Jeevan aims to jump 20 places in rankings by year end to play more Slams

Missing out on Davis Cup despite impressive results this season may have caused some heartache to Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan but he has now trained his eyes on playing consistently at the Grand Slams by taking his ranking to top-60 by the year-end. This year Jeevan has enjoyed one of the most successful seasons of his career. Last week at the Chengdu Open he reached only the second ATP250 level final with American partner Austin Krajicek. Before that he made seven finals on the Challenger circuit, winning three titles -- Winnetka, Ilkley, Dallas. He ended runner-up at Nottingham, Savannah, Tallahassee, Lille. Despite these results and being placed higher than his compatriot, he was not selected in the Davis Cup team for the Serbia tie, which India lost 0-4. Captain Mahesh Bhupathi had chosen N Sriram Balaji, ranked outside 100, while Jeevan was 88th at the time, saying the former had the ability to play both singles and doubles. Jeevan left behind the snub and went to reach Chengdu Open ...

Manipur clinch Women's National Football Championship crown

Manipur claimed victory in the final of the 24th Senior Women's National Football Championships, defeating hosts Odisha in the summit clash by a 2-1 margin here. The result marked the 19th occasion that the state from the northeast of India won the trophy, having lost out in the final to Tamil Nadu last time around. Both sides came into the final off the backs of two hard-fought matches in the semifinals. Manipur had got the better of the Railways team 4-3 in a penalty shootout as the match ended goalless after extra time. On the other hand, Odisha defeated defending champions Tamil Nadu in a thrilling match that ended 4-3, with the hosts finding the winner in extra time. The final, held at the Barabati Stadium, was a nail-biting affair. After a tense start, it appeared as if the first half would end goalless but it was Manipur who took the lead thanks to captain Bala Devi, who found the net in the 45th minute. Soon after the break, Irom Prameshwori Devi doubled her team's lead with a

Messi back at Wembley looking to make up for lost time in Europe

As Lionel Messi lay on the Wembley grass, his left hand grasping the Champions League trophy and his right pumping the air, he must have thought there would be many more European glory nights to come. It was 2011 and Barca had beaten Manchester United 3-1. "No one has given us a hiding like that," Alex Ferguson said. They were so much better than the rest that many predicted a decade of European dominance after that mesmerising display. "We have a challenge with Barcelona, we all do," Ferguson said. Messi had scored his side's second. Barcelona bounced in front of the photographers, the club's name carved into the trophy for a fourth time. For the 23-year-old Messi at the front, it was a third Champions League triumph in six years. But there has been only one in the seven seasons since, when Luis Enrique led his 2015 Barca to a brilliant treble. To make matters worse, arch-rivals Real Madrid have been crowned European champions four times and three times in a row since 2016. "They ...

Reborn Sturridge an extra weapon in Liverpool's armoury

It was a sight that just a few months ago would have been unthinkable -- Liverpool a goal down in a big game, and Mohamed Salah hauled off by Jurgen Klopp. Klopp got the goal he craved for a 1-1 draw at Chelsea on Saturday that preserved Liverpool's unbeaten Premier League start, not via Salah's immediate replacement Xherdan Shaqiri, but another late substitute, Daniel Sturridge. A reborn Sturridge is now Liverpool's joint top scorer so far this season with four goals despite remaining behind Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane in Klopp's pecking order. That he has remained there to be counted on at all, though, is a huge boost to Klopp's quest to both go one step further in the Champions League this season and deliver a first-ever Premier League title, 29 years after they last won the English top flight. "Thank God he is here," said Klopp after Sturridge's sensational dipping effort from outside the box secured a point at Stamford Bridge. "It would be really unlucky for both sides .

