Delhi CM calls rain a wake-up call, blames AAP's 'development backlog'

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta termed the pre-monsoon showers on Friday a warning sign for the capital's crumbling infrastructure, blaming it on the "decade-long development backlog" created by the previous AAP government. Taking a dig at Arvind Kejriwal, she said the AAP chief was oblivious to the problems of waterlogging and broken trees as he would be busy with his "sound-proof" sleep in the "Sheesh Mahal" -- a term the BJP gave to the former chief minister's official residence accusing it of unnecessary opulence. Gupta who visited Majnu Ka Tila area following heavy rainfall in the city stressed the need for planned urban growth to prevent such recurring crises. The city was hit by waterlogging and traffic disruptions, many due to fallen trees due to the early morning rain and storm on Friday. A house collapse in Najafgarh killed a woman and her three children as many busy road stretches, including Minto Bridge and ITO, were waterlogged, causing heavy traffic jams. The chief

AAP slams BJP-led Delhi govt after rain causes waterlogging in Delhi

The Aam Aadmi Party targeted the BJP government in Delhi after heavy rains on Friday led to waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Leader of Opposition Atishi and AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj shared photos and videos of waterlogged roads on X. "Is this what the people of Delhi expected from the 4-engine BJP Govt?" wrote Atishi in a post that shared videos from waterlogging in Dhaula Kuan and ITO. The "4-engine BJP government" refers to governments at the Centre, in Delhi, the municipal corporation and the local MP. The AAP leader added that waterlogging outside the PWD in ITO office was symbolic of the government's failure. "First BJP failed in electricity, water and sewer. Now BJP has failed to stop waterlogging," the former CM said in Hindi. In a similar vein, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said the "reality of BJP's four-engine government" in Delhi has been exposed. "Roads and streets got flooded even in the first and normal rain. Excuses won't work, slogans won't work

Three people were killed and more than 100 rescued after heavy rain triggered flash floods at different places in Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district early on Sunday, officials said. The incessant rain also triggered landslides and mudslides at nearly a dozen places between Nashri and Banihal along the strategic Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, prompting traffic to be suspended, they said. The officials said a cloudburst struck the Seri Bagna village of Ramban, resulting in the deaths of three persons, including brothers Aqib Ahmad and Mohd Saqib. The rescue operation in the village was continuing when the last reports were received, they said. Rainfall, price hikes slow AC sales in April, industry eyes growth

Intermittent rainfall in south India and recent thunderstorms with moderate rain in some parts of north and eastern regions have slowed down the pace of sales of room air conditioners in April, but the industry is still expecting a double-digit growth with recent weather forecasts suggesting an intense summer. Manufacturers of room air conditioners (RAC), including Blue Star, Samsung, and Haier, are also going for a price increase of up to 5 per cent in April, extending the impact on raw material costs and currency exchange fluctuations amidst macroeconomic volatility. Besides, the room AC industry is still dependent on imports of crucial components such as compressors, PCBs, and fan motors, mainly from China, and is anxiously looking at the tariff standoff triggered by the Trump administration. Despite such odds, the RAC industry expects a double-digit growth in the June quarter, the season contributing a large chunk for sales of compressor-based cooling products, over the high bas

Emissions could be making rainfall more acidic over past 3 decades: Study

Air pollution could be making rainfall more acidic in cities such as Vishakhapatnam, Allahabad, Mohanbari (Assam), while dust from the Thar could be making rain more alkaline in Jodhpur, Pune and Srinagar, according to an analysis. The study by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, analysed the pH value -- which measures acidity or basicity -- of rainfall of ten cities in India. The data recorded at GAW stations from 1987 to 2021 were analysed. The findings are published by the IMD as a 'met monograph', a comprehensive analysis of a meteorological topic. The study suggests that atmospheric conditions and local emissions can affect the chemistry or pH of rainfall. Both acidic and alkaline rain can have toxic effects, affecting aquatic and plant life, even as the study's authors said "acid rain does not currently pose a major and immediate threat to our region". They attributed acidity in rain in Vizag to emissions
