CAF constable, friend held for stealing arms to sell it to naxals

A Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) jawan and his friend were arrested for allegedly stealing arms and ammunition from a camp of the security force and trying to sell them to naxals in Dantewada district, police said on Wednesday. Terming it a "very sensitive" issue, Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava claimed that this was the first time a policeman was nabbed for stealing arms and selling to it naxals. The accused, CAF 10th battalion (E company) constable Raju Kujur and his friend Mitthe Netam, were apprehended on Tuesday from Dantewada, around 400 km from here, he said. Both are natives of Osra village in Dantewada's neighbouring Bijapur district, located around 450 km from the state capital Raipur, the SP said. The CAF's E company was deployed in the Barsoor police station area of Dantewada. During interrogation, Kujur claimed that some more police personnel from Bijapur and Dantewada were involved in the nexus, Pallava said, adding more arrests were likely after the .

Elderly couple robbed of cash, jewellery at knifepoint

An elderly couple was robbed of gold ornaments and cash worth Rs 2.40 lakh at knifepoint allegedly by four unidentified persons in outer Delhi's Mianwali Nagar area, police said Wednesday. At around 3.38 am, one Vikas Sahani informed the police about the incident, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer) Seju P Kuruvilla. He said the four unidentified persons barged into his house after breaking the iron rods on the windows while his father, Chaman Lal, and mother, Krishna, were asleep, the DCP said. Holding the elderly couple at knifepoint, the four people looted the money and gold ornaments and then fled from the spot, he said. A case was registered in the matter and a probe was underway, he added.

Khaleda Zia's son sentenced to life in 2004 grenade attack on Hasina

Tarique Rahman, the fugitive son of former Bangladesh premier Khaleda Zia, was sentenced to life and 19 others were given death sentence by a court here on Wednesday over the 2004 grenade attack that killed 24 people and injured 500 others, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The attack on an Awami League rally on August 21, 2004 targeted Hasina, who was the opposition leader at that time. Hasina survived the attack with a partial hearing loss. The verdict comes ahead of the election in December. Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had boycotted the 2014 election. Security was tightened in the capital as the accused were brought to the court. Rahman, 50, was tried in absentia with the court declaring him a "fugitive". He now lives in London where he is believed to have sought asylum though the British authorities have declined to reveal his immigration status. Shameful that law against sexual harassment not being implemented at workplaces: Karat

Senior CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat Wednesday said it was "shameful" that the law dealing with sexual harassment at workplaces was not being implemented in most of the organisations in the country. Karat made the remarks amid the #MeToo movement gaining momentum in the country. More women have come out in social media to narrate their experiences in the wide spectrum of sexual misconduct. "No consent from a woman means any act of sexual nature is an act of sexual harassment. Such men should be punished. It is shameful that the law is not being implemented at most workplaces," she told PTI. The party's politburo member and the All India Democratic Women's Association patron said men will have to be taught the meaning of consent. "Women are breaking the culture of impunity which shields men in positions of power who act as though it is their entitlement that women should be sex objects for their pleasure," she said.

A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour while she was alone at her home here, police said Wednesday. The 20-year-old man committed the crime Tuesday, they said, adding he was arrested on a complaint filed by the girl's family members. Karate teacher held for raping 3-year-old girl

Couple, daughter stabbed to death in Delhi's Vasant Kunj

Thane woman duped of Rs 7 lakh by UK-based man

A 38-year-old woman working with a consultancy firm here in Maharashtra was allegedly duped of Rs 7.3 lakh by a UK-based man whom she befriended on a matrimonial portal, police said. The complainant, who is separated from her husband and lives with her parents here, told the police that while going through the matrimonial site some months back, she befriended the accused, identified as Donald William (23), who claimed to be from Belgravia in London. The man later told the woman that he had sent her a gift parcel and she could take it by making certain payment to a courier company, Thane police spokesperson Sukhada Narkar said. IT raids 16 premises linked to Delhi minister Kailash Gahlot

The Income Tax Department (ITD) Wednesday conducted searches on multiple premises linked to Delhi Transport minister Kailash Gahlot in connection with an alleged tax evasion case, officials said. They said at least 16 locations in and around the national capital are being raided by a team of about 30 ITD sleuths. The searches are being conducted as part of a tax evasion probe against two construction firms linked to the minister and others, the officials said. Gahlot is the minister for transport, law and revenue and is an Aam Admi Party (AAP) MLA from the Najafgarh Assembly Constituency.

Man gets 3 years rigorous imprisonment for abetting wife's suicide

A 36-year-old man has been awarded three years' rigorous imprisonment by a court here in Maharashtra for harassing his wife and driving her to commit suicide. District Judge R V Tamhanekar held the accused, Deepak Bhambhare, guilty last Saturday and also imposed a fine of Rs 7,000 on him. The prosecution told the court that the accused, who worked in a tile-making factory and resided at Rajnoli village in Bhiwandi town, got married to the victim, Manisha, in 2005 and the couple had two sons. The accused used to frequently beat his wife and demand money from her to raise a poultry farm and buy a television set. Unable to bear the harassment, the woman consumed a poisonous substance on December 21, 2013 and died later during treatment, the prosecution said. Based on a complaint by the victim's mother, police filed a case against the accused under the Indian Penal Code Sections 306 (abetment of suicide) and 498A (husband or his relative subjecting woman to cruelty), and arrested him. Hyderabad stray dogs death: Bodies sent for postmortem

Circle Inspector of Ghatkesar police station said the bodies of some dogs that were allegedly poisoned earlier this month have been sent for postmortem."We found dead bodies of some dogs and have sent them for postmortem. We are waiting for the reports," he added.A case was lodged on Sunday based on a complaint filed by an activist, who alleged that nearly 100 stray dogs were poisoned."We have received a complaint from an Animal Activist stating about 100 street dogs have been poisoned near Infosys by local community persons. Woman molested at metro station in Kolkata, 10 arrested

A woman in her early 30s was allegedly molested by a group of 10 people at a metro station in southern part of the city Tuesday, police said. All of the accused were arrested on the basis of the woman's complaint, a senior official of the Kolkata Police said. The incident took place at around 4 pm when she boarded a metro from the Esplanade station. The group started harassing her and when she deboarded at the Mahanayak Uttamkumar station, the accused molested her, he said. The victim, a resident of Howrah district's Konnagar, complained to the RPF personnel on duty following which the ten were detained, a RPF officer said. They were then handed over and arrested by police personnel at the Regent Park Police Station, he said.
