Gadkari unveils projects worth ₹4K cr, says Odisha to get US-like highways

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said Odisha will soon get America-like highways. Unveiling 19 national highway projects worth Rs 4,137 crore in the state, he said road connectivity will boost tourism in the state. "The Centre will provide world-class infrastructure to Odisha, and the people here will soon get America-like highways. The state has ports, minerals and forests. Road connectivity will boost its tourism potential," he said. Noting that the Centre has undertaken highway projects worth nearly Rs 2 lakh crore in the state, Gadkari said projects worth Rs 60,000 crore have already been completed. Works for projects worth Rs 60,000 crore are underway, while projects worth Rs 75,000 crore are in the pipeline, he said. NH 10 to remain closed between Sevoke-Rangpo on Apr 18-19 for repairs

The National Highway 10 will be intermittently closed for repairs on April 18 and 19 between Sevoke in West Bengal and Rangpo in Sikkim, an official order said on Thursday. The NH-10 connects Siliguri in West Bengal to Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim. It is a critical route for connecting Sikkim to the rest of the country. The distance between Sevoke and Rangpo is around 53 km. The order issued by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) said the highway will be closed for all types of vehicles between Sevoke and Rangpo from 0300 hours to 0600 hours, 0700 to 0800, 0900-1000, 1100-1200, 1300-1400,1500-1600 and 1700 to 1800 hours on both the days. During this period, the movement of heavy vehicles will be prohibited from 3 am to 6 pm on both days. National Highways toll collection: UP tops list with Rs 7,060 cr revenue

Uttar Pradesh topped the list of states that reported high revenue collection through toll on National Highways in the April-February period of financial year 2024-25, Parliament was informed on Wednesday. Union Road Transport and Highways minister Nitin Gadkari in a written reply to Rajya Sabha said the government collected highest toll on National Highways crossing Uttar Pradesh at Rs 7,060 crore, followed by Rajasthan at Rs 5,967.13 crore and Maharashtra at Rs 5,115.38 crore up to February 2025. Gadkari further noted that the government has also decided to implement barrier free Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) System with available technology and use of existing fee plaza infrastructure at selected sections of National Highways. NHAI hikes toll charges by 4-5% on highway sections across country

Commuters on national highways and expressways will need to pay more for their road journeys, as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has increased toll charges by an average of 4 to 5 per cent on highway sections across the country. The revised toll charges for motorists on national highways across the country have come into effect from Tuesday, a senior highways ministry official told PTI. NHAI notifies toll rate hikes for all the national highways and expressways separately. According to him, the change in toll fee is part of an annual exercise to revise the rates that are linked to the changes in the wholesale price index-based inflation. Every year, it is implemented from April 1. There are around 855 user fee plazas on the national highway network on which user fee is levied as per National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. NHAI prepays Rs 56,000 cr to lenders in FY25 to save Rs 1,200 cr interest

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has pre-paid loans of worth Rs 56,000 crore during the current fiscal, helping the state-owned agency to save interest cost of around Rs 1,200 crore, a senior government official said on Sunday. The official told PTI that NHAI's total debt at the beginning of the current fiscal year was pegged at Rs 3.35 lakh crore, which stood at about Rs 2.76 lakh crore at the end of third quarter of 2024-25 fiscal year. He further said that around Rs 15,700 crore has been pre-paid from the InvIT monetisation proceeds, while Rs 40,000 crore prepayment of loan has been made to National Small Saving Fund (Rs 30,000 crore) and State Bank of India (Rs 10,000 crore), which charge high interest rates. "NHAI is successfully reducing its debt liability," the official added. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in her last year's budget had retained the allocation to NHAI at Rs 1.68 lakh crore for 2024-25.

Snowfall in Himachal Pradesh shuts 226 roads, including 3 highways

A total of 226 roads, including three national highways, were closed in Himachal Pradesh following snowfall in several districts, officials said on Wednesday. People shivered under piercing cold wave conditions as minimum temperatures dropped by a few notches in Jot, which received 10 cm of snow in the past 24 hours, followed by Khadrala (5 cm), Pooh (2 cm), Sangla (1.2 cm) and Keylong (1 cm). Tabo in the Lahaul and Spiti district was the coldest place in Himachal Pradesh, recording a night temperature of minus 10.6 degrees Celsius. A total of 226 roads, including three national highways including Attari and Leh, Sanj to Aut in Kullu district, Khab Sangam in Kinnaur district, and Gramphoo in Lahaul and Spiti district were closed for traffic, officials said. The Himachal Pradesh government has sent a proposal to the Centre seeking approval for five new national highways in the state, Public Works and Urban Development Minister Vikramaditya Singh said on Friday. Addressing a press conference here after holding a review meeting of his department, Singh said the construction of these proposed national highways will accelerate development in the hill state. Landslide hits Badrinath National Highway in U'khand, movement affected

Traffic between Gauchar and Karnaprayag on Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand was disrupted due to repeated landslides in the region, an official said on Tuesday. The district magistrate said that around 250-300 vehicles are stuck in Karnaprayag while around 200 vehicles are stuck in Gauchar. The administration is making arrangements for food and accommodation for the passengers stuck in traffic since Monday. He said that arrangements have also been made by the local administration in Chattwapipal while langars are being run by the municipalities of Karnaprayag and Gauchar.
