The Supreme Court has upheld the acquittal of alleged members of the banned Jammu and Kashmir Students Liberation Front (JKSLF) in the sensational 1990 kidnapping and murder case of the then Kashmir University Vice Chancellor, Mushir-ul-Haq, and his personal secretary. A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan dismissed the appeals filed by the CBI challenging the acquittal of seven persons in the case registered under the now-repealed Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, 1987 (TADA). The court criticised the handling of the case, saying procedural safeguards were given a "complete go-bye" and truth and justice remained elusive, both for the accused and the victims. The top court said the legislature had reposed great faith in the fairness and uprightness of the higher police officials in the rank of SP and above while conferring the drastic power of recording confessional statements of the accused upon them making the same admissible in evidence subject to t

Lawyers are set to deliver their closing arguments Friday in the trial of a New Jersey man charged with trying to kill Salman Rushdie on a New York lecture stage in a knife attack that left the author blind in one eye and with other serious injuries. Hadi Matar, 27, is charged with attempted murder and assault in the August 2022 attack at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Rushdie, 77, was the key witness during testimony that began last week. The Booker Prize-winning author told jurors he thought he was dying when a masked stranger ran onto the stage and stabbed and slashed at him until being tackled by bystanders. Rushdie showed jurors his now-blinded right eye, usually hidden behind a darkened eyeglass lens. Jurors also heard from a trauma surgeon who said Rushdie's injuries would have been fatal without quick treatment, and a law enforcement officer who said Matar was calm and cooperative in his custody. The only suspect ever to be charged in the 1990s killing of rap icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas has lost a bid to have his murder case dismissed. Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny said in a decision issued Tuesday that Duane Keffe D Davis had provided no proof of any immunity deals and that the state of Nevada has never offered him a deal. Davis and his lawyer had argued that he never should have been charged with murder because of immunity agreements he says he reached years ago with federal and local authorities. Attorney Carl Arnold said the indictment against his 61-year-old client is an egregious violation of his constitutional rights because of a 27-year delay in prosecution. Arnold said after the hearing that they will decide in the coming days if they will appeal the judge's decision to the state Supreme Court. Prosecutors said Davis has provided no proof that he was granted immunity by authorities who interviewed him in 1998 and in the early 2000s while he was
