US-Italy November friendly booked into Belgian stadium

Four-time World Cup champion Italy will play the United States in a November 20 football friendly at Luminus Arena in Genk, Belgium, the US Soccer Federation announced. It will be the closing match for the Americans this year, a bittersweet campaign in which they could only watch from afar as rivals competed in the World Cup in Russia. The match and date had been announced but no venue had been firmly linked to the game until this week. The Americans will close the year playing six teams ranked in FIFA's top 25 as they begin studying talent at the start of a new World Cup cycle, a lineup that also includes Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and England whom the US squad will face at Wembley Stadium on November 15. US Soccer officials also home to name a new full-time coach by the end of October, so the European matches will likely provide an early major test for whoever is charged with returning the American squad to the World Cup level. The Italians own a record of 7-1 with three drawn ..

Loew defiant as Griezmann double sinks 'very good' Germany

A defiant Joachim Loew praised Germany's display in their 2-1 UEFA Nations League defeat by world champions France as he lamented "a totally unjust penalty" awarded to the hosts. Antoine Griezmann hit a pair of second-half goals, including the winner from the spot, as France recovered from falling behind to a Toni Kroos penalty to inflict a sixth defeat on Germany in their past 10 matches on Tuesday. The result eliminated Germany from Nations League title contention, and left them needing to beat the Netherlands in their final group match on November 19 if they are to avoid relegation from the top tier. However, Loew insisted he was "very pleased" with the performance as Germany were much improved compared to the team that lost 3-0 against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. "I'm disappointed with the result, although though I must say the defeat is different to Saturday's," said Loew. "Not because of the result but because of the performance. I'm very pleased with the performance. "I think

Koeman's Netherlands claim friendly draw in Belgium

The Netherlands continued their resurgence under Ronald Koeman as youngster Arnaut Groeneveld's first international goal secured a 1-1 friendly draw with Belgium in Brussels. Dries Mertens fired the World Cup semi-finalists into a sixth-minute lead, but Groeneveld marked his full debut for the Dutch by equalising before the half-hour mark on Tuesday. This was another strong performance for the Oranje after Saturday's stunning 3-0 Nations League victory over Germany, while Roberto Martinez's Belgium remain unbeaten at home since a loss to Spain in September 2016. "I think there is still a lot of work to do, but we've shown that we've made good progress lately and at the end of the match we tried to play more offensively to try to win," said Koeman. "We had the best chances and overall we can be very happy with the last 10 days." The hosts struck early through a fantastic goal from Mertens, as the Napoli winger pounced after some slack Dutch defending, curling the ball past goalkeeper .

Flores strikes for Peru to deny USA

Edison Flores scored an 86th-minute equalizer as Peru grabbed a 1-1 draw against a youthful United States side in an international friendly. Mexico-based winger Flores popped up at the far post to jab home a wicked low cross to delight a large contingent of Peru fans in an estimated crowd of 25,000 at East Hartford's Rentshler Field in Connecticut on Tuesday. Flores's late strike was a disappointing finish to a game that US coach Dave Sarachan's new-look side had come close to winning. Sarachan made nine changes from the US team thumped 4-2 by Colombia last week, recalling goalkeeper Brad Guzan for his 59th cap. Three USA players were handed debuts including 19-year-old winger Jonathan Amon, who plays for Danish side Nordsjaelland. Amon had a role in the home side's only goal, scored by 18-year-old striker Josh Sargent, winning the free-kick on the right flank which set up the opener. Germany-based Sargent swept in a deflected finish from Kellyn Acosta's dead ball in the 49th minute ..

Brazil's Miranda silences Argentina with last-gasp winner

Brazil snatched a dramatic 1-0 win over Argentina with an injury-time header from Miranda in their friendly match in front of a sell-out crowd in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The Inter Milan centre-back was left all alone to thump in a 93rd-minute effort from Neymar's corner when the match between the fierce South American rivals seemed destined for a stalemate on Tuesday. The lapse spoiled an otherwise strong defensive performance from Argentina, who contained Brazil for long periods. He may be 34, but Miranda, whose career has also seen him play in France and Spain, says he is far from done in the yellow shirt of Brazil. "Despite my age I've been able to show that I'm in good physical shape and, of course, I want to keep playing for the national team because I still have a lot to show in this jersey," he said. With Neymar to the fore, Brazil exerted late pressure and could have scored in the few minutes before Miranda struck. Casemiro came close with a 25-yard free-kick manufactured by ...

BCCI's stand on Indo-Pak series is hypocritical: Ehsan Mani

PCB chairman Ehsan Mani on Tuesday said it was "hypocrisy" on part of BCCI that it lets India play Pakistan at ICC tournaments but ignores bilateral series. The BCCI has time and again said that it needs government clearance to play bilateral series. A frustrated PCB has filed a compensation case of Rs 447 crore with the Disputes Resolution Forum of ICC for not honouring an MoU which required the two countries to play six bilateral series from 2015-2023 The hearing in the case concluded earlier this month. "There is a lot of hypocrisy at the moment. India plays an ICC event against us but doesn't play a bilateral series. That is something that we need to address," Mani told ESPN Cricinfo. Mani stressed the resumption of bilateral cricketing ties is necessary as fans from both sides are eager to watch the two countries compete against each other. "The main thing is that we play cricket against each other. When we play cricket, especially in our countries - when we go to India or when ..

MCA members approach HC against shifting of Ind-WI ODI to Brabourne Stadium

Two members of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Tuesday approached the Bombay High Court challenging the BCCI's decision to shift the October 29 India-West Indies one day international match to Brabourne Stadium. The BCCI last Friday shifted the match from the Wankhede Stadium here to the Brabourne Stadium (owned by the Cricket Club of India), after the MCA cited financial constraints in hosting the tie. Sanjay Naik and Ravi Savant filed the petition challenging the cricket board's decision, saying it was illegal and arbitrary and passed without giving notice to the MCA. The petition is likely to be heard by a division bench headed by Justice B R Gavai Wednesday. The petition claimed that CCI was not equipped to hold an international match as it usually hosts only practice games. The CCI last hosted an ODI in 2006 and a Test match in 2009 when India took on Sri Lanka.
