Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has written to his cabinet colleague Nitin Gadkari, urging him to take steps to expand an economic corridor connecting two national highways between Chhattishgarh's Raigarh and Odisha's Talcher to eight lanes to facilitate industrialisation in the region. In a letter to Gadkari, the Union road transport and highways minister, Pradhan said the corridor of approximately 300 km, starting from Raigarh in Chhattisgarh and extending up to Ballhar at Talcher, has the presence of three major industrial areas, and the expansion of the arterial roads is needed as economic activities are set to grow there. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Tuesday said national highway projects worth nearly Rs 3 lakh core have been sanctioned in the past 10 years, increasing the length of NH by 45 per cent in the region. Gadkari, however, also warned that the authorities are facing land acquisition problems in some of the NE states such as Nagaland and Meghalaya and projects could be closed if the issues are not resolved soon. Addressing a press conference after reviewing the progress of NH works in Assam, Gadkari said, "Projects worth Rs 2,89,425 have been given to NE in the last 10 years. These comprise upcoming, ongoing and completed projects. He said the length of national highways in the region has gone up from about 10,800 km in 2014 to 15,740 km now. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday said a cross-border road under the ambitious Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMTTP) to link south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district with Myanmar's Sittwe port will be completed by November this year. The government is working on a policy to ensure that there are no potholes on national highways by year-end and construction of roads on Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) mode is being preferred as such projects are maintained in a better manner, Union minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday. With an aim to make the national highways free of potholes by the end of December this year, the Road Transport and Highways Ministry is firming up performance-based maintenance and short-term maintenance contracts. Generally, road construction is done through three modes -- BOT, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), and Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). "The roads which are constructed under the EPC mode require maintenance quite early whereas under the BOT mode, roads are better constructed as the contractor knows that he will have to bear the cost of maintenance for the next 15-20 years.
