Tiger count in Maharashtra up at 444 from 101 in 2000, says forest minister

Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik on Wednesday said the state's tiger count has gone up to 444 this year from 101 in 2000, and the government has approved funds of Rs 200 crore for solar fencing of villages near tiger habitats. Naik was replying to a debate in the state assembly on the issue of man-animal conflicts in a wildlife sanctuary near Bhandara. The minister said two persons were killed in the area in tiger attacks this year. Naik assured the House that he would pursue the demand for fencing of villages which are close to forests and fall on the route of tiger movement. "The number of tigers in the state has gone up to 444 now compared to 101 in 2000," he told the House. Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar said there was anger among locals over tiger attacks. Farmers were living in fear as tigers and leopards destroy crops as well, he said. Accused shot videos, clicked pics while torturing Beed sarpanch: Police

As sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh was tortured and killed in December 2024, the assailants recorded 15 videos, clicked eight photos and even made two video calls, police have said in a chargesheet, documenting the brutality endured by the victim. The videos and the photos are part of the chargesheet submitted by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) before a court in central Maharashtra's Beed district last week. Deshmukh, sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, was abducted and killed in December for attempting to foil an extortion bid on an energy company. His body, riddled with injuries and bearing signs of extreme brutality, was found dumped on the roadside. Seven men, including Walmik Karad, who is a close aide of state minister Dhananjay Munde, have been arrested so far, while one person has been declared wanted accused. The videos were shot on a smartphone of one of the accused, Mahesh Kedar, and their duration ranges between 2 seconds and 2.04 minutes, an official said

Railway's 2-day block for CSMT platform extension to affect several trains

Central Railway on Thursday announced a two-day special mega block from Friday night to carry out extension of a platforms at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) to accommodate 24-coach trains. Many suburban and long distance will be affected by this work, an official said. "The special block is planned for pre and post non-interlocking works and will be carried out in two phases of 5 hours and 10 hours from Friday night onwards. The first phase will start from Friday night at 11.30 pm and end on Saturday at 4.30 am. The 10-hour phase will be from 11:15pm on Saturday to 9:15am on Sunday," said CR chief public relations officer Swapnil Nila. The special block is necessary to extend platforms 12 and 13 to accommodate 24-coach trains, enhancing capacity and improving passenger convenience, he added. Two Iranian warships are currently on a goodwill and training visit to Mumbai, in a step towards enhanced cooperation in the maritime domain and strengthening mutual friendship, the Indian Navy said on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the Mission Commander and the Commanding Officers of the two ships, IRIS Boushehr and IRIS Lavan, called on Rear Admiral Vidyadhar Harke, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) at Headquarters Western Naval Command. Their discussions focused on mutual interests and the training curricula of both navies. The flotilla, carrying nearly 220 officer cadets, is on a training mission in the Indian Ocean. Hit-and-run cases made up 38% of Mumbai's road crashes in 2023: Report

Hit-and-run incidents accounted for 38 per cent of all the fatal crashes on Mumbai roads in 2023, and majority of the victims, at 54 per cent, were pedestrians, as per a report published by the city traffic police. Occupants of the two and three-wheeler vehicles and pedestrians were majority of the victims in the road crash deaths here in 2023, an official on Sunday said quoting the data. Mumbai reported 374 deaths in 351 road crashes in 2023, marking a 39 per cent decrease since 2015, as per the report which comprised an in-depth analysis of the accidents data of that year. Among those deaths, two and three-wheeler occupants comprised 48 per cent and pedestrians 40 per cent, said the report published recently by the Mumbai Traffic Police in association of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety. Males continued to account for most of the deaths at 82 per cent, with those in the 20-39 years age group making up the largest number of fatalities among the males
