Heavy rains in Goa cause waterlogging, traffic woes; IMD issues red alert

Heavy rains lashed parts of Goa for the fourth day in a row on Tuesday, which led to waterlogging in low-lying areas and traffic congestion in state capital Panaji and other cities. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red alert' for Goa on Tuesday, saying heavy to very heavy rainfall was very likely at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places with strong surface winds over North Goa and South Goa districts. Continuous rain with short intense spells and winds gusting to 50 kmph are very likely in the coastal state, as per the IMD. Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea during the 'red alert', while people have been asked to avoid visiting flood-prone areas. On Tuesday, several low-lying areas remained flooded, throwing normal life out of gear in parts of Goa. Traffic congestion was reported in all major cities, including Panaji, Margao, Ponda and Vasco. Heavy rainfall across nation in July bridges June's monsoon deficit: IMD

Heavy rainfall across large parts of India has compensated for the June deficit, bringing the overall monsoon precipitation into the surplus category. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), more spells of heavy to very heavy rain are likely over northwest India and the western parts of the peninsular India during the next two-three days and over the northeast during the next five days. India, the world's top producer of critical crops such as rice, wheat and sugarcane, logged a rainfall deficit of 11 percent in June, with northwest India recording a shortfall of 33 per cent. Heavy rain in the first week of July compensated for the shortfall but caused flooding in many northeastern states. Since the four-month monsoon season began on June 1, the country has received 214.9 mm of rainfall against a normal of 213.3 mm, according to IMD data. Northwest India and the southern peninsula have recorded 3 per cent and 13 per cent above-normal rainfall, respectively. The he

India could experience above-normal rainfall in July, says IMD chief

India recorded below-normal rainfall in June, with the deficit standing at 11 per cent, the highest in five years, the India Meteorological Department said on Monday. According to the IMD data, the country received 147.2 mm of rainfall against a normal of 165.3 mm for the month, the seventh lowest since 2001. June rainfall accounts for 15 per cent of the total precipitation of 87 cm recorded during the four-month monsoon season in the country. After making an early onset over Kerala and the northeastern region on May 30, and progressing normally up to Maharashtra, the monsoon lost momentum, extending the wait for rains in West Bengal, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, and worsening the impact of a scorching heat wave in northwest India. "The country recorded 16 days of below-normal rainfall activity -- from June 11 to June 27 -- which led to overall below-normal precipitation," IMD chief Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said. Weather models 'fail' to predict Delhi rains; meteorologists surprised

Forecasting models "failed" to predict the extreme weather event that took Delhi residents by surprise early Friday, resulting in a record 228.1 mm of rainfall, meteorologists said. This amount is more than three times the June average of 74.1 mm and the highest for the month since 1936. An IMD official explained that the monsoon winds interacted with the remnants of a western disturbance, causing heavy rains in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Independent scientists suggested that a thunderstorm over North Delhi could have triggered the torrential rains. On June 26, the IMD had predicted only light to moderate rain and thunderstorms with gusty winds for Friday (June 28). On Thursday afternoon, the Met office noted that a trough extended from a cyclonic circulation over central Gujarat to west Bihar in the lower tropospheric levels. In the weekly weather briefing uploaded on the IMD's YouTube page, scientist Soma Sen Roy said this trough was pumping moisture into n
