Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Saturday said 700 km of new metro lines have been made operational in the last 10 years, taking the total track length to 945 km. Metro services are now in 21 cities of the country, the housing and urban affairs minister said and added that prior to 2014, the service was operational in only five cities. The Delhi Metro on August 13 registered the highest-ever count of daily passenger journeys at 72.38 lakh, officials said. The urban transporter shared the data in a post on X on Wednesday, saying it has surpassed its previous milestone accomplished in February this year. A total of 72,38,271 passengers travelled on August 13. The count of daily passenger journeys in the Delhi Metro had stood at 71.09 lakh on February 13, 71.07 lakh on August 12, 71.04 lakh on September 4, 2023, and 70.88 lakh on February 12, the data showed. Journey or line utilisation is calculated by the number of corridors passengers use to reach their destinations. More than 50 per cent work is complete on all three priority corridors under Delhi Metro's fourth phase expansion project, the DMRC said on Sunday. A target of 2026 has been set for operationalising the new 65-kilometre network, it added. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) officials said the Phase 4 expansion project is progressing rapidly with a target of opening all three priority corridors comprising 65 kilometres of new lines by 2026. Though work on the fourth phase expansion project started in December 2019, progress was significantly impacted from 2020 to 2022 due to the Covid pandemic and delays in getting permissions to cut trees, they said. Metro Railway will run 214 trains on June 17 on the occasion of Eid-Ul-Zuha in the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-New Garia) stretch, an official statement said on Saturday. On a normal day, the Metro Railway runs 288 trains. But as Monday is a holiday due to Eid-Ul-Zuha so 214 trains will run on that day, it said. The Centre has cleared a Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs-DDA proposal for the construction of the Rithala-Narela-Kundli metro corridor, a Raj Niwas statement said on Saturday. Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena had taken up the construction of this metro corridor with the Centre on various occasions, it said. The Rithala-Narela-Kundli metro corridor will be constructed at a cost of Rs 6,231 crore with the Delhi portion estimated to cost Rs 5,685.22 crore and the Haryana portion Rs 545.77 crore, the statement said. This corridor is planned as an extension of the existing Red Line. Nearly 40 per cent of the cost of the Delhi portion will be borne by the central government. There will be some changes in the last and first train timings on Sunday and Monday respectively in view of the ongoing work on a 490-metre section of Janakpuri West to R K Ashram corridor of Phase-IV of Delhi Metro's Yellow Line, officials said on Saturday. With this, Kolkata Metro has been able to register itself as one of the frontrunners among all railway zones in the country, it said in a statement. "Metro Railway, Kolkata has earned Rs 2.72 crore in April 2024 as non-fare revenue," it said, adding that the figure was Rs 1.97 in the same period last year. Kolkata Metro has been focusing on generating revenues through branding of litter bins at stations, displaying ads inside and outside trains, putting up hoardings in open spaces and installing health check-up kiosks at different stations, a spokesperson said. Commercial operation on the stretch started on Friday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on March 6. The number of passengers on the first day in this 4.8-km underground stretch between Howrah Maidan and Esplanade was 70,204, the official said. He said that out of these, 23,444 persons boarded at Howrah Maidan, while 20,923 passengers boarded at Howrah, which is the deepest metro station in India.
