Megh Patel, Sharanya Gaware win titles in national jr tennis

Megh Bhargav Patel of Gujarat justified his top billing, winning the boys singles title in the Adidas-MCC National Junior Clay Court tennis championship here today. Sharanya Gaware of Maharashtra, the 14th-seed, capped a fine run by winning the girls title at the expense of third-seed Humera Sheikh of Telangana. The top-seeded Patel made the boys final a no-contest as he brushed aside the challenge of fourth-seeded Delhi lad Rhythm Malhotra 6-3, 6-0 in an hour to become the champion. Patel, who had a tough time in his quarterfinal was in roaring form in the final. Both players held serve till 3-all in the first before the Gujarat lad made it a one-way contest. He served with precision and had eight aces in all and returned with precision to reel off nine games from three-all in the opening set. The girls final was a topsy-turvy match. Sharanya was steady while Humera though powerful was often erratic. The girls traded two breaks and held twice till 4-all inthe first set. .

Two Koreas march together at Asian Games opening ceremony

North and South Korea marched together behind the Korean Unification flag at the Asian Games opening ceremony on Saturday, in the latest demonstration of their rapprochement. South Korean women's basketball player Lim Yung-hui and North Korean footballer Ju Kyong-chol carried the blue and white flag as the Korean athletes paraded into Jakarta's Gelora Bung Karno stadium. It is the second such symbolic gesture this year by the two Koreas, who also walked together at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics opening ceremony -- an event that heralded an unprecedented warming of ties. The North and South, still technically at war, are also joining forces in women's basketball, canoeing and rowing during the 40-sport, two-week regional Olympics. PM conveys best wishes to Indian contingent for Asian Games

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has offered his best wishes to the Indian contingent for the 18th Asian Games, which started today in Jakarta, Indonesia. "Best wishes to the Indian contingent for the @asiangames2018, which are being held in Indonesia. We are extremely proud of our athletes and I am sure they will give their best through the games," he tweeted. The Asian Games will take place simultaneously in Indonesia's capital Jakarta, and Palembang, capital of the province of South Sumatra. The opening ceremony began in Jakarta at 5:30 pm Indian time. In all, close to 11,000 athletes from 45 countries will be in action at the Games, which will conclude on September 2 The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, will be a reality check for India's athletes after the Commonwealth Games high. India had equalled their best performance in terms of medals won in the 2014 Asiad with a total of 57, including 11 gold, and the contingent of 572 athletes this time would be hoping to better that.

Manav Thakkar corners two bronze at Asian Junior Championships

India's junior paddlers, led by World No 5 Manav Thakkar, continued their stellar show, bagging three medals in the individual events at the Asian Junior and Cadet Championships in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar. India had earlier created history by entering the finals of the team championship for the first time. Today, they scripted their names on the medals too, winning three bronze medals in the doubles competitions. In the boy's doubles, the duo of Manav and Manush Shah beat the Singaporean pair of Chua Sao Han Josh and Yu Zong Jun Gerald 3-2 in the Round of 16 before steamrolling the Iranian combination of Amin Ahmadian and Amirreza Abbasi Monjezi 3-0 to advance to the last four. MCA to hold condolence meet for Wadekar

The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) will organise a condolence meeting in memory of former India skipper Ajit Wadekar. Wadekar (77) died at a South Mumbai hospital on August 15 after a prolonged illness. He was cremated yesterday with full state honours at the Shivaji Park crematorium in Dadar in central Mumbai. "A condolence meeting of the members of the affiliated clubs, cricketers and umpires under the auspices of Mumbai Cricket Association to condole the death of our beloved late Shri Ajit Wadekar, former India and Mumbai captain will be held on Wednesday, August 22 at 5 PM at MCA Lounge - Wankhede Stadium," MCA Joint Secretary Prof Dr Unmesh Khanvilkar said in a media statement issued this evening. A left handed batsman par excellence, Wadekar led India to their first series win in West Indies and England in 1971. He also captained Mumbai.

India struggle after good start from openers

Indian openers showed signs of improvement before Chris Woakes' triple strike left the visitors struggling at 82 for three against England at lunch on the opening day of the third Test. Put into bat, comeback man Shikhar Dhawan punched his way to 35 adding 60 for the opening stand before Woakes coming in as second change bowler blew away the top three to put the pressure right back on India. From 60 for no loss, India lost three wickets for 22 runs to end the session at 82 for 3. Dhawan was once again gone trying to poke at an away going delivery while KL Rahul (23) was trapped leg before by an incutter. The most disappointing was Cheteshwar Pujara (14, 31 balls), who again did the hardwork before Woakes successfully led the short ball trap enticing him for a hook shot. Pujara went for it and was holed out at the long leg boundary at the stroke of lunch as the irritation on coach Ravi Shastri's face was clearly visible. Pole sitter Raghul Rangasamy secured a commanding victory to head the leaderboard in the MRF F1600 class in the fourth round of the MRF MMSC FMSCI Indian National Racing Championship at the MMRT track at Sriperumbudur near here today. Apart from the 25-year-old Rangasamy, Coimbatores Arjun Balu (Race Concepts) also stole the spotlight winning a thrilling race in the high-end Indian Touring Cars class. His team-mate Varun Anekar from Bengaluru, who started ninth and from the pit-lane, finished first in the Super Stock category. The Formula LGB 1300 double-header produced two different winners in Chennai's Ashwin Datta (Momentum Motorsports) and Sohil Shah (M Sport) from Bengaluru. India U-16 football team to play Turkey, Oman in Istanbul cup

Ramping up its preparations for the 2018 AFC U-16 Championships the Indian junior team will participate in the tri-nation Istanbul Cup in Turkey. The colts, who finished runner-up in the five-nation WAFF U-16 Championship, will play Turkey and Oman in the tournament followed by a friendly match against the junior side of Turkish club Besiktas before returning to India. From January, the team has so far played 19 international matches against U-16 teams including USA, Norway, Japan, Serbia, Iraq, DPR Korea, China (U-17), Thailand, Jordan amongst others. "With us playing Oman in Turkey, the boys would now have played 9 of the qualified 16 teams (including India) for the AFC U-16 Championship. The quality of matches we played during the exposure tours will help the coach and the players in the long run as these are the countries which we will be playing often at the Asian level," National Team Director, Abhishek Yadav, said.
