Captaincy is mentally exhausting, more than physically: Shubman Gill

India captain Shubman Gill has had a trial by fire in his debut series as captain with all three Tests against England lasting five days but more than the physical fatigue, he feels tired mentally. It has been a highly competitive series and the on-field tensions at Lord's have added to the intense rivalry. With India trailing 1-2 in the five-match rubber, Gill said he has enjoyed the leadership experience thoroughly but is hoping for more luck coming his way in the remaining two Tests. "Honestly physically, I would say it has been less tiring, mentally more tiring, because when you are there, as a player, you are just thinking about, you are waiting for something to happen, the ball to come to you, whereas when you are the captain, you are thinking most of the time, so you are involved more mentally. "I would say mentally it has been more tiring, physically it has actually been less tiring, than when you are actually the player," said Gill on Tuesday. We need to close the sessions

Shubman Gill faces real trial as India trail 1-2 in Tests, says Chappell

Former Australia captain Greg Chappell believes Shubman Gill has displayed greatness with the bat and shown glimpses of his potential as a young captain, but said his real test begins now with India trailing 1-2 in the five-match Test series against England. India lost the third Test against England at Lord's by 22 runs to go 1-2 down in the series. The two teams will face off in the fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Manchester starting July 23. "As India prepare for the final two Tests of their series in England, the spotlight now shines firmly on their 25-year-old captain Shubman Gill. A bright young talent, he has shown greatness with the bat and glimpses of leadership potential, but this moment will define his trajectory as a Test captain. "It's not an easy environment in which to grow, but it's the one he's in - and the stakes couldn't be higher," Chappell wrote in his column in ESPNcricinfo.com. Chappell wants Gill to set the tone for the side with his ...

Tim Southee takes dig at Gill's massage after altercation with Crawley

It was a dramatic end to day three of the third Test with opener Zak Crawley using the delaying tactic to ensure England only played one over before stumps but the Indians, let by captain Shubman Gill, were hardly amused. Speaking after close of play, England bowling consultant Tim Southee and India opener K L Rahul said the heated exchange between the Indian fielders and the home team openers formed the essence of a hard fought day in Test cricket. Speedster Jasprit Bumrah clapped in sarcasm as Crawley seemingly faked pain in his hand after defending the ball from the middle of the bat. It's good. always exciting to see both sides animated towards the end. Not sure what they were complaining about when Gill was lying down getting a massage in the middle of the day yesterday. it's obviously part of the game. near the end of the day, it's an exciting way to finish the day. Asked about Crawley in jest, South gave a tongue-in-cheek reply. Yeah, he (Crawley) will be assessed overnight

Michael Vaughan defends Crawley's delay tactics, says India can't object

Former England captain Michael Vaughan feels Zak Crawley's time-wasting tactics at the end of the third day of the ongoing third Test was "as good a piece" he has ever seen but said India can't complain as the visitors employed the same approach on second day. Tempers flared up at the end of the third day when India failed to squeeze in another over after England opener Zak Crawley's time-wasting tactics, drawing furious reaction from the visitors led by skipper Shubman Gill. After being bowled out for 387, India had enough time to bowl two overs in the final session on Day 3, but Crawley's tactics of feigning an injury and pulling out on three occasions during Jasprit Bumrah's opening over delayed the proceedings. It meant India had time for just one over, which angered the visitors as England ended day three at 2 for no loss in their second innings. "It's as good a piece of time-wasting I've ever seen," Vaughan was quoted as saying by BBC's Test Match Special podcast. "India can

Pant slams Dukes balls ahead of Lords Test, says are losing shape quickly

India vice-captain Rishabh Pant on Wednesday slammed the quality of the Dukes ball being used in the ongoing Test series against England, saying he has never seen the red cherry go out of shape to this extent. Players approaching umpires to change balls has been a regular feature in the series with Dukes losing shape. The bowlers are not getting any help from the ball after it gets softer, confining the batter-bowler contest to the new ball. Ahead of the Lord's Test, starting Thursday, Pant said the ball has become a big problem and it is not good for the game. "The gauge (to measure the balls) should be the same (whether its Dukes or Kookaburra. But it would be better if it was smaller (laughs). The balls are giving so much trouble. Definitely, I feel it's a big problem. Because the ball is getting out of shape," said Pant. "What I've seen, the ball is getting de shaped too much. That has never happened like this to me. It's definitely irritating for the players because every bal

Shubman Gill has what it takes to match 'Fab Four': Mark Ramprakash

Former England player Mark Ramprakash has hailed Shubman Gill for his stamina, skill and hunger, saying the young India batter and captain has shown he is capable of filling the boots of the 'Fab Four' of world cricket whose era is nearing an end. Gill scored 269 and 161 in the two innings of the Birmingham Test, adding to his 147 and 8 in the series opener at Leeds. He has totalled 585 runs in two Tests of the five-match series. "We have to pay testament to his stamina, his skill and his hunger not just for runs, but to set an example as the new captain of a young team," Ramprakash wrote 'The Guardian'. "We are coming to the end of a period that has been dominated by the so-called Fab Four Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson and the search has been on for players who can take over. "Gill has shown he can fill those boots and in a wonderfully orthodox style: he plays all formats and is brilliantly adaptable, but with a foundation of classic technique." The ..

Gill in honeymoon phase as captain; India's talent pool endless: Ganguly

Shubman Gill is enjoying a "honeymoon period" as India's Test captain but there will be more pressure on him in the days to come, feels former India skipper Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly, who turned 53 on Tuesday, recalled his recent interview with PTI while stressing that Indian cricket will never be devoid of talented players. With 585 runs, Gill is now just 18 short of surpassing Rahul Dravid's tally of 602 (in 2002) for the most runs by an Indian batter in a series in England. India bounced back in splendid fashion to win the Edgbaston Test by a dominant 336 runs and level the five-match series 1-1. "This is the best I've seen him bat and I'm not surprised, Ganguly said while talking to reporters at Eden Gardens on the sidelines of his birthday celebration. "I've recently said in an interview to PTI CEO that there will always be players in Indian cricket after every generation. Whenever there's a void, players will come and fill it. "There is so much talent in Indian cricket. In eve

Shubman Gill is a carbon copy of Virat Kohli: Ex-ENG player Jonathan Trott

Former England batter Jonathan Trott feels privileged to have watched current India captain Shubman Gill's double hundred and the second innings century in the Edgbaston Test which had shades of another genius Virat Kohli. Gill scored 269 and 161 in both Indian innings and now has the second highest individual aggregate of runs in a single Test (430) behind former England skipper Graham Gooch. Today, he showed how complete a batter he is. It reminded me of the previous Indian number four almost a carbon copy of that genius. I don't think he could've dreamed of a better start to his first two Tests on this tour. Sure, he'd have liked to win at Headingley, but now he's hopefully set up a fantastic victory here tomorrow, Trott told JioHotstar. "I honestly feel privileged to be here and witness that innings. I can't recall him giving the English bowlers even a single chance. The way he shifted gears hitting sixes at will without slogging, just pure cricket shots, was something ...
