A group in Texas says legal journals at Harvard University and New York University illegally give preference to racial minorities and women when selecting editors and articles. The group, called Faculty, Alumni and Students Opposed to Racial Preferences, filed a federal lawsuit against The Harvard Law Review on Saturday and a separate suit against The NYU Law Review on Sunday. It says the student-run journals previously picked editors and articles based on merit alone but now consider race and sex. The lawsuits say the practice amounts to discrimination and demands that it be stopped. The group's website says its membership is confidential. The group and the law journals did not immediately provide comment. Harvard is separately being sued by a group that says its admissions policies discriminate against Asian-Americans.
A Pakistani court on Tuesday sentenced a 60-year-old disabled man to six-year imprisonment for sexually abusing an eight-year-old girl. Lahore's Additional District and Sessions Judge Rahmat Ali announced the verdict as prosecution established the case that suspect, Muzaffar Hussain, sexually abused the girl at his house. However, the prosecution failed to establish that the suspect committed rape. The convict was present in the court on a wheelchair when the judge announced the verdict. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 500,000 on him. In case of his failure to pay the fine, he will have to serve five more years in jail. Lahore police had lodged a case in 2017 against the convict under sections 376, 364, and 377-A & B of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). The sections deal with offence of rape, kidnapping and sexual abuse. A 45-year-old woman was arrested from the city airport on Tuesday evening for allegedly assaulting officials of a private airline after she and here family members failed to board a flight to Bhubaneswar, police said. Sandipa Mitra, her mother, daughter and another person were going to Bhubaneswar along with her maid servant. Police said Mitra allegedly confined the maid servant at her residence in Chetla area of city for around two weeks and policemen reached the NSCBI Airport before they boarded the flight operated by the airlines. The police rescued the maid servant whose family had lodged a police complaint that she was being confined by Mitra. The rescue of the woman resulted in a delay and they failed to board the plane. A 50-year-old security guard of a cash van was killed after unidentified persons allegedly opened fire at the vehicle-- carrying Rs 4.2 crore-- in an attempt to rob it near the DND toll plaza in east Delhi's Mayur Vihar, police said Tuesday. The failed robbery bid took place on Monday night, police said, adding that the van belonged to a security agency and the victim was accompanied by the custodian of the firm along with the driver. According to police, around three to four persons came in two vehicles, overtook the cash van and forcefully brought it to a halt. With the arrest of four persons, police on Tuesday claimed to have busted an inter district gang of truck lifters. Two revolvers, four motor bikes and six mobile phones were recovered from the gang members, police said. Police arrested the four after the driver of a stolen truck reported to the vehicle owner that unknown miscreants had fled with the truck after assaulting him. Two members of the gang are still at large and they would be arrested soon, police said.
A 35-year-old undertrial prisoner lodged at the Sabarmati Central Prison died in civil hospital here Monday while being in judicial custody on the charge of transporting hooch, officials said Tuesday. A Greater Noida woman was booked Tuesday after she allegedly confined a 13-year-old boy to her home and hurt his genitals with hot tongs for resisting her sexual advances, police said. The incident was reported from Chapraula village under Badalpur police station limits, they said, adding that the woman is absconding after the incident. According to the mother of the 13-year-old boy, the accused woman is from their neighbourhood and had allegedly made sexual advances, a police official said. A woman bank official was shot dead inside her car by an unidentified assailant in Kamrup district near Guwahati on Tuesday evening, police said. When the chauffeur driven car slowed down at Agiathori area, a man on a motorbike wearing a helmet that covered his face broke window pane of the car and shot her from close range, police said. Her driver rushed her to a nearby hospital where she was declared brought dead. The woman was identified as Junu Sarma, an official of Dadara branch of a nationalised bank. An opium inspector and a contractual computer data operator posted at the Narcotics Control Bureau here were arrested for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 1.15 lakh, an official said Tuesday. The accused persons took the money from around nine farmers in Jhalawar and Baran districts, said Additional Superintendent of Police, ACB, Chandrasheel Thakur. Based on a complaint lodged by a farmer based in Atru town, a probe was initiated in the matter, he said. The accused persons, identified as Vipin Gupta and Pankaj Panchal, were arrested by sleuths at the Anti-Corruption Bureau, Thakur said. In 2004, the licenses of the opium farmers were suspended by the state government but in 2018, they were again renewed, he said. Gupta picked up the list of farmers whose licenses were to be renewed and demanded money from them. The decomposed body of a 38-year-old local woman leader of the BJP was found at her residence here in Maharashtra Tuesday, a police official said. Police suspect the victim, Rupali Chavan, a local leader of the BJP's Mahila Morcha who resided in Nallasopara area on outskirts of Mumbai, was killed two days ago. Some neighbours of Chavan, on noticing a foul stench emanating from her house, alerted police officials who broke open the door and found her dead, the official said. The National Criminal Investigation Service said Tuesday "foreign nationals who are not in Norway" were suspected of "attempted murder" in the attack on William Nygaard. But the agency did not specify their number, identity or nationality. William Nygaard was seriously wounded when he was shot three times in the back near his home in Oslo on October 11 1993. A man was arrested here for allegedly raping the 10-year-old daughter of a woman he has been in a live-in relationship with, police said Tuesday. The incident took place Monday night when the minor's mother, a domestic help, had gone out for work, leaving the girl alone, they said. According to SP (City) Shlok Kumar, the accused, Pooran, is a tent house employee and reached home in an inebriated state after which he raped the girl. When her mother returned home, the girl narrated her ordeal. A complaint was lodged on the basis of which the Vijay Nagar police arrested the accused. The girl has been sent for medical examination, police said. The victim's mother has been living with the accused after the death of her husband, they said.
