SC orders sealing of 9 properties of Amrapali Group

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered the sealing of nine properties of embattled real estate company Amrapali after its three directors, who are in police custody, said that the documents related to the group's 46 firms were stored there. The three directors moved an application before a bench comprising Justices U U Lalit and D Y Chandrachud stating that they were willing to hand over all the documents but the police was unaware about which one needed to be seized. The court's order came a day after three directors of the group -- Anil Kumar Sharma, Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar -- were ordered to be taken into police custody and the firm was castigated for playing "hide and seek" with the court by not complying with its orders to hand over all the documents to the forensic auditors. NGT directs UP SEIAA to submit report about Noida mall

The National Green Tribunal has directed the Uttar Pradesh environment authority SEIAA to submit report on a mall in Noida following a plea alleging that no valid environmental clearance has been taken for its construction. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel directed the UP State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) to furnish report through e-mail within a month. The tribunal directed the petitioner Dharmendra Singh to to furnish complete set of papers to SEIAA for compliance of this order. "Allegation in this application is that a commercial project 'Spectrum Mall' has been illegally constructed in NOIDA... having built up area of 1,40,360.19 square metre and plot area of 25,471.00 square metre. No valid environmental clearance has been taken. "In view of above allegations, we consider it necessary to require the State Environment Impact Assessment Authority to furnish a report about the factual aspects of the matter within one month," the bench .

Rickshaw driver held for abusing, assaulting woman traffic cop

An auto-rickshaw driver has been arrested in Kalyan town in the district for allegedly abusing and assaulting a traffic woman constable. Nagesh Babu Awalgiri, who is in his twenties, was arrested under IPC sections 353 (assault on public servant), 334 (assault) and 279 (rash driving) late Tuesday night. The incident took place Tuesday evening near Deepak Hotel in Kalyan, said Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar. As Awalgiri had stopped his rickshaw in the middle of the road to take passengers, leading to a traffic jam, constable Asha Gavande asked to see his license. Awalgiri allegedly refused and got into an argument. He allegedly hit her on her hand and drove off. The constable who was holding on to a side bar of the rickshaw was dragged with the vehicle for about 100 metres, the police spokesperson said. Her leg was injured, her complaint said. Following the complaint, the driver was arrested, said DCP traffic Amit Kale. Further probe is on.

Special courts for MLAs, MPs: SC grants 3 weeks time to states

The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted additional three weeks to states which have not filed their responses yet with respect to setting up of special courts in connection with the pending criminal cases against Member of Legislative Assemblies (MLAs) and Member of Parliaments (MPs).The apex court was hearing a petition filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ashwini Upadhyay seeking setting up of special courts and speedy disposal of criminal cases pending against MPs and MLAs.Out of total 29 states and seven union territories, 10 states and one Union Territory (UT) have filed their responses. Among 10 states that have filed responses include Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana, and UT, Delhi. SC seeks Centre's response on decision-making process of Rafale

Without issuing any notice, a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the central government to file a reply with respect to the decision-making process of the Rafale deal in a sealed cover.The top court took the decision after hearing three petitions seeking an investigation into how fighter-jet deal was finalised.Vehemently opposing the petitions, Attorney General (AG) K K Venugopal, the top law officer representing the Union of India, submitted to the apex court that such kinds of petitions should be dismissed as they are politically motivated cases."We are not inclined to issue any notice at present. B'desh court gives death penalty to 19; sentences Khaleda Zia's fugitive son to life

Opposition BNP chief Khaleda Zia's fugitive son and political heir Tarique Rahman was sentenced to life and 19 others, including a former home minister, were given death penalty by a Bangladesh court Wednesday for their role in a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2004. An attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 targeted Hasina, the then opposition leader, when she was about to finish a speech in front of thousands of supporters. While Hasina survived the attack with a partial hearing loss, her party's women front chief and former president Zillur Rahman's wife Ivy Rahman was killed in the blasts. A police constable allegedly shot dead his girlfriend at her home here on her birthday before shooting himself following an argument, officials said Wednesday. Sarawathi (21), pursuing medicine, had befriended Karthick (25), on social media, they said. The incident occurred Tuesday when Karthick had gone to the woman's house on her birthday. Dabholkar murder: CBI likely to file charge sheet by Nov 18, HC told

The CBI is likely to file a charge sheet by November 18 this year against those arrested for the killing of Pune-based rationalist Narendra Dabholkar in 2013, the Bombay High Court was told Wednesday. The central investigating agency has so far arrested or secured the custody of seven persons in the case. Several of them are also alleged to have played a role in the killing of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru last September. Dabholkar (68), known for his pioneering work in eradication of superstitious practices in Maharashtra, was shot dead on August 20, 2013 in Pune while he was taking a morning walk. Police raids in seven countries in Belgian football probe

Police carried out raids in seven countries Wednesday as Belgian prosecutors targeted the country's biggest football clubs as part of an investigation into fraud and match-fixing. A total of 220 police officers carried out 44 house searches across Belgium as well as in France, Luxemburg, Cyprus, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia, Belgian prosecutors said. "A great number of persons have been deprived of their liberty and taken in for a thorough interrogation," the statement said. Federal prosecutors told AFP that the arrests included well-known football agent Mogi Bayat, the former manager of Sporting Charleroi, who had been arrested in his home. 3 more arrested for stabbing man after tempo brushes past pet dog

Three more people were arrested for allegedly stabbing a tempo driver to death after the victim's vehicle brushed past a pet dog in Dwarka's Mohan Garden area, a police officer said Wednesday. On Sunday, 19-year-old Karan Arora was arrested in connection with the case and this week, three more people were nabbed. The three other accused persons were identified as Ankit (24) and Paras (20) and their tenant Dev Chopra (28), the officer said. The dog belonged to Ankit and Paras. The police also seized the knife which was used in the crime. The incident, in which the deceased's elder brother was also injured, took place on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday. My phones being tapped: Mukul Roy

BJP leader Mukul Roy Wednesday accused the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal of "illegally tapping" his phones after two audio clips of his purported telephonic conversation with his party's general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya were circulated on social media. BSF man guns down head constable, injures another

A BSF head constable was killed and another was seriously injured when a constable of the force opened fire with his service rifle at Lakhipur Border Out Post (BOP) in south Assam's Karimganj district, BSF and police sources said on Wednesday. Constable Shiv Yogi Pandey of BSF was on duty in Lakhipur BOP when at around 9:15 pm Tuesday entered into an argument over some issue with two head constables of his company. Accused Shiv Yogi Pandey opened fire with his Insas rifle and shot 9 rounds in which Ashok Kumar Kangaria died on the spot and A R Pal got seriously injured, the sources said. Both Kangaria and Pal were head constables. Pal has been referred to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The accused has fled with the rifle and two loaded magazines with 40 rounds of live ammunition and a wireless set, the sources said.
