No impunity: G7 vows tough, unified stance on Russia's war on Ukraine

Top diplomats from the Group of Seven wealthy democracies vowed a unified front against Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine, saying at the close of their meetings on Tuesday that they were committed to boosting and enforcing tough sanctions against Moscow. The G-7 communique laying out their commitments also included strong words meant to curb what the ministers see as increasing Chinese and North Korean aggressiveness in Northeast Asia. But it was Russia's invasion of Ukraine that highlighted the three-day summit in this hot spring resort town. There can be no impunity for war crimes and other atrocities such as Russia's attacks against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure, the ministers said. We remain committed to intensifying sanctions against Russia, coordinating and fully enforcing them, the communique said, and would support for as long as it takes" Ukraine as it defends itself. The foreign ministers' document was prepared as a template for global leaders to use

Russia questions US's code of conduct on export control, human rights

Russia on Saturday questioned America's code of conduct on export control regimes and human rights issues. At the recent 2nd summit for democracy, to which the US decided who to invite to, it pushed for the "Code of conduct for enhancing export control of goods and technology that could be misused and lead to serious violations or abuses of human rights," tweeted Denis Alipov, Russian Ambassador to India. On March 30, 2023, the United States and over twenty international partners adopted a nonbinding Code of Conduct outlining its commitment to using export control tools to address serious human rights concerns."In clear contradiction with the existing universal export control regimes and mechanisms of regulation. Would the Code be applicable to the US? Cannot shrug off the feeling it won't. A fresh lively touch to the "rules-based order" vs international order," tweeted Alipov.Although a non-binding document, the Export Controls and Human Rights Initiative (ECHRI) Code of Conduct ...

NATO member Finland breaks ground on Russia border fence near Imatra

The construction of barbed-wired fence along Finland's long border with Russia - primarily meant to curb illegal migration - has broken ground near the southeastern town of Imatra less than two weeks after the Nordic country joined NATO as the 31st member of the military alliance. The Finnish Border Guard on Friday showcased the building of the initial three kilometer (1.8 mile) stretch of the fence to be erected in Pelkola near a crossing point off Imatra, a quiet lakeside town of some 25,000 people. Finland's 1,340 kilometer (832 mile) border with Russia is the longest of any European Union member. Construction of the border fence is an initiative by the border guard that was approved by Prime Minister Sanna Marin's government amid wide political support last year. The main purpose of the three-meter (10-foot) high steel fence with a barbed-wire extension on top is to prevent illegal immigration from Russia and give reaction time to authorities, Finnish border officials say. Russian court fines Wikipedia again over article about Ukraine war

A Moscow court on Thursday again fined Wikipedia for a Russian-language article it refused to remove about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the latest in a series of government moves to silence objective reporting or criticism of the war and restrict the Russian public's access to information. The court fined Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit that runs the free, publicly-edited online encyclopedia, 2 million rubles ($24,464) for not removing a Wikipedia article titled Russian occupation of the Zaporizhzhia region," a reference to one of four Ukrainian provinces that Russia annexed last September. Most countries have condemned the annexation, as well as that by Russia in 2014 of Ukraine's Crimean Peninsula, as illegal. The state Tass news agency said the Wikimedia Foundation had failed to heed the demands of Russia's state communications watchdog Roskomnadzor to remove articles containing false information. Tass said a Wikipedia representative asked the court to reject the removal ...

US Treasury Dept imposes new sanctions on Russian oligarch, Hungary bank

The Treasury Department on Wednesday announced new sanctions aimed at Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, targeting the financial network of one of Russia's wealthiest businessmen. Usmanov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has been subject to U.S. and European Union sanctions since shortly after the Kremlin's invasion of Ukraine last year. The Treasury Department said the new designations, being coordinated with sanctions announced by the British government, aim to reinforce existing penalties and further disrupt Russia's importation of critical technologies used in its war against Ukraine. The action by the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control involves 25 individuals and 29 entities in 20 jurisdictions. As the Kremlin seeks ways around the expansive multilateral sanctions and export controls imposed on Russia for its war against Ukraine, the United States and our allies and partners will continue to disrupt evasion schemes that support Putin on the battlefield
