HC seeks NIA's stand on Hurriyat leader's challenge to framing of charges

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought the stand of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Kashmiri separatist leader Nayeem Khan's challenge to the framing of charges against him in an alleged terror funding case. A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and Talwant Singh issued notice to the NIA on the petition and listed it for hearing on August 3. A trial court had last year framed charges against Khan and others in the case related to alleged terrorist and secessionist activities that disturbed the Valley in 2017. Hurriyat Conference leader Khan was arrested on July 24, 2017 and is currently in judicial custody. The high court had issued a notice on Khan's bail plea in the matter earlier this year. The trial court had ordered framing of charges against Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Saeed, Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin, Kashmiri separatist leaders, including Yasin Malik, Shabbir Shah, Masarat Alam and others, under various sections of the anti-terror law UAPA

Credible inputs must be behind NIA raids against PFI in Goa: CM Sawant

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday confirmed the raids by the National Investigation Agency in Goa against those having alleged connections with Popular Front of India (PFI). NIA on Tuesday conducted several raids across the nation, including the coastal state, in connection with the banned outfit. I learnt about the raid through media but now it is confirmed, said Sawant, who also holds the home portfolio. He said that if the raids are conducted by the NIA, it means that the federal agency must have got credible information about the persons' links with PFI. If there are still contacts of PFI in Goa then they must be raided, he said, in an apparent reference to the action against the sympathisers of the banned outfit by local police earlier this year. Last month, the Sawant had told Goa Legislative Assembly that 32 PFI activists had been arrested by the state police.

NIA to probe protest, vandalism attempt at Indian High Commission in London

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe the case of protests and attempt to vandalise the Indian High Commission in London last month, officials said on Tuesday. The NIA will take over the case from the special cell of the Delhi Police which had registered a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act as it involves unlawful activities carried out by certain people holding Indian nationality abroad. According to officials, the NIA is mandated to probe any terror case that takes place in foreign land following amendments to the law governing the anti-terror probe organisation in 2019. Pro-Khalistani protestors tried to vandalise the Indian High Commission in London and pulled down the national flag while holding protests outside the High Commission complex on March 19. It happened a day after the Punjab Police launched a crackdown against radical preacher Amritpal Singh in Punjab. The Counter-Terrorism and Counte

Antilia bomb case: NIA declines support to former cop's plea seeking pardon

The National Investigation Agency on Thursday opposed the plea of former policeman Sunil Mane seeking to turn approver in the case pertaining to the recovery of an explosives-laden SUV outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani's residence and the subsequent murder of Mansukh Hiran. The federal agency in its written response filed before the special NIA court here said it is crystal clear that the applicant (Mane) is directly involved in the crime of this case along with the co-accused and it cannot support his plea. In a handwritten application sent to the court last month, Mane said that he had realised his mistake and that the court should consider his outstanding service record and give him a chance to repent his mistake by granting pardon. Mane was arrested by the NIA in April 2021 and is currently in judicial custody. The NIA has claimed Mane was part of the conspiracy to kill Thane-based businessman Hiran, who purportedly owned the explosives-laden vehicle that was found parked nea
