A 24-year-old man was on Tuesday arrested with 13 grams of heroin at a tourist spot in Himachal Pradesh's Kullu district, police said. Baldev, a resident of Halyatar village in Mandi district was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, Kullu Superintendent of Police Shalini Agnihotri said. A six-year-old student of a government-run school was allegedly molested by a teacher in its premises last month, following which the accused was arrested, police said Tuesday. The police had a tough time controlling the victim's family members who tried to force their way into the school, located in the southern part of the city, Deputy Commissioner of Police (southeast division) Kalyan Mukherjee said. According to the DCP, 10 police personnel, including two officers in-charge of Gariahat and Lake police stations were injured in brickbatting by the protesters. The police had to use the baton to disperse the agitators and three people were arrested for attacking the personnel of the force and destroying public properties, he said. The Supreme Court Tuesday said that Delhi Police was free to investigate a complaint against Amrapali Group of companies as the court had not stayed a criminal probe in any case against the embattled real estate firm. A bench of justices Arun Mishra and U U Lalit, which send three directors of the group to police custody for not handing over all the documents to the forensic auditors, dealt with an application filed by the police in this regard. Additional Solicitor General Vikramjit Banerjee, appearing for the police, told the bench that they wanted to be impleaded as a party in the case since a complaint has been received by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) against the group. In a suspected honour killing, a 23-year-old man was found dead in a cotton field on the outskirts of Vankayagudem village in Karimnagar district Tuesday. The deceased has been identified as Gaddi Kumar of Tadikal village, police said. Huzurabad Assistant Commissioner of Police T.Krupakar said the parents of Kumar had filed a complaint Monday stating that he was missing. The parents alleged that he was in love with a minor girl belonging to another caste in the same village. They suspect that the girl's parents had killed him. The Delhi High Court on Tuesday declined to entertain a PIL seeking directions to the Election Commission of India (EC) to comply with the Supreme Court's directions to de-criminalise politics. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao asked the petitioner, a BJP leader and lawyer, to move the apex court instead if he thought that elections were being held in violation of the Supreme Court's September 25 verdict. It declined to issue any interim direction to the EC. The petitioner, Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay, contended before the court that the EC on October 5 issued a notification for election in five states without putting in place guidelines in accordance with the apex court judgement. A class 10 boy allegedly shot himself dead in the toilet of his school in Purba Barddhaman district on Monday, police said. Kalim Seikh (15) of Dadhia Gopal Das High School, a government aided co-educational school at Ketugram, used a country-made 7 mm pistol to commit suicide, police said. "We heard the sound of a gunshot from the boys' toilet around 11 am shortly after the prayer. When we reached there, Kalim was lying on the floor in a pool of blood," headmaster Biswanath Ghosh said. The authorities informed the police and when the boy was taken to hospital, he was declared dead on arrival. The body was sent for post-mortem examination. Apparently it was a case of suicide and a love affair could be behind it, police said after preliminary investigation. It is not clear how the boy, whose father works in Kerala, procured the pistol. His family members, however, alleged without elaboration that Kalim was killed by his friends.
Former ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan was Tuesday given Rs 50 lakh by the Kerala government in compliance with a recent Supreme Court order awarding the compensation to him for being falsely implicated in the 1994 espionage case. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan handed over a cheque for Rs 50 lakh to 76-year old Narayanan at a function organised at the state secretariat here, three weeks after the apex court ordered the relief holding that he was "arrested unnecessarily, harassed and subjected to mental cruelty." Narayanan said he was very sure from the beginning itself that the case against him was false. 'I am happy that the government is with me," he said. The apex court had on September 14 ordered a probe into the role of the Kerala police in the case and awarded Rs 50 lakh as compensation to Narayanan, directing the state government to pay it within eight weeks. Speaking at the function, Vijayan said the compensation amount had to be paid by the officials responsible .
Two employees of a de-addiction centre were arrested for illegally selling Buprenorphine tablets received from the government, police said Tuesday. The accused were identified as Franklin Lazarus (54) and Manish Kumar Mehta (40), employees of Society for Promotion of Youth and Masses (SPYM). "The Crime Branch received information that the two are involved in illegal sale of narcotic drug Buprenorphine which is supplied by government to the de-addiction centers of SPYM NGO. The drug was meant to be given to addicts admitted there," Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ajit Kumar Singla said. Lazarus was arrested from Vasant Kunj area with an illegal consignment of 3,800 tablets of Buprenorphine which he was supposed to deliver to one of his customers. Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi Tuesday said steps are being taken to ensure that cases, filed in the Supreme Court, do not get deleted. The CJI, on his first day in the office last week, had made clear that "parameters" for urgent mentioning and listing of cases would be laid down and till then, only cases like execution of death penalty and eviction would be treated as urgent. Justice Gogoi said today that the apex court would to like hear as many cases as it can but all of them cannot be heard due to the paucity of time. He assured lawyers, who were waiting in the queue, that a system would be put in place to ensure that once a case is listed for hearing, then it does not get deleted.