With shades of Neymar, English teen Sancho becomes 'weapon' for Dortmund

Jadon Sancho hopes his reputation for being a "weapon" off the bench for Borussia Dortmund will win the England Under-19 international a starting berth against Monaco in the Champions League on Wednesday. The 18-year-old wants a place in Lucien Favre's line-up after once more proving his worth on Saturday, when he helped seal a 4-2 comeback Bundesliga win at Bayer Leverkusen with two devastating assists. He set up Marco Reus for the equaliser at the BayArena a minute after coming on, and he then sent Paco Alcacer away on a counter-attack for the second of the Spaniard's two late goals as Dortmund went top of the table. He has appeared as a substitute in each of Dortmund's six Bundesliga outings this season, but he did start in their opening Champions League game, when they won 1-0 at Club Brugge to get off to the perfect start in Group A. Sancho now craves a regular starting berth after providing six assists as well as one goal in the Bundesliga, although he admits he is at his best ..

Suspension will allow Ronaldo to recharge - Allegri

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said Cristiano Ronaldo's one-match Champions League suspension was a welcome break for the Portuguese star to recharge after playing all matches since his move to Turin. Ronaldo will sit out Tuesday's European game in Turin against Swiss club Young Boys after his controversial sending off after half an hour in Valencia. Juventus went on to win the match 2-0. "Ronaldo has played every game so far and Saturday was his best ever since he was at Juve," said Allegri of the 3-1 league win over Napoli in which Ronaldo set up all three goals for the champions. "A little rest will do him good. "I'm curious to see the team without Ronaldo, although I already saw that in Valencia. "It's good that he will be with us in Manchester but it's important that he rests as well as he's already played a lot of games for us." Juve play Jose Mourinho's United at Old Trafford on October 23 before hosting the English club in Turin on November 7 in Group H. Ronaldo, a ...

Chess Olympiad: Indian men beat Egypt; Women hold Georgia

World Rapid Champion Viswanathan Anand was held to a draw by Egyptian Grandmaster Amin B as India just managed to secure a 2.5-1.5 win against lowly Egypt in the 7th round of the 43rd chess olympiad on Monday. In the women section being held alongside, Indian women played out a hard-fought draw against experienced Georgia 1 team. All the games were drawn. For the Indian men, it was a chance to register a big victory against the lower-rated egyptian team in their quest for a position at the podium but the sailing was not so smooth as GM Vidit Santosh Gujrathi (rated 2711) lost playing white against his much lower-rated opponent International Master Fawzy A in a queen pawn game. Swift victories by P Harikrishna against GM Adly A and ever-reliable GM K Sasikairan against Hesham A took India to a 2.5-1.5 victory. The women section was much closely fought with all games ending in draws with none of the players achieving a breakthrough. On the top board, India's highest-rated women player ..

ISL: NEUFC, FC Goa share spoils in exciting draw

NorthEast United FC and FC Goa played out an entertaining 2-2 draw in an Indian Super League (ISL) clash at the Indira Gandhi Athletic stadium here on Monday. Ferran Corominas (14th, 38th) bagged both goals for the visitors while Federico Gallego (8th) and Bartholomew Ogbeche (53rd) were the scorers for the hosts. After a stop-start first few minutes, the hosts were gifted a goal after a terrible error from 18-year-old Mohammad Nawaz, who was handed an ISL debut. The Goa custodian charged out of his box and handled the ball in the belief that Bartholomew Ogbeche was offside. However, no such whistle was blown by the referee who instead awarded the free-kick to NorthEast United for a handball. With Nawaz yards outside the box, Federico Gallego showed some quick thinking to chip the dead ball into the empty net, much to the horror of Nawaz. Having profited from Nawaz's error to take the lead, the hosts relinquished it minutes later after an error by their own goalkeeper, TP ...

SAI to hold coaching camp ahead of Artistic gymnastics World C'ship

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has decided to hold a 16-day senior national gymnastics coaching camp for men and women here from October 3 ahead of the 48th Artistic World Championship. SAI had conducted a trial for the October 25-November 3 Doha event on Saturday, which was skipped by top gymnasts Rakesh Patra and Dipa Karmakar. While Patra boycotted the trial after being frustrated by the "absurdity" of the selection criteria, Dipa missed it due to fitness issues. Interestingly, SAI had initially said that the Indian team for World Championship will consist of 2 men and 2 women gymnasts and gave the dictat to select the team on all-around basis instead of judging the athletes on the performance of individual events, which left many gymnasts stumped. However, Dr Rajinder Pathania, Project Officer (Teams) in his letter Monday included three men and three women in the list of campers for the coaching camp at IG stadium. The women's team comprises Pranati Das, B Aruna Reddy and ...

