Judo Federation of India gets conditional recognition from Sports Ministry

The Sports Ministry has granted conditional recognition to the interim body of the Judo Federation of India (JFI), which was elected last month following a Delhi High Court order, warning that "irregularities" in compliance with judicial directions would lead to its suspension. The JFI was governed by a court-appointed administrator since 2022, but in a ruling in February this year, the Delhi HC asked the body to conduct an Annual General Meeting and align itself with the provisions of the National Sports Governance Act that came into effect earlier this year. As a result, the body elected an interim Executive Committee, which is led by veteran sports administrator Mukesh Kumar with Banee Brata Das as Secretary General and Shailesh Tilak as Treasurer. "...it has been decided to grant recognition to the Executive Committee of the Judo Federation of India (Interim body) with immediate effect," the ministry notification stated. "The above government recognition is subject to the outco

Sports ministry orders Hockey India probe into Lakra misconduct claims

The Sports Ministry directed Hockey India to investigate allegations of intimidation and harassment levelled by former India captain Asunta Lakra and to share the outcome of the findings with the ministry. Lakra had urged the sports ministry through an email to intervene urgently against what she described as the institutional protection of sexual harassment, intimidation and victimisation of women athletes in hockey. Accusing HI general secretary Bhola Nath Singh of intimidating her, Lakra alleged that individuals accused of misconduct were being protected while those raising concerns were subjected to intimidation and retaliation. "I am directed to forward the email dated 10.07.2026 received from Ms Asunta Lakra, former captain of the Indian Women's Hockey Team and a member of the Executive Board of Hockey India. She has requested the constitution of an independent enquiry into allegations of sexual harassment, institutional intimidation, and related issues concerning women ...

Neeraj intensifies training in Switzerland ahead of Commonwealth Games

Ahead of his second Commonwealth Games appearance, Indian javelin throw ace Neeraj Chopra is sweating it out at his training base in Switzerland and is likely to head directly to Glasgow for the multi-sporting event starting on July 23. Chopra had won a gold in the 2018 CWG in Gold Coast but missed the 2022 edition in Birmingham due to an injury. He will be competing for his second major event of the year in Glasgow after the fourth place finish in Doha Diamond League in June with a throw of 85.69m. The men's javelin throw qualifying round of the Glasgow CWG will be held on July 30, with the final slated for the next day. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) had left it to Chopra whether to compete at any event before the CWG and it is more or less certain that he will head directly to Glasgow from his current training base in Bienne (Biel). The two-time Olympic medallist Indian shared the glimpses of his training in Switzerland on his Instagram. He had also caught up with Swiss

Dhiraj, Kirti fall short of bronze as India claim two compound medals

India's recurve mixed pair of Dhiraj Bommadevara and Kirti Sharma squandered a promising 3-1 lead to miss out on the bronze medal, losing 3-5 to Italy at the Archery World Cup Stage 4, here on Sunday. For Dhiraj, the Antalya World Cup champion, it was a disappointing end to the campaign as he returned empty-handed from Madrid despite having won the recurve mixed team gold with Kumkum Mohod in the third stage last month. India also ended their campaign individual section with Kirti losing both her semifinal and bronze playoff as the recurve archers returned empty-handed, ending their overall campaign with two medals (one silver and one bronze). Both the medals had come in the compound section on Saturday with the women's team winning the silver, while Prithika Pradeep bagged bronze. Kirti was the lone Indian in fray in the women's recurve individual section and the 19-year-old, who made her World Cup debut at Antalya last month, needed just a win for her maiden medal in this ...

Sarvesh earns historic third place at 2026 Monaco Diamond League for India

National record holder Sarvesh Kushare scripted history by becoming the first Indian high jumper to finish on the podium at a Diamond League meet, claiming third place on his debut in Monaco and joining an exclusive four-member club of Indian achievers. The 31-year-old Kushare sailed over 2.26m to take the third spot in a star-studded field Friday night and grabbed a remarkable personal milestone. He was competing just two weeks after setting a national record of 2.31m while winning gold at the National Inter-State Championships in Bhubaneswar last month. He became only the fourth Indian to finish in top-three of a Diamond League event after javelin throw superstar Neeraj Chopra (13 times since 2022), long jumper Murali Sreeshankar (once in 2023) and former discus thrower Vikas Gowda (on two occasions in 2015). Kushare beat some big stars including three-time world champion and Tokyo Olympics gold winners Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar, who finished joint eighth with a 2.20m effort, an
