on the charges of espionage, was taken to Lucknow by the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) of Uttar Pradesh police Wednesday, an official said here. A court in Nagpur had given the ATS his three-day transit remand Tuesday. Agrawal was being flown to Lucknow and the UP ATS will produce him before a special court there, a police official said here. SC asks states, UTs to furnish information on status of criminal cases against lawmakers

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted two more weeks to 20 states and union territories (UTs) and their respective high courts to furnish complete updated information about the status of pending and fresh criminal cases against the lawmakers. Out of 36 states and UTs, only 16 of them have so far filed their replies giving information like the status of 1,581 criminal cases which were pending in 2014 against MPs and MLAs. A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi also asked the Centre not to wait for the responses of the state governments and provide infrastructure and other facilities to establish special additional courts for expeditious disposal of cases involving the lawmakers. Woman files police complaint against Maha minister for remarks

A woman has filed a police complaint against Maharashtra Minister of State for Home Deepak Kesarkar, claiming he used inappropriate language when she met him to complain about inaction in nabbing culprits who allegedly gang-raped her and her daughter. HC quashes trafficking case against woman who adopted child without adhering to rules

The Madras High Court Wednesday quashed a child trafficking case against a woman, who in 2017 adopted an abandoned newborn without adhering to rules, observing that she was driven only by the craving and desperation to have a child. While taking a sympathetic view, the court, however, said the quashing of the case should not be treated as a precedent in any other case. Allowing the petition by Helen Anitha of Kanyakumari district, Justice N Anand Venkatesh observed that the child was being brought up with love and affection and had developed attachment to the foster parents. By no stretch of imagination were the petitioners said to be exploiting the child and hence the adoption could not be termed child trafficking, he noted.