US Open title 'not the happiest memory', says Osaka

Naomi Osaka made the startling admission on Monday that winning the US Open was "bittersweet" and "not the happiest memory" and revealed that she has been trying to forget about the career-defining victory. The 20-year-old rising star from Japan stunned Serena Williams last month in a tempestuous final in which the American called chair umpire Carlos Ramos "a thief" and later accused him of sexism. "There's a lot of stuff I want to say about how I felt and whatever," the world number six said. Williams's high-profile meltdown made headlines over Osaka's feat in becoming the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam, although Osaka has declined to point the finger at the American great. "For me, I don't know, I don't know, the memory of the US Open is a little bit bittersweet," Osaka said. "Right after, the day after, I really didn't want to think about it because it wasn't necessarily the happiest memory for me. "I just sort of wanted to move on at that point." Speaking in Beijing, where ...

Marsh hundred gives Australia big lead in warm-up game

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh celebrated his elevation to joint Australia vice captain with a punishing hundred on Monday as the touring batsmen warmed up for the Pakistan Test series. The 26-year-old scored 162 with 17 boundaries against Pakistan A in Dubai. Australia closed at 494-4 after a batting workout. The older Marsh brother, Shaun, missed his century by six runs while Travis Head was 90 not out. That gave the visitors a 216-run lead. Pakistan 'A' made 278 all out in their first innings in the four-day match at ICC Academy ground. Mitchell, made vice captain alongside Josh Hazlewood on Thursday, added 207 with brother Shaun, whose 230-ball knock had 13 boundaries. Mitchell then added 106 with Head for the fourth wicket. Head had hit ten boundaries as Pakistan's Test pacers Wahab Riaz and Rahat Ali failed to get a wicket. Another left-arm pacer Waqas Maqsood finished with 2-66 while part-time spinner Iftikhar Ahmed had 2-149. Head then shared an unbroken stand of 87 with Marnus ...

Re-energised Djokovic targets number one spot

Novak Djokovic is back home in Belgrade preparing for an offensive to regain the world number one spot after roaring back into top form by winning the US Open. "I planned to be here with my family ... and everything is set so that I'm again in the race for number one," Djokovic told reporters in a tennis centre owned by his family in the Serbian capital. "I hope that Belgrade will bring me luck." Djokovic has been using the modern facilities to gather his strength for a rousing finale to a season in which he has risen from the ashes after a difficult 2017. His next stop is the Shanghai Masters from next Monday. "I decided with my team to stay a bit longer in Belgrade to recover and make a solid base for Shanghai," the 31-year-old Serb added. Since Wimbledon, Djokovic, who was absent for six months from competition in 2017 and underwent elbow surgery in February, has lost just one match, a surprise defeat in Toronto by Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Before winning his 14th Grand Slam in New

Pakistan team fails to turn up for Asian Pencak Silat event due to visa issues

A team from Pakistan could not take part in the 4th Asian Pencak Silat Championship, currently underway here, due to visa issues, officials said on Monday. The Pakistani team was expected to take part in the Championship, which was inaugurated at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Stadium, as the organisers had put up the flag of the neighbouring country, alongside other participating nations. "We were expecting the Pakistan team and had even made all out efforts to arrange for their visa at Indian High Commission in Islamabad. The High Commission staff was very cooperative and promised that visa will be issued despite very short notice," Mohammad Iqbal, an official of the Indian Pencak Silat Federation, told PTI on Monday. Pakistan Pencak Silat Federation President Rana Abdul Majeed, however, claimed that his team faced hassles in getting visa from the Indian High Commission in Islamabad. Majeed said while Iqbal's efforts had helped in expediting the access to Indian High Commission, the ...
