President Droupadi Murmu on Friday said India has the world's third-largest metro network spanning over 1,000 km and emphasised that efforts to streamline urban transportation are underway. Addressing a joint sitting of Parliament, which marked the start of the Budget session, Murmu said that metro projects in Delhi, Pune, Thane and Bengaluru, along with the recently launched Namo Bharat Rapid Rail on the Ahmedabad-Bhuj route, are shaping the cities of a 'Viksit Bharat'. To accelerate the journey towards 'Viksit Bharat', it is essential to make Indian cities future-ready, she said. In this direction, the government is focused on modernising urban amenities and making them energy-efficient. Simultaneously, the foundation is being laid for the development of new cities, she added. "Today, I am extremely pleased to share that India's metro network has crossed the milestone of 1,000 kilometres. India has now become the third-largest country in the world in terms of the metro network,"

Republic Day: Delhi Metro to start service early on Jan 26 for parade-goers

Delhi Metro will start its services at 3 am on Republic Day to facilitate people to reach Kartavya Path, according to an official statement. As the nation celebrates the pride and spirit of Republic Day, Delhi Metro will commence its services at 3 am on all lines on Sunday to help people reach Kartavya Path and witness the Republic Day ceremony, the statement said. Trains will operate at intervals of 30 minutes until 6 am to ensure smooth travel for commuters, after which regular timetable will be followed for the rest of the day, it added. Passengers are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly and make use of the early metro services to avoid any last-minute inconvenience, it said.

With the success of the Kochi Water Metro, efforts are on to replicate the eco-friendly and innovative water transport model in 18 locations nationwide, Kochi Metro Rail Ltd said. KMRL, which operates and maintains the water metro, said that the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has assigned it the task of conducting a feasibility study to assess the potential for similar water metro systems in diverse regions. "With the recent approval of its Board of Directors to form a consultancy wing, KMRL has formed an in-house committee to lead the initial work. Metro's first six-coach train for Phase-IV operation reaches Delhi: DMRC

The first six-coach train for Delhi Metro's Phase-IV expansion arrived here on Friday, a statement said. The train set, manufactured by Alstom at its facility in Sricity near Chennai, was inaugurated on September 23 in the presence of Delhi Metro Railway Cooperation (DMRC) and Alstom delegates, the statement said. It has now been stationed at Delhi Metro's Mukundpur depot, where it will undergo a number of tests required for its statutory certification for revenue service as a part of established rules and protocols, it said. Under the RS-17 contract, DMRC will be receive a total of 312 metro coaches (52 trains) for the Phase-IV priority corridors, i.e. Majlis Park to Maujpur, Janakpuri West to R K Ashram Marg and Tughlakabad to Delhi Aerocity. These trains will arrive in Delhi in phases over the coming days, it said. Delhi Metro hits record ridership; extra trains added on Fridays, Saturdays

Delhi Metro has recorded 13 of its highest passenger journeys in the past one month, with daily commuters ranging from over 72 lakh to 78 lakh, according to an official statement issued here on Friday. In response to the increased ridership, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to run one extra train on all its lines on Fridays and Saturdays, officials said. "The passenger journeys registered by the Delhi Metro in the past four days have turned out to be among the top five journeys performed in the metro network, with the highest ever passenger journeys record made on August 20 at 77,49,682," DMRC's Principal Executive Director (Corporate Communication) Anuj Dayal, said. "In view of the increased passenger journeys, the DMRC has decided to run one extra train on all its Lines performing 84 extra train trips on Friday and Saturday. These additional trains/trips will be continued on coming weekdays also, if required," he said. This trend further strengthens the Delhi .

Kolkata metro rail sees highest passenger earnings in 13 years on Sep 2

Metro Railway has earned more than Rs. 1.33 crore from passengers on September 2, which is the highest passenger earnings in the last 13 years, the authorities said on Tuesday. This is the second highest ever earnings in the history of Kolkata Metro in a day from passenger fare after August 1, 2011. On that day 13 years ago, it had earned over Rs 1.47 crore from passenger fares on a single day. The underground Metro service began its operation in the city in 1984 in a section of what is now known as the Blue Line. Later, it was expanded over the years. On September 2, an estimated 7.5 lakh passengers travelled in the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-New Garia), Green Line-1 (Sector Five-Sealdah), Green Line-2 (Howrah Maidan-Esplanade), Purple Line (Joka-Majerhat) and Orange Line (New Garia-Ruby More). More than 6.3 lakh passengers travelled on the Blue Line on that day, while 56,000-odd passengers travelled on Green Line-2. Around 51,500 people travelled in the Green Line-1 on Monday. M

Delhi Metro records highest-ever daily ridership of 7.748 mn on Aug 20

The Delhi Metro on August 20 registered the highest-ever count of daily passenger journeys at 77.48 lakh, officials said. The urban transporter shared the data in a post on X on Wednesday, saying it has surpassed its previous milestone accomplished on August 13 this year. A total of 77,48,838 passengers travelled on August 20. The count of daily passenger journeys in the Delhi Metro stood at 72.38 lakh on August 13, 71.09 lakh on February 13, 71.07 lakh on August 12, 71.04 lakh on September 4, 2023 and 70.88 lakh on February 12, the data showed. Journey or line utilisation is calculated by the number of corridors passengers use to reach their destinations. On August 20, the Delhi Metro achieved yet another milestone of highest ever passenger journeys being performed during the day.
