Nothing wrong with interfaith marriages, fraud alliances must stop: Maha CM

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said there was nothing wrong with interfaith marriages, but steps need to be taken against matrimonial alliances through fraud and false identity. Talking to reporters here, Fadnavis said the Supreme Court and Kerala High Court have made observations about the reality of "love jihad". Fadnavis was responding to a question about the state government setting up a committee to study the legal aspects for a new law against forced conversions and cases of 'love jihad". "Love jihad" is a term used by right-wing activists and outfits to allege a conspiracy by Muslim men to convert Hindu women to Islam through marriage. The chief minister said, "It is a reality, and in Maharashtra, incidents of being duped into marriage and then abandoned once children are born are on the rise." He clarified that there was nothing wrong with interfaith marriages, but instances of using fake identities and fraud are serious and need to be curbed. The

SC dismisses plea challenging women-centric laws on allegation of misuse

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a plea challenging certain provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and alleging misuse of women-centric laws. "You can go and raise all these grounds in Parliament," a bench of Justices B R Gavai and K Vinod Chandran told the counsel appearing for the petitioner. The petitioner's counsel said they were seeking to challenge certain provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, including sections 2 and 3. While section 2 of the Act deals with definition of dowry, section 3 pertains to penalty for giving or taking dowry. The counsel said the petitioner was concerned about these laws which adversely impacts men. The public interest litigation (PIL) names laws like the Dowry Prohibition Act, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, and the provision on cruelty to women in the erstwhile Indian Penal Code to question their validity. The plea filed by petitioner Rupshi Singh highlighted the alleged malice in law, the unreasonableness cont

Thai LGBTQ+ couples register marriages as law gives them equal status

Hundreds of LGBTQ+ couples in Thailand made Thursday a life-changing occasion, registering their marriages legally on the first day a law took effect granting them the same rights as heterosexual couples. The enactment of the Marriage Equality Act makes Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia and the third place in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, after Taiwan and Nepal. By the end of Thursday some 1,832 same-sex couples had married nationwide, according to the Department of Provincial Administration. Well over 1,000 registered at district offices, while 185 couples registered their union at a daylong gala celebration at a shopping mall in central Bangkok. The couples included actors Apiwat Porsch Apiwatsayree and Sappanyoo Arm'Panatkool, who tied the knot at the Phra Nakorn district office in Bangkok. We can love, we love equally, legally, said Sappanyoo. And we can build our family in our own way because I believe that every kind of love, every kind of family is beautifu

Singapore concerned over increasing 'sham marriages' with foreign women

Singapore authorities are concerned over the increase in sham marriages or marriages of convenience between Singaporean men and foreign women, which most of the time involves a syndicate and could lead to social problems. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) has highlighted the concern and reported that "sham marriages" have increased to 32 cases between January and September last year compared to just four cases during the same period in 2023. A media report cited ICA as saying that arrests of people involved in "sham marriages" followed vigorous investigations into a suspected syndicate arranging such arrangements between Singaporean men getting paid for marrying foreign women. "Sham marriages" in Singapore often involve a foreign woman paying a Singaporean man money for a union to be arranged, so she can get a permit to stay or work here, reported The Straits Times on Sunday. A marriage of convenience is when two people tie the knot for the sole intention of acquiring

Weddings regain glitz as budgets rise, yet to peak, say industry experts

Marriages might be made in heaven but for those on the earth, the occasion to celebrate the exchange of vows is back to being an expensive affair. And no one's complaining. Not too long ago, the world watched in awe as business tycoon Mukesh Ambani's son Anant Ambani tied the knot with Radhika Merchant in a whopping Rs 5,000-crore affair. While those are astronomical numbers, the middle class and upper middle class, too, joined the party through 2024 and the lull in the wedding market seen in 2020-2021 appears to be a thing of the past. According to a Justdial report released on December 24, metropolitan cities drove 34 per cent growth in demand for wedding services with the national capital dominating with a 44 per cent rise in wedding searches and 4x surge in resort venue searches. Till November this year, wedding budgets saw a 6.7 per cent increase year-on-year with the average spend at Rs 35.6 lakh, according to a survey done by all-in-one wedding planning solutions provider ..

Marriage is a relationship built on mutual trust, companionship: SC

"Marriage is a relationship built on mutual trust, companionship and shared experiences," the Supreme Court has said as it upheld a Madras High Court decision granting divorce to an estranged software engineer couple. A bench of justices Vikram Nath and PB Varale said the length of separation and the evident animosity between husband and wife make it clear that there is no possibility of the marriage being revived. "Marriage is a relationship built on mutual trust, companionship, and shared experiences. When these essential elements are missing for an extended period, the marital bond becomes a mere legal formality devoid of any substance," the bench said. It added that the court has consistently held that prolonged separation, coupled with inability to reconcile, is a relevant factor in deciding matrimonial disputes. "In the present case, the length of separation and the evident animosity between the parties make it clear that there is no possibility of the marriage being revived,

Strict laws are for welfare of women, not for extorting their husbands: SC

The Supreme Court on Thursday said the strict provisions of law were for the welfare of women and not means to "chastise, threaten, domineer or extort" their husbands. Justices B V Nagarathna and Pankaj Mithal observed a Hindu marriage was considered to be a sacred institution, as a foundation for a family and not a "commercial venture". Notably, the bench observed the invocation of IPC sections including rape, criminal intimidation and subjecting a married woman to cruelty -- as a "combined package" in most of the complaints related to matrimonial disputes -- was condemned by the top court on several occasions. "The women need to be careful about the fact that these strict provisions of law in their hands are beneficial legislations for their welfare and not means to chastise, threaten, domineer or extort from their husbands," it said. The observations came when the bench dissolved the marriage between an estranged couple on the ground of its irretrievable breakdown. "The provisi
