India is a vibrant democracy, go to Delhi and see for yourself: White House

India is a vibrant democracy and anybody who happens to go to New Delhi can see that for themselves, the White House said Monday, as it appeared to dismiss concerns about the health of democracy in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be on a state visit to the US later this month. "India is a vibrant democracy. Anybody that, you know, happens to go to New Delhi can see that for themselves. And certainly, I would expect that strength and health of democratic institutions will be part of the discussion," John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council in the White House, told reporters at a news conference here. "Look, we never shy away. And you can do that with friends. You're supposed to do that with friends. You never shy away from expressing concerns that we might have with anyone around the world. But this (State) visit is really about advancing what is now and what we hope will be a deeper, stronger partnership and friendship going ...

PM Modi's schemes important for self-reliance of poor: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday said every scheme of the Narendra Modi government is important for the self-reliance of the poor, as he lauded the PM SVANidhi scheme under which street vendors are granted bank loans. "Before 2014, the poor did not have bank accounts. Today more than 48 crore poor people have bank accounts in the country and the money from the centre directly goes to their accounts," the CM said. On the completion of three years of the Street Vendors Self-Reliant Fund (PM SVANidhi) scheme on Monday, the CM inaugurated the 'SVANidhi Mahotsav' and a campaign to spread word about it. He said before they had bank accounts, the poor were forced to bribe officials, but now all their state benefits get credited directly into their account. "You also get interest on your deposits." "A total of 54 lakh people across UP with more than 17.60 lakh poor people in urban areas were given houses. In urban areas of Gorakhpur, more than 36,000 have benefitted f

India, US finalise roadmap for fast-tracking defence technology transfer

India and the US on Monday concluded an ambitious roadmap for defence industrial cooperation to fast-track technology tie-ups and co-production of military platforms such as air combat and land systems, a move that comes in the wake of China's increasingly aggressive behaviour in the Indo-Pacific region. The new framework for cooperation was finalised during talks between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and his visiting American counterpart Lloyd Austin, two weeks ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's state visit to Washington. Singh and Austin also decided to initiate negotiations on a framework for the security of supply arrangement and a reciprocal defence procurement agreement, which will promote long-term supply chain stability. The US defence secretary said the US-India cooperation matters "because we all face a rapidly changing world. We see bullying and coercion from the People's Republic of China and Russian aggression against Ukraine that seeks to redraw borders and ...

CBI meant to investigate crimes, not railway accidents: Kharge to PM Modi

A day after the Railways sought a CBI probe into the Odisha train tragedy, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the probe agency is meant to investigate crimes, not railway accidents, and cannot fix accountability for technical, institutional and political failures. Kharge also said "all the empty safety claims" of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw have now been "exposed" and the government must bring to light the real reasons that caused this grave accident, which he described as one of the worst in Indian history. In his four-page letter to Modi, the Congress chief said there is serious concern among the common passengers about the deterioration in safety of railways and therefore, it is incumbent upon the government to ascertain and bring to light the real reasons that caused this grave accident. He alleged that instead of focusing on strengthening the railways at the basic level only "superficial touch up is being done to

India moving ahead with clear roadmap on environment, climate change: PM

India is moving ahead with a clear roadmap for environment protection and climate change, while maintaining a balance between present requirements and future vision, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday. Speaking on the occasion of the World Environment Day, he said if India has expanded its 4G and 5G telecom networks, it has also enhanced its forest cover on an equal footing. "The theme of this year's World Environment Day is to get rid of single-use plastic, an issue about which the world is talking today but India has been working on it consistently for the last four-five years. "In 2018 itself, India started working at two levels for getting rid of single-use plastic. On one hand, we banned single-use plastic and on the other hand we made the plastic waste processing mandatory," he said. He said India is focussing on environment in a big way just like any other area for its growth. "On the one hand, we have provided help to the poor and on the other hand we have also ta

Modi govt made it easier for global tech firms in India: DocuSign prez

It is a lot easier now for global companies, especially in technology zones, to establish a footprint in India compared to a decade ago due to the Modi government's big focus on attracting the FDI from tech companies, according to the newly-appointed Indian-American president of a US firm that pioneers in managing electronic agreements. The remarks by Robert Chatwani, president & general manager, Growth at DocuSign came as he spoke about the adoption of technology for governance and other areas in India. My understanding is that all of that legislation has come under Narendra Modi's administration. I think it's just one indication of how technology and adopting technology, not only for the government but just at large, has really changed under Prime Minister Modi's leadership in the last several years, Chatwani told PTI in an interview. Encouraged by the changing technological environment, DocuSign, a San Francisco-based company that allows organisations to manage electronic ...

PM Modi driving Indian car looking into rear-view mirror: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP saying they never talk about the future, and always blame somebody else in the past for their failures. Gandhi, who is on a visit to the US, was addressing the members of Indian diaspora in the Javits Centre here. They observed 60-second silence in respect of those who died in the Odisha train accident. The accident involving three trains has left at least 280 dead and brought into focus the issue of railway safety. There has been demand for the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw from some quarters. "I remember a train accident when the Congress was in power. The Congress did not get up and say 'now it is the fault of the British that the train has crashed'. The Congress minister said 'it's my responsibility and I'm resigning'. So this is the problem we have back home, we make excuses and we are not accepting the reality we are faced with," Gandhi said, without naming the Congress ...

Odisha tragedy: Congress demands Railway Minister's resignation; slams PM

The Congress on Sunday demanded the resignation of Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw over the Odisha rail tragedy and attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he should accept part of the responsibility for creating an all is well facade even as the critical infrastructure of the Indian Railway "languishes in neglect". The Opposition party asked whether the prime minister will take responsibility for the "deadliest rail tragedy" of this century. It also asked who is responsible for ignoring the warnings and suggestions of experts, the parliamentary committee and CAG report. Accountability needs to be fixed from top to bottom: Kharge slams PM

In the wake of the Odisha rail tragedy, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was busy flagging off trains while not paying attention to railway safety. He called for fixing accountability of all posts from top to bottom to prevent such incidents in future. In a series of tweets, Kharge posed questions to the Modi government and alleged that "PR gimmicks" have made the working system of the dispensation "hollow". Noting that three lakh posts are vacant in Railways, he said posts at high levels whose recruitment is through the Prime Minister's Office are also lying vacant. He asked why these posts were not filled in the last nine years. The Railway Board itself has recently admitted that long working hours of loco pilots due to acute shortage of manpower is the main reason for the increasing number of accidents, the Congress president said and asked why the posts were not filled up. Kharge claimed that the Principal Chief Operatin

Arunchal Pradesh witnessed major development push under Modi govt: DyCM

Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Sunday said the border state witnessed massive development in the past nine years after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over as the prime minister of the country in 2014. The Modi government is raising the northeast region by constructing world-class infrastructure, Mein told reporters here as part of BJP's month-long 'Maha Jan Sampark Abhiyan' which was launched by party President J P Nadda on May 31. "Modi conceptualised six development pillars for northeast including roadways, waterways, airways, railways, digital connectivity and hydropower development," he said, adding that the state government is also working based on these pillars. Highlighting the success story of the nine years of the Modi government at the Centre and seven years of the Pema Khandu government in the state, Mein said that the prime minister always insisted on the development of the northeast, without which the country cannot progress.
