It was tough decision to make myself available for Tests: Rashid

Having decided to quit red-ball cricket for good, leg-spinner Adil Rashid admitted that it was a "tough decision" to make himself available for England in Tests in what can be termed as a "surprise" recall to the 13-man squad for the five-Test series against India, starting August 1. The 30-year-old, who last played a Test match in December 2016 against India (at Chennai), was dramatically recalled following his recent exploits in ODIs where he got 20 wickets against Australia and India at an average of 23.95. "It was definitely a tough decision and obviously I was kind of surprised because to get back in the Test side usually people have to go back to your county and perform to be considered," he told Sky Sports News. "After the ODIs there was a discussion that me and Ed (selector Ed Smith) had, just regarding - you know - how you feel about playing, or being part of the squad, this summer against India. "So obviously I had to think about it, considering I hadn't played red-ball ...

By the time the next World Cup comes, I will be 40," Steyn said at a promotional event, here today. Steyn is hopeful that his huge experience would help him earn a place in that UK bound World Cup squad. "If you look at the (SA) batting line-up, our top six have played 1,000 games, but lower half - from eight to eleven who are currently playing - not even 150 games. You need to draw on experience. "I hope that will be my trump card when the selection comes to the World Cup. I may not necessarily play all the time. But I think my experience will help with me just being there," he said. However Steyn said that he would love to continue playing Test cricket even after

India U-16 team beat Malaysia U-16 2-1 in 2nd International friendly

The Indian U-16 team ended its exposure tour on a winning note as they notched up a thrilling 2-1 win over Malaysia U-16 in the second International friendly in Kuala Lumpur today. After two first-half goals from Rohit Danu (21st minute) and Givson Singh (31st minute) had provided India an early edge, Malaysia managed to pull one back in added time of the second half. After suffering a loss three days back, India started on an aggressive note. Danu tried to latch on an attack from the middle but the Malaysia defenders dealt with it. The battle was mostly being fought at the middle of the pitch before Danu was brought down by the Malaysian defender. The referee didn't hesitate to award a penalty kick in favour of the visitors, which Danu himself converted. Ten minutes later, Givson hit the target once again following a meticulous build-up from the midfield. A solo run by Rohit from the left of the box opened up the rival defence. He then passed it to the midfielder who tapped it home ..

Adil Rashid recalled to England Test squad, rookie seamer Porter also in

In-form leg-spinner Adil Rashid was today recalled to the 13-man England squad for the opening Test against India despite his stated intent of concentrating on white ball cricket this February. Essex seamer Jamie Porter also earned his maiden call-up for his consistent performances for the county and England Lions (A) over the past few seasons. He played a key role in Essex's County triumph in 2017 and was awarded with the 'Player of the Year' trophy. However Rashid's much publicised return, having last played a Test match in December 2016 against India (at Chennai), happened due to his recent exploits in ODIs where he got 20 wickets against Australia and India at an average of 23.95. If selected, Rashid, who signed a white-ball only deal with Yorkshire in February, will play his first Test in England having earned his previous 10 away from home. "Clearly, the one-off circumstances around Adil's return to the Test squad are unusual. However, the selection panel was unanimous in ...

I will put my money on England against India, says Steyn

South African pace great Dale Steyn today said the Virat Kohli-led India is "capable of anything" but still backed England to prevail in the upcoming Test series owing to the home team's more "skilled" bowling attack. "I don't like any predictions. The advantage probably lies with England, obviously being at home and with such a long tour. It tends to become very long. They have been there for ODIs and are a very good touring team now. (But) if I put my money, I will probably put it on England," Steyn said. The five-match series starts with the first Test in Birmingham from August 1. "Led by Virat this Indian team is capable of anything. I know Virat pretty well; he's quite a determined character. Five Test matches are going to be good for one team and if one team gets on a roll the other team will be blown away. "(But) it's going to be a hard-fought Test series. The England bowlers are a little bit more skilled and that's where the difference will be, that will be the tipping point,"

Olympic boss Moriyasu appointed as Japan national football coach

Japan named Olympic coach Hajime Moriyasu as their new national football boss today. The 49-year-old replaces Akira Nishino, who led the Blue Samurai to the last 16 of the World Cup in Russia in his two-month spell as caretaker coach. Former Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann had been linked to the job, along with ex-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, but the Japan Football Association (JFA) went for a trusted insider. Moriyasu, who will also maintain his current assignment as the coach for Japan's under-21 team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, pledged to bring new blood to the top national side. "There will be generational changes. There will be integration of various generations of players," he told a press conference. Moriyasu was drafted in as an assistant to Nishino ahead of the World Cup after JFA chief Kozo Tashima abruptly fired Franco-Bosnian coach Vahid Halilhodzic in April following a poor run of form. Japan went on to reach the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since 2010. .

Goa lacks finances as of now to build sports infra: Minister

The Goa government today said it lacked finances to build sports infrastructure for now, as it is focussing on erecting stadia for the National Games 2019. "We don't have finances to take up new projects. We are already investing in the National Games. You will have to wait. We will be able to invest only after year 2019," Sports Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar said in the Legislative Assembly. He was responding to a question tabled by Maharashtravadi Gomantak Party (MGP) MLA Dipak Pawaskar. The MLA demanded construction of a stadium in North Goa's Dharbandora taluka by acquiring land from the state-run Sanjivani Sugar Factory. The minister ruled out the possibility of acquiring the land and building the stadium in the taluka. "If Pawaskar, who is the chairman of state-run Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC), can acquire the land on behalf of the corporation, then the sports department can construct the indoor stadium," said the minister. Goa would host ...
