Toning up organisation in poll-bound states, NDA expansion on BJP's agenda

Senior BJP leaders have been brainstorming over organisational matters as the party looks to inject a sense of cohesion and purpose in poll-bound states like Madhya Pradesh and Telangana where factionalism has become an issue. Another issue on the party's agenda is the expansion of the ruling National Democratic Alliance, which has seen steady depletion in the recent years with traditional BJP allies like the Janata Dal (United) and Akali Dal leaving the grouping. The recent meeting between Telugu Desam Party, which had left the NDA in 2018, supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah has sparked buzz about the revival of ties, something the Andhra Pradesh leader has been pursuing assiduously. An "expanded" NDA may meet soon, a BJP leader said. But it remains to be seen if the BJP will formally join hands with the TDP as it has also had good equations with the state's Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy. An alliance between the two parties may push Reddy's YSR Congress int

Merging railway budget with Union budget 'major blunder' of NDA govt: Moily

In the wake of the Odisha railway tragedy, senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily on Tuesday said the clubbing of the railway budget with the Union budget in 2017 was a "major blunder" of the NDA government and called for bringing back the practice of having separate budgets. Taking a swipe at the government, Moily said they are talking of bullet trains when the basics have not been rectified nor sufficient modernisation and technology has been put in place. "The clubbing of Railway Budget with the Union Budget has lost the focus on the railways. It is a major blunder committed by the NDA government. Mere focus on high-speed trains without taking into account safety and modernisation is a step in haste. It is necessary to go back to the Railway Budget," the former Union minister said in a statement. He also demanded that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw should tender his resignation on moral grounds. Faster rail movement and vast network deserves sound operational ecosystem which

Oppn boycotting Parl inauguration blatant affront to democratic values: NDA

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance launched a sharp counterattack on Opposition parties for their decision to boycott the new Parliament building's inauguration, calling their stand a "blatant affront to democratic ethos and constitutional values of our great nation". In a statement, leaders of 14 parties of the ruling alliance also implored the opposition parties to reconsider their decision and said the people of India will not forget their "egregious insult to our democracy and to their elected representatives" if they go ahead with their stand. With Congress and several other parties claiming that the May 28 inauguration of the building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and not President Droupadi Murmu is an insult to the highest constitutional office, the NDA hit back. It recalled their opposition to her presidential bid as the NDA candidate and said their "disrespect" shown towards her is a new low in political discourse. "The staunch opposition to her candidature is not
