Japan, UK hail deeper defence ties as Royal Navy carrier docks in Tokyo

Defence ministers from Japan and Britain hailed their deep strategic alignment on Thursday as a Royal Navy aircraft carrier made a historic port call in Tokyo. The HMS Prince of Wales, which heads a 12-nation carrier strike group of 4,000 service members on an eight-month deployment in the region, is the first foreign aircraft carrier to visit the city, UK Defence Secretary John Healey told a joint news conference. We are proud to be taking our air and our naval cooperation now to new levels, Healey said after holding talks at Japan's Defence Ministry with his counterpart, Gen Nakatani. The strategic cooperation with Japan is part of the UK's commitment to be more engaged in the economy and security in the Indo-Pacific. Japan and the UK are the closest security partners in Asia and Europe and we have steadily enhanced cooperation, Nakatani said. I'm extremely happy to share this historic moment when Japan-UK defence cooperation has reached a new level." The two countries are invol

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is scheduled to preside over the commissioning of two multi-mission stealth frigates, Udaygiri and Himgiri, at the Eastern Naval Command here by the Indian Navy on Tuesday. This development underscores the growing maritime importance of India's eastern seaboard. Two state-of-the-art combatant platforms join the Indian Navy fleet, fortifying India's strength at sea. RM Rajnath Singh (Defence Minister) will preside over this momentous commission ceremony, said the Indian Navy in a post on X late on Monday. Naval exercise between Pak, Sri Lanka shelved following India's concerns

A plan to hold a military exercise between the navies of Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the strategic waters of Trincomalee was shelved weeks back after New Delhi conveyed its concerns to Colombo over the proposed drills, multiple sources have said. Trincomalee is situated on Sri Lanka's northeastern coast and is considered a significant hub in the Indian Ocean region, especially for India's maritime security interests. The sources said the navies of the two countries planned to carry out the exercise off Trincomalee in line with their regular engagements. The plan did not go through after India apprised its apprehensions over the planned exercise to the Sri Lankan side, they told PTI. The navies of Pakistan and Sri Lanka are known to have cordial relations and warships from both countries visit each other's ports regularly, besides carrying out wargames. There was no official word on the plan either from Sri Lanka or from Pakistan. Military experts, explaining Trincomalee's strategic

Navy's R-Day tableau showcases 3 newly commissioned frontline combatants

The Indian Navy's tableau at the 76th Republic Day parade showcased its three newly commissioned frontline combatants -- warships INS Surat and INS Nilgiri, and submarine INS Vaghsheer. The three platforms commissioned in Mumbai on January 15, symbolises India's naval prowess and the spirit of 'Atmanirbharta' (self-reliance). A mixed marching contingent and a band from the Navy participated in the ceremonial parade. The average age of the members in the contingent is 25 years. These personnel have been carefully handpicked from all branches of the Indian Navy and have undergone specialised training of over two months for the event, officials earlier said. The commissioning of three major naval combatants marks a significant leap forward in realising India's vision of becoming a global leader in defence manufacturing and maritime security, the Defence Ministry had said earlier. INS Surat, the fourth and final ship of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project, ranks among the larges

Taiwan demonstrates sea defences against potential Chinese attack

Taiwan on Thursday demonstrated its sea defences against a potential Chinese attack as tensions rise with Beijing, part of a multitiered strategy to deter an invasion from the mainland. The island's navy highlighted its Kuang Hua VI fast attack missile boats and Tuo Chiang-class corvettes in waters near Taiwan's largest port of Kaohsiung, a major hub for international trade considered key to resupplying Chinese forces should they establish a beachhead on the island. The Kuang Hua VI boats, with a crew of 19, carry indigenously developed Hsiung Feng II anti-ship missiles and displayed their ability to take to the sea in an emergency to intercept enemy ships about to cross the 44-kilometer (24-nautical mile) limit of Taiwan's contiguous zone, within which governments are permitted to take defensive action. China routinely sends ships and planes to challenge Taiwan's willingness and ability to counter intruders, prompting Taiwan to scramble jets, activate missile systems and dispatch .

Adani Defence delivers 2nd Drishti-10 Starliner surveillance drone to Navy

Adani Defence and Aerospace has delivered a second Drishti-10 Starliner surveillance drone to the Indian Navy, boosting India's maritime forces' capabilities to monitor shipping lines and mitigate piracy risks. Following the handover of the first Drishti-10 to the Indian Navy earlier this year, the induction of the second unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), a version of the Israel's Hermes 900 medium-altitude long-endurance UAV, into naval maritime operations was initiated at Porbandar in Gujarat, sources aware of the matter said. Drishti 10 Starliner drone, manufactured by Adani Defence and Aerospace, a part of the conglomerate helmed by billionaire Gautam Adani, at its Hyderabad facility, is an advanced intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) platform with 36 hours endurance and 450 kg payload capacity. The only all-weather military platform, with NATO's STANAG 4671 (standardized agreement 4671) certification for the UAV system's airworthiness, is cleared to fly in both .

Crew mistakes led to sinking of New Zealand navy ship off Samoa: Enquiry

Mistakes by members of the crew caused a New Zealand navy ship to plow into a reef off the coast of Samoa, where it caught fire and sank, according to the preliminary findings of a military Court of Inquiry released Friday. The ship's crew did not realise autopilot was engaged, believed something else had gone wrong with the ship, and did not check the HMNZS Manawanui was under manual control as it maintained course toward land, a summary of the inquiry's first report said. The full report has not been made public. All 75 people on board the vessel evacuated safely as the boat foundered about 1.6 kilometers (a mile) off the coast of Upolu, Samoa, in October. The ship was one of only nine in New Zealand's navy and was the first the country lost at sea since World War II. Officials did not know the cause of the sinking at the time, and Chief of Navy Rear Admiral Garin Golding ordered a Court of Inquiry to investigate. The direct cause of the grounding has been determined as a series

Not easy to come to any kind of settlement: Navy VC on India-China LaC pact

Navy Vice Chief Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan on Tuesday said the naval force was happy to learn about India and China reaching an agreement on patrolling along the LAC in eastern Ladakh as he underlined that in national security issues, it is "not easy" to come to any kind of a settlement. He said this during a media interaction held at Kota House ahead of the third edition of Navy's flagship seminar Swavlamban. His remarks came a day after India announced that it has reached an agreement with China on patrolling along the LAC in eastern Ladakh. "In national security issues, it is not easy to come to any kind of a settlement. It's not easy, because there are views, there are perceptions, there are emotive issues. There are land issues and there are national security considerations. So, at one time you address several elements of national consciousness. You go and talk, negotiate," Vice Admiral Swaminathan said. "So, if you come to any kind of settlement, I don't know what the .
